My friends and I are getting sick of just how degenerate and powerful most of the local EDH decks have become. Too many games lack much interaction and it's just a race to "go off" and the first one that does wins.
So, we've started building peasant (no rares or mythics except for the general) decks. I'm wondering if anyone else does the same thing. We've assembled a small ban list (no uncommon eldrazi, sol ring, top...) and the games are really fun and interactive.
I'm also wondering what generals you guys would recommend for something like this. I'm thinking about starting a Doran deck.
What common/uncommons do you guys always want to use, but they're just not powerful enough?
I run Jor Kadeen with lots of soldiers, some from Onslaught, plus equipment and cards which prevent my opponent from blocking, i.e. Order//Chaos. It's fun because everyone's deck reached some level of degenerate combo madness which just pisses opponents off. I've never played any combo decks myself.

Forgot to mention for those confused why Order//Chaos is in the deck.
We have a similar self-made format too! I guess they were bored of Azami domination.
We call it 'Serf'. (Rhymes with nerf.)
5 rares(excluding General), 15 uncommons, below $5 a card, total deck value below $25.
I have a decklist in my sig too! The reason why we allowed some uncommons and some rares was because it made it more accessible to players with smaller card collections to build their own decks as the uncommons and rares gave them more freedom and liberty to build what they want. You might want to give it a try as it allows newer players to get into the format as well without using a subpar deck compared to the veterans.

Generals? Child of Alara provides something that would otherwise be hard to find at uncommon and lower. Also, 5 colors is key since the power level of the cards is lower. The deck is quite slow though, but maybe that can be patched with some good card choices if aggro decks become too popular.
Since I always recommend Child to anyone who starts one of these threads, I have another suggestion if 5 colors isn't your thing.
It's one of the ideas I wanted to do, but I don't see myself building one in the near future. I have 2 potential generals for one, Kresh, the Bloodbraid, and Edric, Spymaster of Trest. Both seems really good to me. Main reason why I wanted to build Kresh honestly was 'cause Mage Slayer is an uncommon, and really extra damage is always nice, even if it isn't general damage, Still piles on really fast
Are people "going off" during casual play, or it in a league or tourney? If it's just casual, then when someone combos out tell them that they win, and the rest of you are going to "play for second" and he can go sit and twiddle his thumbs for the next hour.

As far as "sub optimal cards" go. I am using some of the older affinity artifact creatures like Myr Enforcer and the like along with Dredge commons.
EDH- Omnath, Locus of Mana: Massive Ramp
EDH- Wort, Boggart Auntie: Gobber Shenanigans
EDH- Rasputin Dreamweaver: Free Mana OH YEAH!
EDH- Arcum Dagsson: Artifacts and Counters
EDH- Zur the Enchanter: Zurtron
EDH- Damia, Sage of Stone: Wizard Tribal
(U/B)(U/B)(U/B) JUMP IN THE LINE, ROCK YOUR BODY IN TIME
(R/W)(R/W)(R/W) RISING FROM THE NEON GLOOM, SHINING LIKE A CRAZY MOON
(U/R)(R/G)(G/U) STEALIN' WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN BUYIN'
Yeah, my friend built one with just cheap evasion guys and it can take down established real EDH decks in a dual.

Since I always recommend Child to anyone who starts one of these threads, I have another suggestion if 5 colors isn't your thing.
You can go with the colors you want or choosing a general. If you want the best colors, black is almost mandatory since Death Denied, Phyrexian Reclamation, and Grim Harvest for card advantage, and Diabolic, Demonic, and Beseech the Queen for great tutors. These help a lot to set up certain card advantage engines, one of the best being Death Denied+ Eternal Witness/Mnemonic Wall/Izzet Chronarch
If you want to choose a general to really build around, then I do not have any good suggestions.
Commons (and uncommons) that stand out as exceptionally powerful. Snakeform, Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast, Loxodon Warhammer, UL manlands, anything with buyback ever.
