Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated. I use Megrim / Oppression as a nice little combo whenever possible. Misers Cage also enables me to force the opponent to live off the top of his deck.
After some playtesting, I came up with a priority list of what to do when you have multiple discard spells handy. Of course, this isn't set in stone. It's often more important to stick to your mana curve and throw in the Rack whenever you can.
If you only have enough mana for one spell:
1. One-use - Duress, Hymn to Tourach, Ravenous Rats
These are the most powerful discards. You want to get rid of the opponent's removal so it's safe for your permanents to stick on the field. You want to open with Duress instead of a Dark RitualHippie in case the opponent is packing a Bolt or Path.
2. Passive - Honden of Night's Reach, Liliana Vess, Hypnotic Specter
These discard cards are reusable without requiring any more mana. The opponent is forced to deal with them immediately, or you gain card advantage. You want them out early so they can get more opportunities to trigger.
3. Activated - Nezumi Shortfang, Scepter of Fugue
Use these last, or else they'll compete with your other spells for your mana. They make great mana sinks when you've dumped the rest of your hand.
If you have mana for multiple spells:
1. Opponent reveals, your choice
These spells are awesome but often have strings attached. It would be frustrating to try to Duress after the opponent already got rid of his noncreature/nonland cards. At the very least, you get to see his cards, so you'll know what to expect later and can plan accordingly.
2. Opponent's choice
3. Discard at random
When given the choice, the opponent gets rid of the weakest or least relevant cards in his hand. This gives your random discards a better chance of snagging something good. If you use the random discards first, they might just hit the weak cards that he would've discarded anyways. But by themselves, the random discards are more powerful, so go with those if you have to pick between the two.
So in a perfect world, I would open with Swamp->Dark Ritual->Dark Ritual->Duress->Ravenous Rats->Hymn to Tourach. If I had only one Ritual instead, I would skip the Rats.
I haven't been playing discard for very long, so if this is wrong, feel free to correct me.
About the dark ritual, I rescently reduce the count from 4 to 3, because, the deck is usually light in mana, and I'd rather not draw dark ritual when I don't need it.
Pro tip: Play 4 Dark Rituals. Consistency is important. Playing with 4 copies allows for greater consistency. You should remember that in general.
In case of Megrim, I use to run with just 4 quests and no Megrim, and I found that I was lacking winning condition, I think Megrim and the Quest work great together: if the player wants to play instead of keeping the cards because of Megrim, well he'll gets wacked by the Quest, if not, a discard may cause him to loose two more life.
Pro tip: Don't play with Megrim. "It's bad and you should feel bad for playing it." Quest is a great win condition for multi player and the Rack is a solid win con for single player. The rack doesn't require the other player to be at 0 cards, while more than one quest in play can kill very quickly. Megrim is a waste of a card. This Primer has a whole list of cards that would be better for you than a megrim would.
It turns out that building a proper discard deck is probably the toughest type of deck I tried to build so far... I tried many variation without succeeding building a very good discard decks.
There is a reason why discard decks work the way they do. They don't work like a normal control decks. The primary goal is to reduce their hand to 0 cards and then keep it that way. Also, discard decks don't mind/actually like game states where everyone is top decking. When playing multiplayer, I really suggest you think about cards like Geth's Grimoire and Words of Waste. that is a nasty combo, however, both of those cards are nice by themselves in multiplayer. In singlepalyer, Words of Waste isn't that good, in multiplayer you are giving up your draw to make two or more people discard. This is literally a 2 for 1 or better. Words of Waste is a good target for self discard by the Rats as well when you already have one in play. More than one Grimoire in play can get really silly. unearthing a rat to discard one card and draw 2, 3, or more cards? Count me in.

I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.

Drain Life suggests it on the Primer. Nyxathid and Tombstalker are the best beaters for discard.
With Black Knight and Carnophage, i like the way it plays out with mana curve. Four hypnotic specters would work very nicely in this though.
Why not have some quick creatures on the table when im hymn-ing/etc?
@ everyone above: The Gruul draz specter is fairly slow, as well as abyssal nocturnus. I recommend using nyxathid, which I am surprised to not have seen yet.
see, this is why i subscribed to this forum because its been almost 11 years since ive played. forget the hypnotic specter, im adding 4 nyxathids. Thanks for the great advice!
thats a really powerful card for a deck like mine...maybe too powerful. how legal is it?
i tried thought gorger as a 4th nyxathid ( i dont have one!)
and he isnt bad, working great with necropotencephyrexian arena and dead discard/lands late game! he also can recycle your hand to find what you need, not to mention getting a 4/4 *minimum* trampler for 4 , i recommend testing him !
First and foremost, Megrim needs to go. It's taking up slots that could be much better spent, and it just straight up never delivers. Trust me, it's not a good card.
I'd also up your number of win conditions. Right now, the only things that really make use of that nice discard engine you have going are Nyxathid and The Rack. That being said, Vampire Nighthawk really has no place in this deck. Yes, it's a good card, but it isn't making use of the rest of the deck.
I'd recommend:
-4 Vampire Nighthawk
+2 Nyxathid
+2 The Rack
You might also consider Hypnotic Specter, for some recurring discard in a nice 2/2 flying body.
Nezumi Shortfang would be nice here, maybe replace the mind twists since you already have a lot of discard...
I would rather run 4 racks and 0 megrim than a 2-2 split.

An ability exists on the stack independently of its source. Removal of the source after that time won't affect the ability. Some abilities cause a source to do something rather than the ability. Any activated or triggered ability that references information about the source checks that information when the ability is put onto the stack. Otherwise, it will check that information when it resolves. If the source is no longer in the zone it's expected to be in, its last known information is used.
All good advice. I should have prefaced with a couple things though:
First, I mostly play only two headed giant and free for alls. I rarely play 1-on-1, so this needs to be able to do heavy damage and also protect me from my creatures. I'm building the deck cause I have most of the cards lying around already. In two headed giant, I find Megrim not so bad.
My meta is pretty creature heavy, I have one friend that mostly plays an aggro/control fairy deck that I have to deal with almost every game (for now at least). Hence the nighthawks so I don't get flown over by turn 5. Still will prob take them out.
Already have 4 Specters in there.
I'm just playing casual so I have no intention of spending $$ on thoughtseize. i don't mind buying $10 cards but I don't buy them if they're just to do crazy stuff on turn 1.
I like funeral charm cause it's instant speed and gives me options. I have a separate MBC deck that uses Tendrils, I wanted this to be primarily discard focused.

I agree with you on Funeral Charms: an instant discard, or a 1/1 killer, or a swampwalk factor....a MUST HAVE!! I can't imagine not having 4 in a discard deck!!!
I also think: Quest for the nihil stone is a must have too, especially in MP, if you get it out first turn, you're in really good shape!
I'm debating about duress, it's a great card on 1vs1, but I want hit more in MP.
Also, if you want your friend to hate you: check out Pox or Small Pox; lovely effect. (note that in my deck, i m switching to Pox to try it out).
Unnerve is also a nice MP card; works great with Geth's Grimoire.
The new card I'm also intending to put in my deck is: Screeching Buzzard.
Mutilate works great against faeries (swarm of small creatures)
Royal Assassin is good, but he's not going to prevent you from loosing.
His kill rate is too low. Also, people know he's out, and will either kill him (a 1/1 is too fragile) or play knowing he's there. (if only he had haste :P)
One more point: mana wise, 20 isn't enough I think
and I would replace the cabal land for: Bokuja Bog, you don't want to help your opp which plays with their graveyard... ;-)
----
Note about Nyxathid: I used to play with it, and sadly it wasn't the card which gave me the victory, not prevented me from loosing...
Main reproach: he has no invasion!!!, so can be easily block by a simple 1/1... I took it out and don't recommand it. I much prefer Gruul to him for sure!

Multiplayer wise, pox turned out a killer, as well as Geth's Grimoire; I always had my hand full of cards... which is great.
Also: Viridian Longbow is a big win in this deck.
Couple with the hyppy, awesome!! Instant discard or 1/1 killer... Works great!!! Without the hyppy, it still a great add on; I'm wondering if I should put more in it.
Regarding the choice of the rat, the rotten rats has the drawback of making you discard, so I thought about swapping in with the ravenous rats for SP games; I didn't, the reason being: the unearth ability is really strong!! It's a guaranty discard when it's in your graveyard!
And couple with Geth's grimoire, well considering it as a cycling card.
I'm not sure if I like the Honden that much, it's a lot of mana... But it's a nice way to make sure your opponent discard everyturn for free! and enchantment is harder to kill than a creature or an artifact.
Any thoughts?

So I'm trying to get one of my friends to play MTG with me to increase the number of people I can play against.
He doesn't want to spend money on cards until he has tried the game for a bit.
I offered to let him use my Mono Black Discard deck since he likes the look of the black cards the most, but it has been a while since I have used it so it is outdated and a bit scrambled.
I have some cards I have added in that I think will make it better but any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
So there it is. Honestly there is a lot of open space for the number of a certain card I put in, or even a bunch of other cards that I have not listed.
Also I know that the methods of creature removal I have listed are bot that great and If there is a better option I can easily take out seal of Doom/Fleshbag Marauder for a better card.
Thanks again and as a final note I would prefer it if the cards you mentioned did not cost too much since I am on a limited budget. Thanks again.
Royal Assassin is just a no here considering its a slow paced card and the fact the creature's already done the deed when its tapped. Junk it in favor of other removal.
I don't have much experience with discard, but Distress and Mind Sludge may be good bets. One allows you to pick the card you want gone, and the other is a cheaper Mind Twist.

Okay I've thought about the deck a bit more and come up with a hopefully better version.
I am trying to only use cards in this deck that have a converted mana cost of 4 or less so that mana is not a problem, that is the reason why I do not use cards like corrupt or mind sludge even though they are both very good. Any more advice would be appreciated.
Dude, the royal assassin is classic good. Your opponents will fear attacking every turn. If they can even get something out of their hand before you make them discard it. One of my favorite cards for discard is Vedalken Orrery. Dark ritual is a must though just because of the ridiculous things you can do.

Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated. I use Megrim / Oppression as a nice little combo whenever possible. Misers Cage also enables me to force the opponent to live off the top of his deck.
Heres the listing-
4 Black Knight
4 Carnophage
1 thrashing Wumpus (why, looking back, i dont know how i pulled this off w. 17swamps)
4 Dark Ritual
3 Innocent Blood
3 Duress
2 Addle
4 Megrim
4 Oppression
2 Misers Cage
2 Bad Moon
so yeah any feedback would be cool. thanks!!
If anyone in the NYC (specifically brooklyn) area knows of a cool arcade/meetup spot for mtg and what have you, please message me.
thanks again

Mutavault is a nice option too.
Here is it what it looks like right now.
4 Hypnotic Specter
4 Abyssal Nocturnus
4 Ravenous Rats
2 Fleshbag Marauder
1 Mindslicer
4 The Rack
4 Hymn To Tourach
4 Cry of Contrition
2 Persecute
3 Seal of Doom
3 Megrim
So there it is. Honestly there is a lot of open space for the number of a certain card I put in, or even a bunch of other cards that I have not listed.
Also I know that the methods of creature removal I have listed are bot that great and If there is a better option I can easily take out seal of Doom/Fleshbag Marauder for a better card.
Thanks again and as a final note I would prefer it if the cards you mentioned did not cost too much since I am on a limited budget. Thanks again.
junk Revive the Fallen. Dark Ritual can be thrown in to speed up spells. Doomblade can be replaced for Seal of Doom.
Don't bother with Megrim and stick to stuff like corrupt and Tendrils of Corruption.
Sasky for the Sig.
I am in your [PACK]. Watching you... do... something.

BelzDecks: Check out my current decks !
BelzCards: Look at all the neat cards I made up !
I am trying to only use cards in this deck that have a converted mana cost of 4 or less so that mana is not a problem, that is the reason why I do not use cards like corrupt or mind sludge even though they are both very good. Any more advice would be appreciated.
19 Swamp
Creatures
4 Hypnotic Specter
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 Nyxathid
2 Nezumi Shortfang
3 Black Knight
4 The Rack

EDIT: Hopefully final copy of the deck, realized that if megrim goes that abyssal nocturnus might as well too because of their similar abilities.
Thanks to Hero's of the Planes Studios for the Awesome Sig!!!
