Hello all, Bibbo here bringing an idea for an format that could be fun but it is very much in the infancy stages so I'm really just throwing some ideas out here for some feedback. The format is called Toolbox or Pauper's Toolbox. Toolbox is meant for multiplayer but can be played one-on-one.
In Toolbox, you have a normal 60 deck but the difference is you can have any common card in the command zone that is able to be played whenever you have the mana for it (like a commander). The catch is that you cannot have any other cards of that type in your deck. You can choose to have as many tools as there are card types that have commons (no walkers basically). I'm thinking of trying to have no commander tax on the card(s) at first and see how that plays out. This would lead to some interesting/fun games IMO. The reason to play the format is to add some consistency to your deck in a multiplayer setting so you never feel out of the game even when drawing nothing good. Also, to me it's just fun to get to put together some wacky deck that has the combo pieces for all to see or the counterspell of your deck for all to see etc. I like games where there is less hidden information to encourage camaraderie amongst players. I'd love to get some opinions on the format. Is there something that breaks the format that I am unaware of?
Edit: I'm adding a tax on replaying cards because a little consideration I realized you can easily abuse storm to be an always turn one or two kill with Skirk Prospector and Grapshot as tools. With a 1 tax I think it will be okay.
Toolbox Rules:
1. You can choose any common card as a "Tool" to be set aside at the beginning of the game in the command zone. A player may cast his or her tools from the command zone for thier normal costs plus an additional 1 for each previous time it has been cast using this rule.
2. Normal 60 card deck-building rules except that for whatever "Tools" you have in your "Toolbox" you cannot have that card type in your deck. If one your "Tools" is an Artifact Creature you cannot have artifacts or creatures in the 60 card main deck.
