I started mtg only a few years ago and edh only about 2 years ago. When I started edh it sounded like a tough ordeal, but I wanted to try it. I looked at my cards and decided to make a mono-white Akroma deck. Being inexperienced with edh, I didn't realzie at the time that white was the weakest color. I was also building my deck more like a 1v1 deck than a multiplayer deck as I intended it to be. I threw it angels and tappers in the deck. I figured out later that tapper aren't good in edh, especially multiplayer edh.
Now my deck has lots of flyers(mostly angels) and auras. I wanted to have a small aura theme with some silly cards like Celestial Mantle. I haven't played the deck in a while and every once in a while I take cards from it to put in my "better" decks. I might take the entire deck apart soon, but I won't forget what it was like when I first started edh. Every card was a potential candidate for your deck. Putting enough cards in wasn't a problem, it was putting in too many. Every once in a while I look back at where I started and how far I've progressed in edh and as a mtg player.
So what were your first edh decks?(If you can remember back that far).
I told my friends about commander. We had stopped playing casual constructed because or games would always turn into the fastest combo won. We also had no banned cards in our games. So 60 card decks that had 4 fast bonds 4 strip mines 4 crucible of the worlds and 4 zuran orbs were being played for example.
My first deck was balthor the defilied and it was a house because our group was inexperienced, no one had graveyard hate. Now i do the same thing with my balthor deck i take good cards out of it to fuel my better decks. I am going to make it a 1v1 to play in our 2HG games someday.
Captain Sisay, followed by a big mana Drana. Sisay got pulled apart because she always did the same thing. Drana eventually changed to Greven, because I wanted a more unusual general and Greven is pure nostalgia for me. The overriding theme of the deck has changed a couple times, but I've had him together for the entire time I've been playing EDH.

Oh, actually, I did buy Mirror Mastery, so I guess that was technically my first irl one, even though I disassembled it after playing only the one game at the launch event.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
A rather terrible Nicol Bolas deck. It had a small discard theme, a small dragon theme, and was otherwise an inexperienced, budget as hell "goodstuffs" deck. It ran too many single target effects, Hypnotic Specter-ish cards, and lacked more than one or two draw spells. It just kinda sat around twiddling its thumbs with the exception of the one game I drew all my mass discard effects, hit all my land drops, and beat everyone down with dragons. Though I still didn't win that game lol. It was a good lesson to learn lol.
my first deck? That's a tough question. Do you mean first finalized deck, or just the first deck I built up? Cause they could mean something very different.
Anyways, I've been only playing EDH like 2-3 years, and I'm young enough to remember a lot of things. My first concept of a deck was to use a lot of big dudes, high CMC spells, and that was the deck. I chose a lot of naya colors, so when I had like the 80-90 cards from my old unused cards shoebox, I kinda was looking for a Naya coloured legendary. I found a Uril, and used him. However, at that time the Phyrexia vs coalition duel decks came out, and I saw Rith. I knew that Rith is much more awesome, so I switched to Rith for a bit.
6 months down the road, I started to not like using Rith, shoved it into the 99, and scratched up enough cash to grab myself a Mayael. I think at that point, Mayael will still like 2-3 dollars, but I was cheap and didn't care enough to buy cards for my janky smashy deck.
My first deck was Oona back in 2008 and im still playing it today, though its fairly modified from what it first was, i have never got tired of it. Its funny because a few of the cards i played in it like: Painter's Servant and Tolarian Academy have now been banned so the deck has changed a lot from what it used to be. My deck today has moved into a more streamlined combo/control deck instead of just a u/b deck jammed with a bunch of good cards. I doubt i will ever take it apart as the queen of the fae is my first edh love! Im sure a few people have similar stories and still play a version of their first edh deck.
Oona Combo Mill. I have no idea what I was thinking. It was good and very easily won more than it lost, but what a terrible idea to start with.
What do you mean by that? Was it too strong for your group? I could see that.
It took me a while to figure out that smaller utility creatures are better than big efficient beaters with some combat ability. I felt that I had to get the most out my deck by cramming it with expensive creatures. Some things in edh are the opposite of what you'd expect.

Yeah, it was like 3 years ago and it was a UB Tutor for infinite combo deck. It could reliably win on turn 5 by milling the table. It was very good at winning but had no regard for the art of game state development. I guess it was "too good" but we have always measured good and bad by the quality of game, NOT whether we win or not.
I don't know why, but for some reason, I was drawn to this massive pile of delicious gelatin combo goodness. Highlight was getting to play the "Planeswalker is a creature" combo before it got errata'd.
Zur the Enchanter. My style has always been buffing with auras and I was oblivious of his reputation. I showed up to play and everyone at the table targeted me--shut me out pretty quick...
I was trying to find people to play and no one was really into it yet so I started to build Wrexial the Risen Deep.
Then I bought this guys Thraximundar deck for 10 bucks and some random mythic. I let my brother complete Wrexial and I kept Thrax.
Savra, Queen of the Golgari. My brother and I introduced EDH to our playgroup and he made a Lyzolda, the Blood Witch deck. Until we were finally joined by Tolsimir Wolfblood, we had quite a few one-on-one games. Then we started giving out Commander precons as birthday and Christmas presents.
My first two games I borrowed a Jhoira of the Ghitu deck and a Mayael the Anima deck. For the next time I played, I had put together a Nath of the Gilt-Leaf pile. It ran good Stax/attrition cards, lots of discard combos, and some elf-tribal aggro. I loved it. Over time the elf tribal was dropped for more blackness... And then there was my Shirei deck.
Sedris, the Traitor King was my first and for some reason all the other players saw me as the biggest threat even though the deck was super jank, so I quickly took it apart and built Rafiq of the Many became a huge threat so I could at least handle some of the hate coming my way and I've loved playing Rafiq ever since.
My first EDH deck was Rune-tail, Kitsune Ascendant. It was pretty mean. Lot's of recursion and creatures that couldn't die to damage or anything damage related(such as deathtouch). It was pretty much an Angel tribal.
Wrexial. It started as a deck built around Wrexial's ability, with plenty of mill and things like guiltfeeder. It eventually evolved into a pretty decent UB control deck.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
i was introduced to EDH by a really cutthroat player, who ran an arcum infinite combo deck... just to stay on par with him i made a Zur deck, only to find once i found the local EDH community that this guy was a real jerk for playing EDH in such a way.
after i met the group i made a drana tribal deck which was pretty fun.
My first deck is actually still in the process of being made. It is a Rith, the Awakener deck that focuses solely on making Saprolings (only Saprolings, no other tokens) and doing cool things with them like sacrificing a few to Nemata, Grove Guardian to multiply all my damage, or using them as fuel for my Goblin Sharpshooter. I've got about 80 cards sleeved up but I still need some of the finishing touches (like Academy Rector) and some of the more expensive lands.
Reaper King, thought if i was getting into edh might as well start with 5c so i could build any mana base i wanted to.

Given up magic because a)its a waste of money b)it sucks the joy out of life c)im doing more interesting things than tapping pieces of plastic that have no intrinsic value.
I encourage you to do the same. Instead of FNM try Friday Night Something Spontaneous. My first EDH deck was a mass destruction Adun Oakenshield deck, focused on Obliterate effects and planning on floating mana for things like Mortivore, Khabal Ghoul, etc, with a few good ETB creatures. It failed miserably, lol. But it was fun to play.
