Me and a few of my buds are thinking about giving EDH a try in our next session of kitchen table MTG. But i was wondering...
Is it possible to use a planeswalker instead of a legendary creature for my commander? I want to make a BUR deck around my Bolas PW, but I won't have any BUR legends to use as commanders.
EDH is a "casual" format in that you can change the rules to your liking (ex. banning/unbanning unfun cards), so feel free to use Planeswalkers if you'd like. However, a word of caution: I've heard players try this before with bad results. Planeswalkers are very hard to remove, especially when played over and over again. They might lead to stale games, especially involving more broken or combo-centric walkers (Tezzeret, Nicol Bolas, Jace TMS).
a Legendary Creature must be your general as far as I know. so if you wanted to use say the original Nicol Bolas or any legendary creature from Grixis that'd be fine.

Whenever something goes wrong in the storyline just remember: Bolas did it.
Karn isn't a Planeswalker anymore. Get over it.
BUR legendary creatures: Crosis, Garza Zol, Gwendlyn Di Corci, Lord of Tresserhorn, Mishra (useless in Commander though), Nicol Bolas, Sedris, Sol'kanar, Tetsuo Umezawa, and Thraximundar.
Most of those should be fairly easy/cheap to pick up (or just proxy) if you want to go the BUR route. I'd advise against using the planeswalker version of Nicol Bolas as a commander since he's pretty strong in that format, especially when you can cast him multiple times (although Sorin would be the single most unbalanced planeswalker-as-commander).
It's a variant format, so it really is up to you guys. For example, despite it being banned, I played Gifts Ungiven in my group for months because I never really used it to screw anyone over or start up combos. I'd use it to fetch up answers, like looking for 3 or 4 different Wrath cards when the board was looking nasty. I took it out eventually when a new player got uppity about me 'ignoring' the banlist, though.
If you and your playgroup want to allow that, it's up to you, but I'd look into getting ahold of a BUR general if you want to play in other groups that may not support it. For the same reason, I'd try to avoid building your deck around the 'Walker as the main lynchpin to the point it doesn't work without it. Heck, you could just ask your group if they mind you proxying the card, I doubt they will.

Generally speaking, I don't mind if someone ignores the ban list so long as they aren't doing degenerate things with the cards. But if, unlike you, they do un-fun things with banned cards and get snarky at being bugged about it, well, I have a copy of Braids I'm happy to bring in as a temporary commander.

Yeah. My whole group was telling him I wasn't being a jerk about it, but he insisted it was all a ruse and that I'd start doing degenerate crap with it. I told him "if I start that, you really think they won't ban it after like, one time?". Partially it was so he wouldn't whine nonstop any time he saw me playing, partially it was because we were just really getting into EDH so I didn't want to scare off a potential new player, and partially it was so I wouldn't have to switch it out if I went out of town and played with a different group.
Rules can be flexible by play group. Just like this weekend I had to remind my playgroup that Emrakul, the Aeons Torn was still banned and that yes I can use Memnarch as a Commander. Pretty casual group to play with as I'm pretty competitive, but they don't mind when I play cards that are "banned".

It would seem to me that using 'narchy as a Commander would be near impossible. A zero color identity for your 100 card deck? Are there enough non-basic colorless lands to accomplish that?

Actually, color identity has been changed so that you can use Memnarch as a general for a mono blue deck, Bosh for mono red, etc.
However, if you just want to house-rule it and allow them, I'm pretty confident that they wouldn't break the format. Tezzeret might, actually, but most are balanced enough that they wouldn't be unfair or anything.
Wasn't there a tournament not too long ago on these forums where people used 'Walkers as generals? IIRC, the quickest one to get banned was Tezzeret, the Seeker. I think I'd rather see Sorin than Tezz as someone's general, personally.
Oh hai necro.
To answer the question, yes there are deck on this forum based around colorless generals. Examples are in the thread at the top of the board.
Memnarch, however, has a color identity of U. This change was made many months ago from the casting cost to every mana symbol on the card.
Sorry to tell you this, but only legendary creatures can be used as "commanders" in a commander deck. Also remember that legendary enchantment creatures are still legendary creatures and that your deck must be at least 100 cards. Although, I think a planeswalker may be tournament legal in a commander deck. If you are having more trouble and nobody online can answer your questions, there are usually Friday night tournaments/draft events you can go to which may have someone who can answer your question.

pretty sure 3 years is long enough to figure it out on their own. Nice necro...

Ban sorin though, he'd be a mean and stupid good general.

It is actually possible to make a completely colorless deck, look at Karn, Silver golem decks. Here is an example http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=359130&highlight=Karn%2C+silver+golem I will say that they look incredibly difficult to build. A Memnarch deck is allowed to have blue in it as of a fairly recent update.
