I just joined MTGO this weekend, and have been playing using the "beginner tokens" that allows new players to play against each other to learn the program. I've been playing a BR aggro-control list with only the cards I was given and have been shredding through opponents (likely because they're relatively new to Magic, too). Among the cards that the program came with was Font of Return. I decided I'd give it a try, and I was absolutely stunned at how well it works. It comes down early as an innocuous enchantment, but is absolutely back-breaking when I finally return 3 creatures from my graveyard. that card advantage and selection played a huge role in the victories I've had.
Now the decks I'm playing with and against are definitely not Pauper-competitive (I'm main-decking Flesh to Dust, just to give you an idea). It's been successful in these much slower games, and I'm thinking it could probably have a good shot in Pauper, now that I've tried it. It could be a good fit to top the curve of aggressive strategies using black, also useful to go over the top in control lists, or even abused in lists we've seen before here with Auramancer.
It is better than some of the other options that can net the same amount of cards for a few reasons. The general reason I see is it can come down early and has a chance to land before your opponent can counter it. It also adds to Devotion which is good for Devotion builds. Also, as you said, it can be abused with Auramancer, which is great!
I haven't got around to using it yet though as Ghoulcaller's Chant is my favorite recursion choice since I love Zombie decks and its interaction with Nameless Inversion.
I'd definitely have to disagree on Tortured Existence being better. It's just different and needs a more specific build while Font can work with any deck that runs Black. I'm not saying Font is better either.
