Prid3, would you mind terribly posting a list of cards to acquire from EMA now that the price is (semi) reasonable? And then what to do with those cards (e.g., deck list) since some of use (mostly me) haven't played with those cards much or at all due to the previous price tag. Thanks in advance for consideration.

EMA isn't a set where you can propose budget decks and budget purchases. The prices of the "cards that matter" didn't really change and EMA isn't a "build around me" set. The "good cards" are playable in countless archetypes because they're removal, tutors, card draw, ramp, etc. as opposed to unique effects. Otherwise it's extremely difficult to hammer out a "buy list" that will appease everyone because for some people that will mean $20.00 and others it could be $100.00 or more. Also, it's too late for me to scream at everyone to buy as many Mana Crypts as you possibly can at ~$60.00 and all I can say is that I'm glad I pestered my roommate until he caved and got his.
When it comes to decks, again, it's so meta dependent that it's hard to give meaningful advice. If you can afford 4x Entomb and 4x Mystical Tutor for Reanimator then that's awesome but I'm guessing that most people can't and/or don't want turn 2-3 combo decks. Most of EMA is "broken garbage" that costs a lot of money and doesn't lead to fair games.
Deathrite Shaman and Blood Artist reprints excite me for lowering their price to something manageable for casual multiplayer decks.
For commander purposes, I'm looking to pick up a foil night's whisper with the newer art and potentially a foil toxic deluge if the price stabilizes to something reasonable. Mana crypt would be appreciated, but I'll probably trade for one of the other printings once they drop to a more attainable price. Sylvan library may make its way into one of my commander decks; it will probably drop to about $10-15 which is semi-reasonable to trade for.
Most of the rest are things I just traded off before the reprint to avoid losing value. Let's hope conspiracy 2 is almost as good for mid-level reprints.

Don't hold your breath. Sylvan Library is an EDH staple that sees plays in 100% of competitive Green shells. It's easily, EASILY in the top 5 best Green cards and you can make a strong case for it being the overall strongest. No hyperbole. Toxic Deluge is the single best removal spell in the entire format. It makes Damnation look like a joke by comparison. Mana Crypt is the literal strongest card in the format and it baffles me that some websites were selling them for ~$60.00 on launch. 100% of decks that "want to win" should play it.

Agreed. If you see copies of Sylvan Library for under... say $23-24? Get them. It's not coming back after that point. It'll be back above $30 in a heartbeat. Good card is good.
Same with Sneak Attack, which is currently under $30. If it stays there, I'll eat my hat. That card is all levels of broken (and makes me want to rebuild Sneak / Teferi's Veil).
Yeah, Sylvan Library shot back up to 24$ today. Set hasn't even been released yet and the price of all these cards keeps fluctuating. Damned secondary market.
Gamble is still holding strong at $11.99, Necropotence is maintaining at $9.99. We'll have to wait and see.
I may just pony up and buy a playset of Sylvan Library when it's released, for fear of the card rising further.
I disagree. I understand that it makes it difficult to "buy in" to eternal formats like Vintage and Legacy, but the reserved list is what keeps me from losing a ton of money because my ABUR duals are reprinted. Why would anyone drop thousands of dollars on a deck now, if there is the fear that they wouldn't be able to get out of it and at least break even? Trust me, I get the arguments against it, but I think it was a smart decision.

How can you possibly know that? Force of Will isn't on the Reserve list, and this is its first non-promo reprin. Tarmogoyf has been reprinted twice recently, and it's still $200. None of us have middle knowledge. The reserved list was made to protect people's investments, bottom line.

So the reserved list is necessary to protect your investments yet non-reserved list cards holding their value despite reprints is evidence? None of us may have 'middle knowledge' but reasoned inferences can still be made.
Modern decks cost nearly as much as legacy ones yet can have any card reprinted (or banned arbitrarily for that matter). Are their investments not in need of protecting? If I drop money on Scalding Tarn, Liliana of the Veil, or Tarmogoyf I am not relying on a reserved list to protect me from devaluing I am investing in a format with the knowledge that my cards may lose value (or gain value). With WoTCs limited print runs on value cards the reserved list is redundant and the cards on it arbitrary.
Did you buy your ABUR duals at current market value or have you held on to some over time/invested in them at lower value knowing that they couldn't be reprinted and would only go up? There is a difference in not losing significant value and hording for profit which has become the issue with reserved list cards more than their present scarcity.
There is a difference in not losing significant value and hording for profit which has become the issue with reserved list cards more than their present scarcity.
Aye mate, this is my biggest hate-on for the Reserved List. I acknowledge both sides of the debate, I was all for the Reserved List in the past, but as time has gone on I have come to see it as the biggest flaw in Magic's history.
Still, it is what it is, and I have little hope that WotC will actually do anything about it. I content myself with less elegant options - Sacred Foundry > Plateau. Who the hell can afford a Plateau? It's superior to Sacred Foundry in every way. As a Player, why don't I have access to Plateau? The Reserve List. Well, that and I'm definitely not a millionaire. At least... I don't think I am?
.... ?
Anyway, aside from the Reserve List my only other true beef with the game is WotC's reprint policy. I know, everyone says how MtG has survived all these years over games like Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon, but I've yet to see any direct evidence that the Reserve List and Reprint Policy is what has kept MtG afloat. The RL & RP serve collectors, not WotC. Eh, at the end of the day I just shake my head.
So the reserved list is necessary to protect your investments yet non-reserved list cards holding their value despite reprints is evidence? None of us may have 'middle knowledge' but reasoned inferences can still be made.
The price of Tarmogoyf isn't going down, but the price of Force of Will has, and fairly significantly. I own two playsets. I have essentially lost $240 right now with this reprint. My point was that it is impossible to say that "If the reserve list wasn't there then no one would have to drop thousands of dollars on things like ABUR duals in the first place." We can't know that. We don't ever know for sure what reprinting a card will do. Maybe reprinting ABUR duals wont drop their price... who knows? What we can assume is that the reserve list being done away with will destroy WotC's credibility, and make it less likely that people will want to get into Eternal formats, for fear of losing investments.

Most Modern decks aren't even close to most Legacy ones in price. The only ones that are close are the ones that use Goyf and Liliana - but those two cards are also in Legacy. Fetches also increase the price for them, and again, they share the cards with Legacy. Also, every player knows that, at this point, Modern is not really an eternal format - WotC treats it like a very slowly rotating format - so you know that getting into it. I play Modern and Legacy, and I perfectly satisfied with the format rotating and cards fluctuating.
Did you buy your ABUR duals at current market value or have you held on to some over time/invested in them at lower value knowing that they couldn't be reprinted and would only go up? I don't get the point of this question. Are you trying to make people feel bad for buying low? Because that's what it sounds like you are doing... I could be missing your point.
My point is that if you bought low you aren't losing anything from a reprint dropping the price of something back closer to the price you purchased them at. I happen to have bought my wastelands at $10. Am I losing money due to the reprint? Only if I was planning on selling them at their previously inflated price. I have lost nothing from the reprint while those who haven't been playing the game for 16 years have much to gain from it. The same can be said for most cards on the reserved list. The only ones who stand to lose a lot are those who are hording large quantities of reserved cards which is what has driven them to their current market price. The bubble would have burst long ago without the reserved list basically rewarding this activity.
The only ones who stand to lose a lot are those who are hording large quantities of reserved cards which is what has driven them to their current market price.
Not true. The people who bought in at current (or at least recent) prices also stand to lose a lot.
For me, this is my biggest disappointment with Magic. People have taken the Game out of Trading Card Game. You might as well just call it a Collector Card Market instead; too many people have made hoard purchases, driven up the price of cards (helped along by the Reserve List and WotC poor Reprint Policy), and now only the truly rich can afford to play with the best cards.
WotC has stated in the past that they print lots of jank cards with every new set, letting the community figure out the gems from the duds. When all these collectors go crazy and buy all the gems, that only leaves the duds for the rest of us. It's very uncool.
Sure, sure, you could just print out the cards you want, stick 'em in front of some random land if you wanted too (we're playing Casual after all), but that makes the game feel... hollow? Incomplete. I enjoy holding and looking at my cards; using cut-outs for anything other than testing just feels cheap and unsatisfying.
The current system WotC uses is inherently flawed. It encourages price gouging, ensures limited availability of key cards, rewards only those who already have money on their side, and fosters a culture of "Them versus Us"; where those who Collect justify and berate those who want to Play for trying to take away their "investment"; fosters a culture of elitism where only those with the best cards are considered in-the-know or Pros; and continues to separate and divide the Magic community.

Eh.
It just makes me sad, really.
If anyone sounds "them verses us..."
Am I not a player, but a collector, because I own multiple playsets of every fetch land? Because I own playsets of Tarmogoy, Lilliana, Snapcaster Mage, etc? Because I own ABUR duals? Does it turn me into an elitist jerk collector rather than a player because I own two playsets of Force of Will? Like... thats how what you are saying comes across. I'm not offended by any means, you are free to whatever opinions you have, but I want to try to understand what you are saying. I am in no way, shape, or form, a millionaire. I am not rich. I play competitively, and I win. I get stuff, trade stuff, have aquired a nice collection over the years... but I play my cards. I currently have both playsets of Force of Will in decks. All of my cards are played. I know so many people just like me.
You talk about dividing the Mtg community, but it seems comments like yours only serve to further the issue. I know a lot of cool guys with great cards who play. It's not as bad as you seem to think it is.
now only the truly rich can afford to play with the best cards.
I don't know any "truly rich" people, but I know many people who could easily sink 10k into Magic if they so desired. They're normal, everyday people with decent jobs. They just prefer to spend their money on houses, cars, children, vacations, smartphones, clothes, skydiving, concerts, mocha latte frappuchinos, sushi, beer, you name it. All it takes to buy into Vintage is having a decent job and living like you don't. And even without a decent job you still have a choice. I basically ate oatmeal and froze my ass off all winter because I'd rather spend money on cards than pizza and heating.
Reduce your lifestyle to that of a destitute bum and you too can afford to play Modern!
Eh, like I said, this is all my opinion. I just don't like the business model; I find it harmful to the overall Casual player base and I'd like WotC to address the inadequacies of the current system. *shrug*
In other news, Eternal Masters is finally out today! Can't wait to get myself some choice cards! Been saving up for months!
Us Canadians prefer "frugal." I think it sounds more adult than thrifty .
Cheers, eh!
I don't think anyone should really care what others do with their time or money. If someone values Magic cards over other comforts then God bless. I don't mean that maliciously or sarcastically or spitefully, I seriously don't care how others choose to spend their money. If owning Magic cards makes you happy then it's no skin off of anyone else's back. How other people value X, Y or Z is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned because you should live your life for yourself. Not in "screw everyone, I only care about me" sense but more from a "let's live our our lives and assign our own value to things." As an an example I don't like to travel, I don't care about owning a very nice car and I don't care to ever own a house when all I want is my condo. I don't drink, don't do drugs, I watch my weight and take care of my health and so basically I don't spend money. I'm not a millionaire, I'm a Systems Analyst, but there's just nothing that I spend money on so if I want to buy magic cards I can. Doesn't make me better or worse than anyone, that's just how I choose to spend some of my excess income. I enjoy playing the game and owning powerful Black cards makes me happy and improves my life more than investment than extra couple hundred bucks every year. I'll do me and I'm more than happy to let others do themselves. This isn't even about what people in this thread have said by the way, I just don't understand why people care about such irrelevant nonsense. If someone is Jewish or a lesbian or spends their money on tattoos or likes scary movies, how does any of that matter in the slightest to anyone else? I don't know why so many people invest so much of their happiness in how others live their lives when it's so much better for everyone involved to not give a crap. It makes no sense to me that some people go to sleep at night angered by the fact that PewDiePie makes a living playing a jester for kids. Who cares? Do people value their happiness so little as to let inconsequential BS affect their well-being? Off all the things that I couldn't care less about right at the top of the list is how other people choose to live their lives.
Now if only I could convince WotC to make more of their product available to a wider audience, that's make me even happier!
I know too many folk who just won't get into Magic because the cost is simply too high. Folk talk about the value of their cards, and I understand that, but I always find it curious that people come into Magic with the expectation that they can sell out their collection or some such if they need to.
At least, in my own experience, I know few people who get into a hobby with the expectation that they could flip a profit out of it. Again though, that's just me. Different people have different experiences and expectations after all - unlike others who have commented on this issue; I have seen mostly the negative impact the RL and RP has on the game. Elitism, price gouging, theft, lying and so on.
Still love the game, still choose to play with my small collection of friends who play. Just wish the game was more open, available to more people. In my experience the primary block on the game is it's cost, helped along in no small part by the RL and RP.
