This isn't so much variant, rather something to add to multiplayer FFA games. The idea is turn all your game nights into an overarching meta game where players become more powerful with each victory. It also creates a built in political mechanic, the group simply cannot allow any one player to get to far ahead, otherwise that player will just dominate.
This is geared for multiplayer groups that get together on the regular. It turns night of simple FFA Magic into a more expanded meta game.
When a player wins a game, that player earns 1 Reward point. In between games players may cash in their points for the "Rewards". Players may also cash in previously acquired rewards as well.
If a player wins a game and at least one opponent controlled a Scheme deck, the winner earns 3 points.
When a player who controls a Scheme deck wins, that player is the winner of the meta-game session.
The Rewards and their point values are as follows:
Hero and Conspiracy cards 1 point
Oversized Creature or Planeswalker cards 2 points
Vanguard cards 3 points
LOTR, MOM, and ONE Commander Party Faction cards 3 points
LCI Commander Party Faction cards 4 points
Face the Hydra Deck, or similar Challenge Deck 7 points
Planechase Deck 8 points
Archenemy Scheme Deck 9 points
The player with the most points get to use his/her points first.
A player can control any number of rewards. A player may only every control exactly one Deck type.
Oversized creatures and/or planeswalkers a player controls will begin play in the command zone and may be cast from there. If an oversized creature or planeswalker would leave the battlefield for any reason it goes back to it's owner's command zone. Oversized creatures and planeswalkers do accrue the Commander tax.
A player using a Challenge Deck is immune to any negative effects produced by cards from that deck.
When a player kills a Hydra Head, only that player receives the boon.
