Would you describe The Gitrog Monster as a generically powerful threat? I've been having a hard time getting excited about that card. I'm primarily thinking of it's cube applications and it just doesn't seem that great to me. Maybe it's just because I'm conditioned want as much mana as possible in a multiplayer setting and the land destruction makes me nervous. But I also don't really field many of the cards you listed as pairing well with it so maybe it's not that great for me. Or maybe I need to get better cards in my cube. =P
I haven't been impressed with the card in decks that make no effort to try and abuse it. It's still a reasonable Magic card but it doesn't immediately run away with the game or anything. You really want something like Putrid Imp or Oona's Prowler + a Dredger so that you can immediately mill your entire deck and win with Dread Return or whatever. Either that or generic abuse with cards like Life from the Loam + cycling lands. I don't hate running it out on turn 5 and immediately playing another land and then using his giant body + Phyrexian Arena to dig deeper into my deck for cards like Phyrexian Arena, Greater Good and/or Deathreap Ritual so that I can generate "infinite value" and dig to my bombs such as Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord or The Mimeoplasm or whatever. Once you stick a good draw engine you'll always be able to play 2 lands a turn at which point the thing is bonkers. Still, it usually dies after a circuit or two and if you're not playing any combos with it at all then it's definitely lackluster. Still good but not "game winning" good.
