After reading Older20's post about favorite decks, and seeing a response for Maelstrom Wanderer, which is arguably one of the most fun cards to trigger regardless of outcome, I figure it's time to convert my EDH deck to regular multiplayer. Sure, I've cascaded into 2 mana dorks plenty of times, but I always remember cascading into sweet things like Crater Hellion and Zealous Conscripts or Time Warp and Scourge of the Throne.
It's time to scrap the Primal Surge EDH deck anyway...my play group doesn't even bother with EDH (although i love it) and Maelstrom Wanderer is just sitting all by his/her lonesome.
Here's my call to you. Let's work together to get MW out as quick as possible and abuse his ability and regale the board with tales of times we've chained some killer cards from this sweet sweet Elemental.
Im thinking green ramp, Erratic Portal, Cloudstone Curio. This seems like the perfect use for the playset of Survival of the Fittest that are not being used.
It's time to bring the fun back into my multiplayer! What abusive spells would you throw in? Let's do this. (please and thank you of course!)
My first instinct would be to play something long the lines of this assuming that you're not looking for a MLD deck.
In case the combo isn't clear Anger allows you to "turn 3" (i.e. mana dork + 3 lands in play) an Orcish Lumberjack into a Primeval Titan who can immediately attack. Worst-case scenario you cast another Titan next turn but otherwise you can hopefully jam Sylvan-father or Maelstrom. Wall of Roots is kinda nuts with Survival since it allows you to tutor + bin Squee, Anger and Genesisimmediately because you can just activate it on everyone's turn. The main aspect of my deck is that Anger + Orcish Lumberjack into Primetime/Sylvan-father is straight broken.
Anyways it's just a generic shell and you can obviously mold it to suit your personal needs. The core is something like:
Do you prefer joraga over somberwald sage , Prid? If so, why? The only upside to Joraga is he levels to a 1/2.
Apples to Oranges. I want 5-6 natural one drop accelerators (excluding the Lumberjacks) in my deck period. If you want to add Sages I can get behind that but I would never cut the 1 drops that allow you to curve into said 3 drops on turn 2 to enable turn 3 Titans/Primordials. You put the Treespeaker in your deck to jam it into play on turn 1, level it on turn 2 and immediately tap it to put a Birds, Wall of Roots, Fauna Shaman or Survival into play (or not if you're worried about removal). That's not something that the Sage can do.
I guess the issue for me is that in this shell, it's just a SotF deck and doesn't need Wanderer at all. I could argue that those two copies are really part of an 11-card variant of the shell.
What about a deck that runs the full four copies of the Wanderer and exploits the top of the deck? Using Brainstorm or Top? Maybe some return to hand tricks like Man-o'-war?
Yea, I just spent a few minutes reading that over (and the predecessor).
The mana base is way too expensive, but even diving in a bit further, it seems a bit too oppressive un-interactive for more than one use. A few tweaks of that and combining ideas from Lurking Possibilities could result in a playable deck that might not get shelved after the first time out.

You can add the other 2 Wanderers and B.Storms to the deck that I posted. You're right that the deck is merely a SoTF deck but the OP said that he wanted to use his playset. I don't see what's wrong with using them if that's what he wants to do. I feel like the deck that I posted is fun, fast and powerful to play.
... get MW out as quick as possible and abuse his ability and regale the board with tales of times we've chained some killer cards from this sweet sweet Elemental.
... without using a stupid busted card like SotF and its creature reprint.
Also, if we assume the budget ceiling is 4x Wanderer, 4x SotF is way out of the price range. Maybe another variant isn't as powerful or as fast or fun, but maybe it abuses the Wanderer more or more efficiently. I mean, if you are already playing SotF, what are you hoping to Cascade into that gets the crowd pumped? The same old Sylvan and Prime dudes? Zegana with no counters? Crater Hellion may be dated, but it's still more interesting. I'm not saying you should just post your Wildfire torch and burn shell, but maybe something that is more in-line with the maelstrom itself.
Hey, I'm just adding to the discussion, not trying to make an argument.
Hey, I'm just adding to the discussion, not trying to make an argument.
He said that he already owns the Survivals and wants to play them. They increase the total cost of the deck by $0.00.
The deck that I posted has a lot of ramp and tutors to ensure consistency. Decks like the one that Xyx posted are cooler but it has no ramp or card draw. I feel as though you're too concerned with dream scenarios of B.Storming into a Wanderer who hits a Conq Sphinx and a Crater Hellion but that you're overlooking how hard it is to get to 8 mana. Everyone wants the sweet pay-off but no one wants to work for it. The deck that I posted is a ball of ramp, tutors and fatties that provide more ramp. Once you cast Primetime you can then cast Sylvan-father or Maelstrom within 1-2 turns and using Orcish Lumberjack turn 3 Primetimes is a very real possibility. You're right that my deck is full of garbage but that garbage is needed to bring consistency and speed to a deck that's trying to jam 8 drops. Sitting around for 12 turns waiting to draw 8 lands isn't fun. It doesn't make for cool stories. Playing a deck that routinely casts a MW on turns 5-6 will because I'm going to give him plenty of opportunities to make those sweet value plays. What most people consider to be a "once in a lifetime story" is what I want to make happen every game. That's the difference between my deck and Xyx's. His list is infinitely cooler as none of the cards are do-nothing ramp. That being said pit his against mine and watch as he casts 3 mana 2/2s into my Orcish Lumberjacks enabling turn 3 Titans and see how frequently he gets to cast a MW himself before dying. Obviously I'm not saying that my deck is objectively better because it would win the 1v1 but you can see where I'm going with this right? In order to have fun casting MW you have to actually cast MW. It's an 8 drop and eight is a ****ton of mana.
Take for example the way my deck is supposed to work:
T1: Birds
T2: Survival + Fetch WoR
T3: WoR + Fetch Birds/Lumberjack + cast said 1 drop
T3x: Activate WoR on everyone's turn to bin Squee + Anger and fetch Primetime/Sylvan-father
T4: Cast Lumberjack if needed + Rampy fatty.
T5: MW
T6: MW
T7: MW
T8: MW
That's what a ramp deck is supposed to look like. It's not "draw 8 lands over 12 turns and hope to get there." My deck plays 4x Lumberjack and 3x Titan so that some % of the time you'll just naturally turn 3 Titan and otherwise you can use Survival which all-but ensures T4 hasted Titan/Sylvan. From there MW on 5 is also basically guaranteed. Yes, it's boring. Yes, you'll frequently Cascade into crappy ramp. None of that prevents the deck from being a powerful, fun, consistent way to jam MWs into play on turns 5, 6, 7 and 8.
He said that he already owns the Survivals and wants to play them. They increase the total cost of the deck by $0.00.
Maybe I have a gross misunderstanding of the common use of forum boards. I've never understood threads to be a bi-directional conversation between the OP and whoever wants to discuss that topic with that person -ONLY-. It supports this approach, but it also supports the approach of discussion on the topic, not just answering an interpreted direct question. Saying 'yea, you could use the SotF, but here's another idea' is a completely valid response and should be welcome.
In order to have fun casting MW you have to actually cast MW. It's an 8 drop. EIGHT. Eight is a ****ton of mana.
My budget Commander deck casts Wanderer by turn six 90%+ of the time. Granted, I have immediate access to Wanderer when I want to cast him, but your argument here is that eight mana is a significant undertaking. I say it isn't at all and can be done with cards that don't require sacrifice or ramping out Prime Time in order to get said mana on a consistent basis. Bumping the Treespeakers to four and using cards like Cultivate and Skyshroud Claim also get the job done consistently and by turn five. For example:
Maybe the tutor isn't the best alternative. Maybe your list wins the 1v1, but I think both are viable in a multiplayer setting. Again, I'm adding to the discussion, not making an argument.
I was mostly concerned with trying to help the OP build a deck as opposed to proposing a generic list.
I play Wanderer a lot in EDH and pre-Vancouver it was a turn 3.5 deck. Slowed down a bit with the new mulligan rules but turn 6 is slow. Turn 5 should be the absolute latest in which you get your first cast but realistically if it's not coming down on turn 4 in the overwhelming majority (i.e. ~80%) of your games then you're probably playing way too greedy of a build.. If you want some suggestions you could shoot your list my way because it sounds like you're missing a lot of key ramp.
First let me say thank you to everyone for posting thoughts and ideas.
Second, I appreciate Prids deck build suggestions based off SotF. I also realize that not everyone is as lucky to have a playset. That being said, I encourage alternate deck archetypes that may be a bit more budget or have a whole new take (like cascade 2.0). Everyone knows that Prid is going to suggest ramp if green and fatties are put together, let's not fault a poster for preaching what is arguably a winning strategy. I never thought of the orcish lumberjack build and probably never would have unless it's been suggested.
Let's not argue over what's not attainable for everyone or what should/shouldn't be posted to a thread (last time i checked, MW was NOT budget friendly at all!). I would love to see alternative deck lists! More over, I would love to know which big fellas are invited to your cascade party! That's the fun of this idea!
My only issue is the most effective way to re-cast my 1 and only Maelstrom Wanderer. thinking about adding a copy or two of Man-o'-war and removing the Portals. Thoughts?

There isn't a single deck in existence that wants 2x Sol Ring but not the full 4.
You're criminally underestimating Orcish Lumberjack if you don't include at least 1 as a tutor target. The card is bonkers in Survival ramp decks. It's many orders of magnitude more powerful than the Sage.
Your manabase is bizarre. Your 3 color ramp deck has 22 lands total 5 of which may as well be blanks since they either do nothing, can't be played or don't tap for colored mana on turn 1. Lotus Vale is horrifically unplayable in a vacuum. If your deck has graveyard recursion or Terravores or Balance or whatever then it makes some sense but as a generic playable it's actively bad. Than Quarry is my my least favorite 5 color land in the game and I think that running it in a creature-based ramp deck is suicide. At that point mass removal not only nukes your pseudo-lands but your actual ones as well. Not a fan. 2x Temple of the False God makes no sense to me. I get that Primetime can fetch them but you're playing a 3 color deck yet you have all of these terrible, conditional, slow, colorless lands. I don't get it. Temples, Vales, KWR, none of them tap for colored and most of them have no value early on. Temples are fine in the games that you cannot possibly lose to begin with (because you cast a Primetime) but what happens when you actually draw one in your opening hand?
Calderstrike
I forgot about Temur Sabertooth he just got an invite. I know what you mean about the Sol Ring but I have opponents playing with full playsets as well as other restricted cards. We just kind of ignore that or build a deck specifically designed to shut it down so they knock it off #passiveagressive
Prid
my play group has a house rule with a take on the Partial Paris draw. We despise when anyone has a terrible draw. Being locked out of the game when time spent together is limited needs to be avoided. In multiplayer we all get 1 free redraw regardless of hand. You also get an additional re-draw if you draw no land or all land. After your free re-draw, you are allowed to partial paris (place any amount of your hand aside and draw that many cards, placing the removed cards at the bottom of the library). If you decide to Partial Paris at any time, you may not re-draw. Thus manipulating my opening hand isn't much of an issue.
I love my lotus vale. It's always come in handy for me. The Steve's manipulate the basic lands, but SotF ends up letting me fetch Primetime and there's your land base manipulation. If you have a better idea, im all ears. I suppose I can replace an island with my single sulfer falls and a forest with Temple of Mystery. I know Thran Quarry is sub par, but i have a playset and I usually only need mana color manipulation for a turn or two. I don't have any Forbidden orchard or Reflecting Pool. I'd rather spend my money on another Tooth and Nail or finally get a Coalition Relic or two. I will give the orc an invite to my party, but only because you recommend him. I'll toss his a** if he ruins my party ;)!
You should still play with 4x Sol Ring and move them across all your decks. There's absolutely no reason to omit them and they're not terribly expensive. Given that you can literally play 4 in 100% of your decks both now and in the future it seems like a no-brainer investment to me.
I would just rather see normal lands than things like Vale, Temples, Quarry, etc. Stuff that reliably taps for colored mana early on.
It would be nice if they weren't all $25.00+ cards :<.
This is exactly why I like Brainstorm in this deck. Especially, when combined with another form of card draw so that you can put the cards in your hand, back on top of your library so you can cast them for 'no cost'.

I mean B.Storm + Fetchlands are great in basically every Blue deck and the shell that I posted had more than enough extra slots to supports them.

The issue for me is that this sort of statement frequently comes across as this: 'Don't play Brainstorm unless you are playing a combo deck and have shuffle effects.'
In a cascade deck (or miracle), you don't need shuffle effects to make Brainstorm awesome. The point should come across as 'Brainstorm is awesome for fixing your draw or putting cards back on the top of your library that you want to cast from there instead of your hand; fetch lands give added benefit and you should use them also as budget allows'.
It's time to scrap the Primal Surge EDH deck anyway...my play group doesn't even bother with EDH (although i love it) and Maelstrom Wanderer is just sitting all by his/her lonesome.

Since we are out of EDH here, I want Sylvan Primordial in the mix, maybe 2x. Some other big-splash creatures to plop down at the same time:
- Pathbreaker Ibex
- Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
- Surrak Dragonclaw
- Palinchron
- Peregrine Drake
I like Aether Gale over Devastation Tide since it was printed, but both are good depending on your creature count.I also like to see Prophet of Kruphix in the mix.
If you ran SotF, what what you use to get something out of the creatures you put in the bin?
Eternal Witness or Greenwarden of Murasa?
yes to Prophet of Kruphix
Here's my list of big boys invited to the party
Avenger of Zendikar
Sylvan Primordial
Zealous Conscripts
Consecrated Sphinx
Deadeye Navigator
Hydra Omnivore
Prime Speaker Zegana
Primeval Titan
Progenitor Mimic
Scourge of the Throne
Sun Quan, Lord of Wu
Elderscale Wurm
Palinchron
23x Stuff
Creatures (32)
4x Birds of Paradise
1x Joraga Treespeaker
4x Orcish Lumberjack
4x Wall of Roots
2x Fauna Shaman
1x Courser of Kruphix
1x Eternal Witness
1x Squee, Goblin Nabob
1x Anger
1x Genesis
1x Surrak Dragonclaw
3x Primeval Titan
1x Prime Speaker Zegana

1x Crater Hellion

Cast Maelstrom Wanderer into Tooth and Nail paid the entwine cost to place Scourge of the Throne and Sun Quan, Lord of Wu onto the battlefield and then cascaded into Time Warp! I also had Primeval Titan on the battlefield! It was a sweet sweet party! Following turn I grabbed hydra omnivore with Survival of the Fittest and pounced for a grand total of 47 the 1st turn and 56 the second turn! What a party it was!!!

Temples are fine in the games that you cannot possibly lose to begin with (because you cast a Primetime) but what happens when you actually draw one in your opening hand?
Anger is inexcusable to omit in my opinion. Hasted Primetime, Scourge of the Throne, Pathbreaker Ibex and more makes them ridiculous cards and the interaction with Orcish Lumberjack to turn it into a Dark Ritual is a huge game when you're trying to jam 6-8 drops.

I forgot about Temur Sabertooth he just got an invite. I know what you mean about the Sol Ring but I have opponents playing with full playsets as well as other restricted cards. We just kind of ignore that or build a deck specifically designed to shut it down so they knock it off #passiveagressive

my play group has a house rule with a take on the Partial Paris draw.
I would just rather see normal lands than things like Vale, Temples, Quarry, etc. Stuff that reliably taps for colored mana early on.

It would be nice if they weren't all $25.00+ cards :<.

I mean B.Storm + Fetchlands are great in basically every Blue deck and the shell that I posted had more than enough extra slots to supports them.
