For those that haven't been active on Twitter or Reddit, there has been a new format in the works with the announcing of Eternal Masters. (https://www.reddit.com/r/mtgeternal)
This is a place to post decks and ideas for the format. In a nutshell, the cards legal in the format are all cards legal in legacy minus the reserved list. That means no dual lands, city of traiters, or any other card on this list.
Why create this format?
For years, many of us wanted to play with iconic cards in Magic without wanting to spend $2500 on just a mana base. Wizards tried to offset this with the creation of Modern, but keeping the format balanced, engaging, and "un-busted" has been proven to be much harder than anticipated. Due to the reprint policy for reserved listed cards, it's tough to play legacy without breaking the bank. So a new format was created - "Heritage" or "Eternal" as you may, a format with some of the most iconic cards in Magic's history, without the "busted-ness" of Modern. This is a grass-roots initiative, with some tournaments already being slotted for when Eternal Masters is released.
Last night I got in about 5 or so games with a friend of mine. He alternated between Infect and Elves, I was on Miracles.
As far as I can tell, the only substitutions he made were Duals for Shocks, and Cradles became 2 extra Forests and 2 extra Fetchlands.
I played Joe Lossett Miracles. I decided to cut red entirely for a few reasons. I do not expect blue to be as prominent in Eternal as it is in Legacy. Delver decks being forced to run Shock lands seems like a big hit to their effectiveness, especially with how good Burn looks on paper. Because Delver seemed a lot worse, the red blasts would just have had fewer targets in a blind meta. The maindeck Tundras became Hallowed Fountains, the maindeck Volcanic Island became a Prairie Stream, and the red blast became a 4th Swords to Plowshares. Miracles likes to fetch basics anyways, and having a Prairie Stream to fetch without taking damage could be good in theory. He had 6 red cards in the board, which became 2x Blue Elemental Blast, 1x extra Rest in Peace, 2x Path to Exile, and 1x Kataki.
The games played out nearly idendtical to how they do in Legacy. Shock lands are irrelevant against Infect. It's about StP, Terminus, and being able to win a counter war if they try to disrupt that. Elves loses some explosiveness without Cradle, which does hurt them, but from the Miracles perspective, it's all about trying to find Terminus while StPing the occasional Symbiote or whatever.
Here's my take on Eternal Elves, let me know what y'all think. I haven't had a chance to test it on Cockatrice yet, so I don't know how polished it is.
