Some of us like huge, splashy spells, some of us like cheap, efficient spells. I suspect that my decks tend to run towards the cheap end of EDH, cmc-wise, but I'm curious as to what sorts of cards other people tend to use.
If you're using mws or whatever there's tools to get the average cmc, otherwise estimate it I suppose.
I believe most decks will fall around the 3-5 range unless they are combo decks or "special builds", say Erayo lock, Sasaya ramp or 99 Mountain Ashling*
*Mathematically, I think 99 mountain Ashling would theoretically have an undefined average CMC (CMC approaching infinity).
I usually like playing low cmc and efficient cards but I find that in EDH, cheap cards just don't cut it if a game goes long. Even in 1v1, I find that if I have nothing big by the fifth turn, I'll either get stomped by combo or overrun by aggro. I'd say my curve stays from around 3.5-4.2.
Emmara is like the worst parts of Legends and Homelands got pregnant, aborted the fetus, tossed it in the trashcan, set it on fire and wrapped the corpse in a Dragon's Maze pack wrapper.
The average is around 4-5 for all my decks, with it being closer to the 5 range for my Geth deck.
While most decks need their normal utility cards, you need powerful action cards in multiplayer. There's almost no avoiding it. Topdecking a Birds of Paradise for example is underwhelming to say the least when you're dealing with big guys.

Doesn't the average of a 99 land Ashling deck equal 2? Ashlin is CMC 2 and since we are not including lands it should be 2 divided by 1. I suppose you mean not counting Ashling the decks average is undefined, which I think is true. The Average of [ ] isn't 0.
Anyway my five color sliver queen deck, which I thought was big and splashy, only has a CMC of 3.2834. I guessed it was 4-5 since it has a lot of wraths and heavy ended stuff, but the low cost ramp must make up for the higher cost of the rest of the deck.

im putting down for 3-4since thats where mine all seem to fall. between the 6+ big spells and the 1-3 cost stuff, i think that most decks avg out to that.

In multiplayer, mine hover in the 3-4 range. I'd rather just draw a lot of cards and play lots of efficient spells, but some "haymaker" type cards sneak in. My 1 vs. 1 decks tend to be 2.5ish or lower. For instance, the average life loss to Confidant in my Nath deck was 1.9ish without Top or Scroll rack.
This seems to be lower than the curves most people are posting... that's interesting. Teeg's 3.03 may be be influenced by the general, but it probably has more to do with my playstyle and the streamlining and countless revisions to which I have subjected the deck. Similarly, Rasputin has tons of high CMC spells, but it also has lots of cheap mana ramp and library manipulation to help burn through cards really quickly.
My Spirit of the Night deck is 2.97-3.0 (I haven't completely finalized the list), but it's a 1v1 deck, so it's supposed to have a lower curve.
Again, I think this is an interesting analysis. I like the insight it gives to individuals' deckbuilding preferences.
hmm, really? They're about what I expected, and they pretty much confirm what I thought: my decks are significantly cheaper than most. most of my decks are in the 2-3 range, with some exceptions (i.e. my scion of the ur-dragon deck, since technically I don't intend to CAST most of the enormous fatties...although i just checked and apparently it's still only 3.52. so go figure).
typically when I'm building i focus on 2 and 3 cmc cards, with 4 cmc for good cards and 5-6 cmc for pretty bomby cards. I usually avoid going about 6 unless it really fits well into the deck.
I'm hoping my newest project, angus mackenzie, will get me down to around 2 cmc. I'm planning on packing the deck with extremely efficient creatures, counterspells, and a few high-power draw engines to power through the deck.
wow i thought these numbers would be wayyyy higher for multiplayer
Why? People generally play equipment, acceleration and answers, as well as lands and all of those will lower the cmc. if you are relying on hitting 5+ lands before you can do anything you are never going to win.
Wow, you guys fail at math. Nothing is undefined, as you are not dividing by zero, you are dividing by the number of cards with a cost in the deck.
If you are talking average CMC of cards with a cost, it would be 2 for Ashling (due to the general).
Ah, right.... I fail at Mathematics. I usually don't include my general when calculating the average CMC (the general is usually in the MWS sideboard anyway :p)
I have 32 lands in my Karrthus deck and my average CMC is 2.45.
2.45 sounds a little too low for Karrthus EDH. Did you somehow count lands in your calculation of the deck's average CMC? Lands are usually not counted in arriving at the deck's simple average CMC (as per opening OP).
~9 is the average CMC of my highest CMC deck, but it's playing Leviathan/Serpent/Octopus/Squid Tribal.
This is really interesting. It does seem that the deck will probably have nothing to do during the first few turns. How does the deck look like, anyway?

I'm pretty sure that's BS...it sounds like it's mono-blue, and there's only a handful of blue creatures with cmc of 9 or more....even with colorless stuff there's less than 30, and a lot of them are total unplayable garbage.
I'm also curious what kind of crazy deck the guy with <1 cmc has
