In my humble opinion, Child of Alara has hideous art. I'm in the process of building a Child of Alara pauper deck (much akin to d0su's) and I finally got ahold of the general itself. I cannot stand the art.
No offense to steve argyle, he does stuff I like but this isn't one of them.
---On a side note If anyone has good ideas for altering the child I would love to hear them.---
So I was wondering if any of you have seen commanders that particularly stand out as something your don't find pleasant to look at.
Would you ever choose not to play a certain commmander becasue of your dislike of the art?
On the other end of this spectrum, does anyone play commanders that aren't very good or just not the type of commander you would play just because you like the art in particular?
I run Jasmine Boreal pretty much entirely for her art. I have some half assed excuse for why I chose her, but it remains that RKF is probably my favorite M:tG artist, that's my favorite color combo, and she makes for an awesome general because of it.
On the other end of the spectrum, I play Hakim, Loreweaver despite not being a big fan of the artwork. It's not awful, but it could have been so much more. The only real issue I have with it is the dragon/drake chilling over his right shoulder, which is kind of sloppy and doesn't really have any contextual reason for being there that I know of. I do really appreciate that he's not the stereotypical fantasy guy, though. I don't think I've ever outright eliminated a general from consideration based on artwork, though.
Edit: After checking the wiki, the drake is his mount. That also explains why he has flying, so it does make some sense for it to be there. Something still feels a bit off about his art, but I can't say what.
I do love me some Gerrard Capashen. There is something to be said about a gritty, realistic warrior staring down the multiverse, swinging from the rigging of a planeswalking airship.
Riku of Two Reflections has really cool art, particularly the play of colours and the facial detail.
I'm in love with Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger's art. it's the scariest looking praetor, and possibly the scariest looking green creature i've ever seen. this opinion may be biased
I would love to agree with you but look at his left hand. It looks like he got his left wrist crushed and it caused the hand to swell up in a grotesque manner.
I have always been fond of Rayne, Academy Chancellor. Nice understated art with a believable outfit.

I like art from Terese Nielson. There's this fading fading fadey fadey style that depicts like some sort of mystery and suspense from the art, defining his work. Example, Basandra, Battle Seraph.
Angus Mackenzie's art is probably the worst of my commanders. Not only is the art bad but here you have this peaceful guy, flavor text is "Battles no longer served a purpose in Karakas." -Angus Mackenzie, Diary and you have a nuclear explosion in the background. Maybe battles no longer served a purpose because everyone died to nuclear fire.
Karrthus looks like just another dragon. That's the trouble with legendary dragons: how do you make them not all look the same? It's not like you can put armor on them or something.

I suppose I'm kinda running Kaysa because of the art. Like someone else said, Olivia's "third leg" is the worst part of the art, but she still has a deck. If I had money, I would totally commission Levelten to alter the art on my copy. I also seem to run purely female commanders. Make of that what you will.
I like Terese Nielsen, Aleksi Briclot, Jason Chan, and Steve Argyle the most. Not everything of theirs, but most of their work is stuff I can get behind.
I don't hate Wayne "Chest Thrust" Reynolds like some other posters, but I can definitely see where they're coming from. Lol.
I totally forgot to mention good art. I've always liked stuff by Richard Kane Ferguson, especially the promo version of Korlash, Heir to Blackblade and Sol'Kanar the Swamp King.
Honorable mention: Oriss, Samite Guardian as the prettiest legend around
woah! ive never even seen the promo korlash.. very insane. but not sure it's better than the original, just for being way brighter.
and nothing beats original akroma as far as prettiest legend imo

Holy Hell! How did they miss that on Olivia?! For that matter, how did I miss that? I always thought that was just her knee, which it probably started out being.

She's holding up the damn dress with her hand.
I'll easily second a vote to Elesh Norn for having some of the most horrifically gorgeous art in MTG.
And another second for Crosis's new art; I love that he looks like a big beetle/dragon hybrid monster.

I really really dislike the art on Wydwen, the Biting Gale, something about it, when i used to run her as my commander i just hated looking at it. The art i really like is Damia, Sage of Stone its very well done and has a sweet fantasy look to it.
Olivia is definately just holding her dress like a lady moving would do during the Victorian age.
I personally am a huge fan of Jaya Ballard.

For whatever reason, I can't stand the big blocky style of his art. It makes everything look like it came out of an anime show on Adult Swim.

I don't like his art either. I play pathfinder and I'm sick of seeing it all over everything they print.
