[EDH] Top 5 Generals of all time

  • #1
Just to spark some friggin conversation, I figured EDH is one of the more popular formats so I am going to do a few top 5's of generals. The first in this series will be most fun...i had a blast building A Hakim, Loreweaver, Shauku, Endbringer and Jhoira of the ghitu decks, so those are my votes. What do others think? what general is the most fun to play/play against?

TOP 5 Most Fun EDH generals:
(so far in no particular order)
    [card]
    Jhoira of the Ghitu[/card]
    [card] Scion of the Ur-Dragon
    [/card]
    Zur the enchanter

i'm having a blast with my Teysa, Orzhov Scion deck. Actually, she is my only one still. Tweaking as we go, she turns out to be pretty powerfull, shamelessly powering out a Storm Herd on turn 5 if the stars align.

Theorectically (I follow the format but have yet to actually play a game), I would say the Momir Vig, Simic Visionary and Teneb, the Harvester look like amazing generals. They are both in great color combinations and have some card advantage built into them. Sliver Overlord is probably brutal and Jhoira of the Ghitu looks very interesting.

The general I'm dying to use is Angus MacKenzie. Fog you!

For pure powerfulness, Zur, Maga, and Mormir Vig are probably some of the strongest.

For pure fun, something like Iname, Death Aspect (search for 20+ spirits, Mortal Combat?), Norin the Wary (Abuse him with stuff like Genesis Chamber and token generation to blink him in and out, etc for nonstop fun), and my current one, Dosan, the Falling Leaf to stop shenanigans and then comboing out. That's right, mono green combo decks win!

I think that Scion of the Ur-Dragon could be a pretty brutal commander. I haven't played the format, but he looks brutal from the surface. Also lets you play many nifty dragons with fun abilities.

Zur the Enchanter or Ertai, the Corrupted are probably better though (and they have neat synergy).
people assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff

    Rofellos.

    Nuff said.
  • #8
Rofellos has the be the LEAST fun general.

He was so good that he got banned.

So yeah, Rofellos can't make any list, since he can't be a general by the official rules.

I play Doran in my EDH right now. I originally wanted to play Teneb, but a guy in the Seattle area had already built a Teneb deck. I was told I could play Teneb too, and switch Doran in for him if I ever played that guy. Rather than do that, I just decided to build around Doran. Doran makes for a lot of fun interactions and you can have a good defense to your deck, making you a bad target for multiplayer attacks... but not a huge threat until Doran actually hits. I don't think I could put Doran as a top general though.

Based on the experiences, I would say these 5 are very strong:

Zur the Enchanter - his search is great. Lets you dig out some really strong plays from your 100 card pile. The colors he is in are very controlling too. His toolbox effect just makes the deck run so smooth.

Jhoira of the Ghitu - she can let you play ridiculous cards. This one guy had Timesifter in his Jhoira EDH and a ton of like 8cc instants and creatures. With just 6 people in our EDH pod, it took about 15 turns for me to see another turn. It was great when that card finally got destroyed. Plus Jhoira lets you play cards like Obliterate... especially good when other beefy things are suspended after it.

Arcum Dagsson - This guy's search function is amazing. I played a guy with Arcum as his General and he was basically able to control the board until all of his permanents where Indestructible, then he was able to create near infinite amounts of Artifact creatures and toss them all to a Blasting Station to kill 4 opponents at once. Nobody wanted to play that deck against him after that.

Horde of Notions - You might think this guy is bad, but he really isn't. His 5 Colors allow you to use whatever cards you want. My friend uses him as a General in a combo deck. It is totally abusive. The Notions comes down as a hasted attacker and blocker... at the same time. So you not only shave off a few extra life points to ensure the combo goes lethal, but you also save yourself quite a bit of damage from ground attackers too. Good card to build around.

Teneb, the Harvester - I just love this as far as actual Elder Dragons go. He's a well costed fatty and his graveyard recursion can ensure some awesome late game swings. I could very easily be using Teneb now as my main general and he was always my first choice... I've grown on Doran, but Teneb is still a house. I don't know what other of the Elder Dragons I would want before him.

Intet, the dreamer was the only PC dragon that impressed me...at least as being fun...although i wasnt impressed by any of the invasion dragons which is pretty abnormal from what i can tell

Erayo, Soratami Ascendant is a great card in a controllish build. Then you can also play arcane laboratory (a blue rule of law for whoever doesn't know) and then you have a potential lock.

Jhoira of the Ghitu for the reasons already stated.

Nah, Erayo's fine. Pretty strong, but legal.

As for my nominations: Both of the Green/Blue options (Experiment Kraj and Momir Vig) are very fun to build around and play with. I haven't played against them, but they seem to draw a positive response.

Five-color options are always sort of fun, and Horde of Notions seems like the most interesting of the lot. My Horde deck is a work in progress, but it's fun to build for and seems like it will be fun to play.

Karn is also fun, and extremely powerful. I also like the automatic restriction that he places on deckbuilding. TRUE Highlander FTW!

I actually don't like Jhoira very much. She's kind of like dousing your car in gasoline and lighting it on fire in terms of explosiveness, and she is pretty useless late. I'm pretty keen on Niv-Mizzet, though: He's strong, is always relevant, and plays into several parts of the game that I enjoy (drawing cards and killing creatures).

Niv-Mizzet should be the next general to be banned. I mean, Curiosity effects + Niv-Mizzet usually equals to an automatic death of 2 people. And since Niv is your general, it's not even a 2 card combo, it becomes a 1 card combo. Get Curiosity/Ophidian Eye, etc, etc and bam, 2 people dies.

Another "fun" general I've found is Balthor the Defiled. He can reanimate everything in your graveyard, multiple times. Great for longer multiplayer games, where you might run out of relevant cards in your library by the later turns. With him, you won't even care, since you can just get back your army even if they are all dead.

Niv actually was banned for a while, but that has since been undone. Personally, I feel that it is likely that most tables will remove Niv before Eye/Curiosity becomes an issue (I.E. in response to them playing it), but then, my group might just pack a lot of instant removal.

Anywho, Balthor seems pretty fun to build around. If you want to remind your group that they actually DO need to pack graveyard hate, Balthor seems like a great choice.

RU is no perticularly good at FINDING curiosity/ophidian eye in a deck is it...mystical teachings finds the eye, but it has B on it, i guess gamble too, but thats kind of 50/50, but 3/99 chance of finding piece 2 isnt that strong.
maybe its worse than it sounds...but it seems to be a reasonable if not very strong combo

All the transmute cards can find Curiosity or Ophidian eye, and with enough draw, you will be able to hit one or the other.

But it's just the idea behind it. You resolve it and 2 people dies. That's kinda....overpowered?

It very well might be, but the EDH powers that be seem to think that it hasn't reached a problematic level yet, so something must be going right. If it becomes a widespread problem, I'm sure that some sort of action will be taken.

I would like to cast my vote for Scion, the Ur Dragon.
I've been running him the last couple weeks with a ton or reanimate spells and all the regrowth-like cards. He's a beating.

I'm working on typing my list out. I'll post it to the forums when it's done.

In the MWS world, for many players, winning also makes you a noob.

    The same applies to:

    -Knowing the rules.
    -Netdecking.
    -Not netdecking.
-Using old versions of a card (yeah, it has hapenned to me: "Ugh... ugly pic noob")
    -Knowing English.
    -Using phases.
    -Countering spells.

<@MarkRosewater> THis is a secret we've carefully guarded but for this chat I'm going to spill the beans.
<@MarkRosewater> Some cards in Magic are better than others.
    <@MarkRosewater> Ssh, don't tell anyone.

Scion of the ur-dragon is one of the grossest ones I've seen. Sits off to the side whilst the deck does all the broken things that an expensive 5-color deck can do, then flies in to mess you up. Scion swings at you - then becomes either vorosh, the hunter for the +1/+1 counters and lethal general damage the next turn when he turns into dragon tyrant, or just nicol bolas, to ruin your day even quicker.

And those dragons dont sit in the 'yard.

    Sliver overlord is comparably stupid.

I've tried the arcum dagson deck, and while he's a lot of fun, any sensible group will end you the moment you start his shenanigans. He's too slow and too obvious to be really dangerous.

I'm seeing a lot of votes for Jhoira, but I think she suffers from the same problem. Giving people 4 turns to prepare for that obliterate or decree of annihilation is waaay too long, and nothing else is potent enough to be worth suspending instead of building the mana and hardcasting it.

Me, I play Gaddock Teeg, because I enjoy annoying people more than I do actually winning.

Nice trick there, I too have a Scion deck but did not see that one, I'll have to put Vorosh back in...

But when your general becomes a copy of Dragon Tyrant, is he still your general? i.e. would the damage count towards the 21 damage rule? I'm not so sure...

But back on topic, here are my nominations:

#1) Zur the Enchanter: The best in my opinion. Quick and cheap, immune to all terror-like spells, can take a bolt without flinching, has evasion, is a nearly unbeatable card-advantage engine and enables one of my favorite color combination, need I say more?

#2) Scion of the Ur-dragon: So fun to play!

#3) Sliver Overlord: Same reason, plus the synergy of slivers is undeniable. Just be sure to include the cycle of Patriarch's Bidding, Living Death, Twilight's Call, etc, so you don't fold to your first Wrath.

#4) Merieke Ri Berit: If I hadn't picked Zur, she would have been my choice, in the right deck she can be so dominating.

#5) Jhoira of the Ghitu: I've seen her do her stuff, I am a believer.
