I just picked up a couple copies of Council's Judgment and wondered what everyone's experience is with it. Even though people can't choose your stuff, how often does the permanent you want get eliminated? In my playgroup there are tinker targets and the occasional ramped-out Eldrazi that only this card can remove but I wouldn't say those cards hit the table every game. Can I expect to get good mileage out of these or should I just play Oblivion Ring or the like?
I'm worried about having to pick the target I know will get votes over the best one for me to win from. If I have board control and someone plays something to stop me, everyone will probably vote for something irrelevant, no?
Unless you're a big fish in a small pond the "people will purposely throw their votes away" concern is bull*****. There has to be massive power-level discrepancies for things like that to happen. The threat that you want to get axed won't always get removed but even when that happens a key card from someone should be taking a trip to the farm. I've never seen this card exile a 1/1 token or whatever. Someone always has something worth removing.
Having played with and against the card in Cube I can safely say that I don't like it because it's not very consistent. I don't think that O-Ring is a very good card in general but it still serves its purpose each and every time. Judgment is cool because it's a spell that doesn't target (i.e. it hits more things and it can't be destroyed) but at the end of the day it's not a 100% guaranteed answer to an annoying threat. Obviously if there's exactly Emrakul in play then it'll die but if you're just trying to remove a card that you care about there's no guarantee that other people won't vote to exile some dumb Dragon or whatever. In that sense you kind of have to use the card on blatantly obvious threats to everyone as opposed to a card that affects you. I've never really seen it exile more than 2 things either because the last people to vote can usually ensure that only 1-2 things gets exiled. Since it rarely works out in their best interest to "Hex" the board you usually just see the one major thing getting axed.
Having said that I doubt that the card has ever performed significantly worse than O-Ring in our games and it's certainly outshined it on a number of occasions. I still wouldn't run this card, mostly because I dislike the political aspect of it, but it hasn't been terrible by any means. The thing about O-Ring it's that it's a very low-risk, low-reward card whereas this one has a moderate amount of risk and a much higher power-ceiling. If you're a strong player who's already winning a solid % of your games you'll probably "feel better" running O-Ring because it always does the same thing and you don't exactly need to get lucky to win to begin with. In that sense I think that this is a better card for newer players or ones with weaker decks because you're not going to suddenly win games by casting O-Rings but you can take the giants down a peg if you're able to cast 3 mana Titanic Ultimatums.
TL;DR Good card for the weaker players at the table, marginal card for the "pros."
Good insight, thanks Prid3. For now I'll go -2 Council's Judgment and +1 Oblivion Ring and +1 Enlightened Tutor since there are other things in the deck worth getting as well. I almost posted the whole list (mono-W aggro with emphasis on Ajani's Pridemate) but I feel like I'm spamming up the forums today.
By the way, there are no eldrazis Oblivion Ring won't remove aswell, or Journey to Nowhere for the eldrazi creatures. Albeit in some cases more temporary.
