I like to play theme decks, and want to have a mono colored deck of each of the 5 colors. I am currently missing blue and green, but have green figured out. The problem is blue, I don't like game winning combos, or annoying things in general. I can think of two themes: Counterspells, and Wizards. Counterspells just wouldn't be fun to play against and would have almost no win condition at all. Wizards has a reputation of being broken, and I'm not sure I could do much with it unless I ran combo.
What do you people here on MTGS think? Is it possible to make a themed mono-U deck that isn't broken, or will I end up with a broken deck that I'll never play? Thanks for all your help in advance :D.
Thada Adel, Acquisitor would be fun to root around your opponents deck for fun artifacts, Azami, Lady of Scrolls could be for simple draw, or combined with wizards for even more draw, Braids, Conjurer Adept has some fun combos with Vanishing and others where only you get her effect. Or just play Empress Galina and say MINE to any legend. Or anything with Leyline of Singularity
I'd go with a Sakashima, the Imposter deck filled with Clones and Mind Controls. You can guarantee no one will have a bigger threat than you! Add Power Matrix so your clones can outclass the enemy, plus blink effects to surprise opponents. You can add a few fatties of your own, like Lorthos, the Tidemaker and Sphinx Ambassador, then use counterspells to protect them while you bash face.
As a connoisseur of fun, interesting matches, I still to this day have not been able to craft that "perfect deck"; the deck that I can play and have fun over time, doesn't get boring, but simultaneously is fun to play against. I honestly don't think it exists. It's like a unicorn. A ninja unicorn.
I play mono-U with Lorthos, the Tidemaker, with the theme being that every card in the deck (be it through name, card type, or even art) must have something to do with the sea. Makes for a hilariously bad deck that's fun as hell to play.
On a side note, sea-themed non-creature spells are very hard to come by. Bamboozle anyone?
ps: Merfolk and Cephalids are too easy - try not to just default to these kinds of cards, it makes it more interesting. Putting an Air Bladder on a Pirate Ship is a sick play that will get laughs every time, whereas just playing some merfolk and attacking with a Lord or 6 out is less fun
Draw cards, then beat down with improbable sea monsters. Get a bunch of Leviathan-esque cards like Kederekt Leviathan and that new one that makes all lands into islands + has islandwalk. And stuff like Deep Sea Kraken and Quest for Ula's Temple for the lulz. Note: I do not recommend actually running Leviathan.

The above sounds a bit like my Rayne deck, of course my creature base is a bit more varied, lots of Sphinxes for instance.

I'm doing a color cycle of generals too and I'm really in love with my Braids, Conjurer Adept deck. You can create absolute chaos in multiplayer or hold it all to yourself, and the combos don't get too broken.
You can play ninjas with Higure, the Still Wind if you want a theme deck. I had a Higure deck for 1vs1, and it was not even that bad (well, I guess no mono blue deck packed with counterspells can be bad). If you don't like that idea, take a look at King Chewie's deck database, you will surely find something there.
I know about the database, but it doesn't tell you if a deck has a theme to it or not. The problem with ninjas is that there are 8 in existence, and half of them are black.

Thada Adel doesn't really have much of a theme there, and I hate Thada Adel, Acquisitor tbh, my mono red deck was made just to beat one. Azami has a reputation for being combolicious and broken, so I'd rather stay away from it. Braids doesn't have a "theme" to her really. Same with the empress.

Seems like an interesting idea, not sure if there are enough things that do it. Will keep this idea in mind though.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how it would work out in actual play.

That actually sounds like an interesting deck. Fill it with Krakens, Leviathans, Octopus's, and Serpents. Will also keep this in mind.

I play summit simmilar i call it MONSTERS OF THE SEAAAAA!! its just huge krakens leviathans and octopi with a few crabs for fun Mono-blue Beats is the way to go and Stormtide Leviathan just makes the deck so funny
My vote is for wizards. You could use Azami, Lady of scrolls to draw up a bunch of utility wizards then Day of the Dragons for the win instead of a more traditional combo assembly. I'm in the process of building one of each color also. What were the other generals you chose?
Unfortunately, your theme choices for blue are as follows.
1) Completely Broken in half and once again.
I played a 2HG at my LGS and got paired with an azami player, He took 6 Extra turns in a row with no help from me, I felt really bad at the end of the game because it was basically just him comboing out. And when I talked to him afterwards, he was like "I don't even have the broken combos in here."
2) Completely and utterly dead.
The thing with blue cards is, unfortunately, they're either awesome or they suck. There doesn't feel as much to exist a middle ground like there is for the other colors.
Mistform ultimus. Run a bunch of blue lords like merfolk reejery, scion of oona, etc.
Then play some changelings or mistforms and the other standard blue edh stuff and you're good to go!

That actually sounds really interesting. The problem is that I don't know if there are enough mono-blue lords out there to make it happen.
Dude. There's no reason why Wizards has to mean lameness or cheese.
I use my theme decks to tell a loose story--it's how I like to play EDH. So my mono-black Baron Sengir deck is called "The Baron's Army", and plays like how I would envision his army playing.
My mono-blue deck, "The Thing That Should Not Be", is all about the idea of blue wizards dabbling in Magic beyond their comprehension and summoning terrifying creatures beyond their control. My general is Arcanis the Omnipotent, who is cool but not broken; he makes an awesome leader for wizards, and you'd be surprised at how many blue "untap creature" wizards there are. I build my base of goofy but utilitarian wizards, using almost all soft-counters and anything that seems wizardly (including familiars, such as Walking Atlas and Mulldrifter).
Eventually, you're able to build up enough resources to drop a fat Iceberg or Everflowing Chalice, and then summon something horrifying past the comprehension of mortal wizards--say, Marit Lage from Dark Depths, a signed copy of Leviathan (I met Mark Tedin, he's awesome) or an Eldrazi or two (such as a signed Emrakul, the Aeons Torn--did I mention I met Mark Tedin?). I protect them with Willbenders, Daring Apprentices, and possibly Unified Will, then my terrifying creations begin the quest for global domination.
It's hard for people to cry cheese when you're playing with goofy fun wizards like Apprentice Wizard and Merfolk Thaumaturgist. No one can really ***** when you're running blue with two "hard" counters (I like Lay Bare a lot as well) and no infinte combos.
But most importantly, I love the deck, and I love the idea that blue wizards push their research too far, and that in the end there are horrifying, far reaching consequences for reckless magic. I like the idea that right after they kill everyone else on board, the horrifying creatures that have been released by the hubris of wizards quickly turn on those that summoned them.
Anyways, that's just my take. I found that if I don't find a way to tell a story with my deck I get bored pretty quick; as it is I've found a blue deck that is awesome and fun to play with and against.
Also, one time I swung with FOUR Leviathans in a single turn due to cloning shennanigans. That was pretty legendary and hilarious.
That Faerie from timespiral that gives creatures with flying +1/+0

Sakashima the Impostor copycat/theft deck, possibly abusing some CIP-triggers & such.
Chisei, Heart of Oceans with cumulative upkeep & general counter abuse
Kami of the Crescent Moon with the rack
Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar bypass drawstep locks

Again, interesting.
Hmm. Most cumulative upkeep cards in blue are underwhelming, and not much else use for counters that I can see.
Too narrow.
The card itself is interesting, but how would I create the locks?
