This format is fun. It's what a lot of us grew up on. Unfortunately, it's basically four viable decks: U/W CounterPost, ErhnamGeddon, Turbo Stasis, and the boogie man, Necro. R/G Landkill and White Weenie aren't bad either.
I have a couple of 93/94 decks (albeit ones that use Fourth Edition and Revised rather than Beta), but I'm always tempted by Mirage, and not just because of the amazing art. Aggro gets River Boa, Cadaverous Bloom seems like it should be good, and I designed a fun but probably not very competitive creature-based control deck with Daring Apprentice, Nekrataal, and Bone Harvest.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not watching.
My brother and I are building "Magic 95/96" decks this week. Though for our decks all sets between Alpha and Alliances are legal, as well as 4th Edition and the Arena book promos. Been looking for deck lists, but most have all this power and expensive cards neither of us own. I have a random collection of cards from every set, but nothing "big money". I have a Force of Will playset which is my most expensive cards. After that it's pretty normal cards, like alpha Red Elemental Blast, Beta Clone, Hurkyl's Recall from Antiquities, that sort of thing. Low tier cards. I have a bunch of the old staples like Kird Ape, Atog, Juggernaut, Icy Manipulator, etc.
I am excited to play with a lot of the cards I grew up with (I started playing during Revised and The Dark).

@Zer0evil, if you're looking for deck lists not full of P9 and other "over the top" cards, I suggest trying to locate 95/96 Type 2 deck lists.
I have several books from that period which contain great decks:
"Magic the Gathering, the Official Deckbuilder's Guide" by Tim Dedopulos
"Deep Magic, Advanced Strategies..." by Charles Wolfe and George Baxter
"The Tables of Magic" by George Baxter
"Mastering Magic Cards" by Larry W. Smith and George Baxter

I'll look inmto those books. This format seems sweet
I would definitely make a necro deck in this format. It looks like this format includes most of the cards from the original competitive necro decks like Order of the Ebon Hand, Black Knight, and Drain Life.
If I played this I'd be tempted to try to recreate the deck I played in that era, it was UB control with Sorceress Queen, Royal Assassin, Sengir Vampire, Icy Manipulator, counterspells, removal... I don't remember too much what with it being 20 years ago in my mid teens.
It's very similar to a deck I used to play back in the days (although I would have Sedge Troll and Fireblast)... I believe Ivory Tower was restricted before Necro was legal (because of land tax and Ivory Tower combo) Necro and Ivory Tower is insane.
Sorry I've just noticed Ivory Tower is on your restricted list...
I don't get it either; I voted that both of those are fine cards but apparently others felt otherwise. I think that they will eventually come off the list, though I don't see it mattering much. Hymn is already legal, so maybe people felt that Stupor was too much with that, but Flash I can't even speculate what anyone sees in it. There aren't really any good creatures to flash in.
lol... I would expect Hymn restricted (or banned) a million times before stupor. Actually Hymn was banned because of Black Summer.
Flash ??? (now I got myself looking at all the creature in 95/96) Maybe Lord of Tresserhorn?
We didn't want any bannings at all past ante cards. I was always of the mindset of "less restriction more positive play". When assembling our playgroup I wanted to form it from the ground up. This meant reevaluating the restricted list. We formed a core committee to assess the sets. With the inclusion of Mirage the committee was put to its first test.
Stupor is powerful. Hymn might be more powerful but I feel that hymn is more "iconic" for the period and that had weight on my decision to leave it unrestricted. My vote was simply one of five though.

How is Stupor "powerful" or Hymn only "might be more"? Stupor is an underpowered version of Hymn. Did you mean Mind Twist?
I guess the issue is having BOTH Hymn and Stupor available for Necro decks. That never happened since Hymn was banned before Stupor was printed (I believe).
It is super cheap though. Surprisingly so.

What is going to happen in the Next 100 days!!!
