The aim of the deck is to get it's recursion engine(any combination of pieces) online plus KCI and cycle through the deck making enough mana to cast Em. Mana costs spread across the curve for better Scrap antics.
I've come to find that the Retriever just isn't necessary. I feel the spot may be better served by Ethrium Sculpter/Foundry Inspector or some combination of the two.
However, in going that route I just don't feel like 2 copies are enough. That I'll need a minimum of 3. For that I was thinking -1 Trawler for the additional slot. I can't cut stirrings because I need the availability of finding KCI quickly. I also don't really want to put just 3 copies of Sculpter in because it would be too harsh on the current manabase and I don't want to buy additional duals. On top of that, I'd like to keep the artifact curve relatively intact for Scrap Trawler.
My current playgroup can't really help because they're not very experienced with combo decks and, more often than not, they just end up playing mine because I have a large variety.
Any insight y'all have would be very helpful in this decision. Also, if you have questions or comments to the deck itself and it's card choices I'd be happy to answer/receive them.
You're completely correct, the do serve the same means to an end. It was more or less designed that way for a couple reasons. For one, I don't have any tutors and don't wish to buy additional cards after buying Em. It felt bad dropping that kind of money. Also, I've been sitting on those Mishras for awhile now, just waiting for the perfect deck to use them in so once I found it, I'm latching on. Plus, and this part may sound weird, I really like how my decision tree has to change depending on which piece(s) I draw. I feel it keeps me on my toes and keeps the deck fresh and exciting.
I know the stubbornness of my response can be a bit off putting. What can I say, a pet card is a pet card. Lol
As a general rule, I do also believe tutors are a better form of redundancy in a combo deck.
It's funny you mention that because I'm looking at a set of those Cranes right now. I'm just trying to fight this weird corner case where I reveal Em off Crane and can't hold on to it, forcing me to rely on Mishras shuffling effects. However, that's probably the worst possible thing that could happen and I should, in reality, test both ways to see around how many times it negatively affects my gameplan. It is worth noting that Stirrings can also grab lands..
Dockhand is a card that has flown under my radar, I just don't like the activation cost too much. I think if I were going to go the way of Scry, it would likely be Crystal Ball
