Gobbos all day baby. They're one of the best supported and deadly tribes around, with many good generals to lead the horde, and nothing beats Goblin Wizard.
Being a man who likes tribal though, Wizards are incredibly strong, as are Elementals in 5-color.
I've just about completed my Kangee, Aerie Keeper deck too. They're aren't many good Birds though unfortunately. And why was Flurry of Wings a Bant-colored spell! Come on Wizards, let's see some Bird love!
Wizards and goblins are both great tribes. They also have a lot of synergy and use some very powerful cards.
Though I'm not partial to it, Azami wizard tribal is pretty popular. Wort, Boggart Auntie is recursion for goblins, making them even harder to kill than usual.
Really, it's edh, try any tribe you think will enjoy. Right now I'm trying to make rats work, for example.
Experiment. Perhaps try scarecrows? Reaper King doesn't get enough love...
I have a fun Mikaeus, the Unhallowed zombie tribal deck that is built to play zombies, then they die, then they come back continually to eat your brains. Actually it just won me a fourway 2nite at the LGS.
Can't believe no one's mentioned elves. Much, much easier to elfball in this format than it is to gobball (sp?), there are much more green draw spells than red. Ezuri has a wincon built-in, and there are plenty of other good elf generals. Although I love goblins, I'd have to say the speed, consistency and power of elves outclasses goblins.
Goblins, Elves, and Slivers could all be called the best tribe. Wizards and Zombies are solid and have some heavy-hitter generals to back them up. Horde of Notions Elementals.dec is a surprisingly strong outsider option.
- Goblins have the most staple land base even if you go Wort, Boggart Auntie. The other tribal types don't have access to black tutors, Blood Moon, Magus of the Moon, Dark Confidant, Boom/Bust, the best synergy in colours that don't contain blue or green and various other game winning land destruction spells.
- Damia Wizards are strong, but you mess up, you lose. Trust me, I've play against some pretty good wizard’s decks and 1 miss play is a game lost for them.
For example: A friend of mine tapped the wrong mana and they couldn't counter my land both destruction spells with an active Smokestack with 5 soot counters on it. That move lost him the game since he only had 10 permanents out after the land destruction spell.
By the way, blue is a lot harder to play than you think. It's not a face rolling contest, it actually takes skill against good players not terribad players which are your typical Craw Wurm aggro decks.
Its seems like wizards was looking at standard and said to themselves "OK whats the cheapest deck to play competitively . . . RDW's is like 100 dollars to build. OK well lets give them a awesome planeswalker so THEY'll have to spend alot of money to be competitive to!!! We don't want people dodging those mythics!!"
Azami, however, is Amazing and annoying, and aggravating, and might as well have the rules text "Opponents are not allowed to react, play spells, or just generally have fun"
Wizards is the tricksy tribe. You get card draw and counterspells, and frankly, Willbender deserves his own thread.
Elves play more like a combo deck than a true tribe, in my experience.
I have a Zombie deck which has an insane amount of synergy, but little beef.
For pure power and resilience, though, you should look to the Elementals.
Horde of Notions is an outright gift to EDH. Not just five colors, not just trample vigilance haste, but the pure recycling value of his ability is insane, not least because of the evoke abilities.
Bog/Crypt/Relic, or die.

I have 15 EDH decks...sorta kills the 'I only need one of a card' aspect of the format.
I went and started a Commander/EDH blog! Come see it at http://wordofcommander.blogspot.com/ and it includes all 15 of my custom super-art generals!
If you're more into the finance section of the game, I write on Fridays for MTGPrice.com.
Personally I have had a whole lot of fun and success with Clerics. A lot of life gain and damage prevention combined with enchantments with Vish Kal leading the team.
(What the hell did you RL MTG players do to Portal? Did you hate it so much that you had deck burning bonfires to get rid of the cards, thus increasing the rarity and prices? Did people mail back their fat packs to WotC in droves, demanding refunds?)
I've been playing a control-heavy Sphinx tribal deck lately with Sharuum as the commander. If it doesn't get targetted early, Sphinxs make some really mean armies - and even if it does, I've got plenty of mass removal until I'm ready to explode.
I gotta say that wizards comes just because of the access to blue, after that I would say comes elves, they combo well and generate insane amounts of mana which is usually amazing and green is a good card drawing color

I will be typing up deck lists as soon as I an be bothered, I really only play EDH:
-Wizards with Azami is probably most consistent.
-Elfball combos with Radha, Momir Vig, Nath, or Ezuri would probably be second. (Someone mentioned Seton, also good)
-Goblins with black Wort, or Kiki-Jiki I suppose, is decent. If only because of Goblin Recruiter.
Basically, the good tribes in EDH are the ones that are really just combo decks with a tribal base. The rest kind of suck.
I agree that Goblins are the most explosive, and while Zombies are seen by many people as "too casual to be competitive", I personally think they are still consistent enough, if not for the very least that they have access to some like 15+ lords.
And I'm not just saying that because I have a zombie tribal deck either. <_<
Wow. No love for fairies? Oona as a commander with access to U/B spells and fairy shenanigans. When I would sit down at our table it would turn out to be a game of 3 on 1. Huge fliers thanks to Door of Destinies was usually all it ever took to win. It also blows to be the guy playing mono colored Vs the deck. Slivers and wizards are really good too. I play a very fine tuned Goblin deck, but they usually get rolled to board wipes.

But, may as well open it up to all tribes. What tribe has worked well for you?

I draft and play EDH. If a Standard player can't understand who a card is for, it's probably for me.
I also write things about good films.

You don't even need to try to infinite combo, a thoughtfully constructed U/B Grimgrin deck will just pulls wins out the ass time and time again.
Bursty damage, resilient, and has access to countermagic and card draw with a strong creature base.
