Haphazard is a format that magnifies the aspect of luck in Magic to an absurd degree.
A friend and I came up with this between rounds one day. I forget why we did it, but it was hilarious. I recommend giving it a try at least once if you and your opponent have a good sense of humor.
This works with any type of Magic decks and any number of players. All you need other than cards are a D20 and a D6.
Rules for Haphazard
Each player rolls a D20. The results are those players' starting life totals.
Before the game begins, each player rolls a D6. They reveal that many cards from the top of their deck and put any permanents into play and the rest on the bottom of their decks.
Each player rolls a D6. That is their starting hand size.
Each player rolls a D6. That is how many mulligans they are allowed to take. Mulligans don't cause re-rolls for hand size, and the first mulligan is free.
Each player rolls a D6. That is how many cards per turn they draw during their draw step.
And that's it. It's very simple, very silly, and purely meant to be played for fun. Games will likely end very quickly, especially in the case where one player is drawing 4+ cards per turn. However, if they only started with 2 life, it might not be such an easy victory after all. Have fun!
