I put it together and played some games against my kid, but it almost always goes infinite with green mana but needs blue or red to win. What am I missing? Arbor Elf and Utopian Sprawl both need to be aimed at forests and unless you have 2 Sprawls you just end up using the U to untap the elf. Seems bad, right?
yea the "real" freed decks use Karoos, and play out similarly to Esper Familiar and are RUG. They use Lifespark Spellbomb to animate a karoo with land enchantments on it to make the mana then use either viridian longbow or kaervek's torch to win.
Real? This one seems to be popping up now and doing okay on the Daily events. I've seen Axebane Guardian based decks too, but this one is being played now and doing way better than I would think.
I guess the word "traditional" would be more correct. I'm not sure what the real upsides are to playing this over the original except maybe a turn quicker in ideal scenarios, but the deck just loses without either satyr or the elf, whereas, the more traditional lists could win if they didn't have the elf or satyr by having that lifespark spellbomb line. I guess this about as all in as the Freed strategy gets. It does look pretty fast in those nut hands.
I like the infinite combo aspect, but I wonder if it would not be easier to simply run blue/black and use Pack Gnarlid and either Kraul Warrior or Capsize.
The decklist is cool, but I don't know. There are so many things that can make this combo go belly up. I know, I was playing around with Freed with pingers in a control deck, and the removal was just too much to handle. I suppose the deck could go off on turn 3 (with a really lucky hand of Arbor Elf, 2x Utopia Sprawl, 2 forests, freed from the real and Train of Thought). Cool concept; We need another few more copies of Freed to make it a real deck, imo.
It's not really about the finisher (a Kaervek's torch can't exactly be chumped either). Although Presence is definitely better than Gnarlid or Kraul. It's about the consistency of the combo. You have to do a lot of digging for expensive pieces and essentially do nothing while your opponent is beating you down or is just going to counter/ destroy what you have.
It's a green/Blue deck right? Why not just turn it into a turbofog that happens to finish that way. Reduce the redundancy and increase the control elements.

Do you add dig/draw to get the pieces or fog effects? It looks like dig works best right now.
My real issue is not getting it to go off so much as going off yields infinite green mana with my thumb in my ass because I need blue or red.
The deck essentially needs Utopia Sprawl or Fertile Ground in order to get the right mana. This is workable.
I suppose a non-dedicated Turbo Fog deck could be possible. Prepare at least 10 slots for fog effects. Moment's Peace, Fog, Respite. Have minimum 8 digging spells.
If you have 1 Kaervek's torch and maybe 1-2 Train of Thought, you can make room for all of this and a couple counters.
It needs the forest to have BOTH or TWO of them on the Forest to work - the blue it makes from the enchantment is the blue to untap the enchanted creature. You net G each time, but use the blue you get.

I posted a version of that Axebane Guardian deck mentioned earlier, found here:
