So for around a month now my friends and I have been testing a new Commander variant, and for lack of a better name, we named it Commander Royale. The variant combines the ideas of Commander with regular Magic, bringing together 60 card decks and a commander to pilot it. Here are the rules:
RULES
- 60 card deck
- Up to 4 copies of each card (save for basic lands as normal as well as cards like Relentless Rats).
- You play with a Commander. Must be a legendary creature, and your deck can only contain cards represented in the color identity of Commander. *Note* that the Commander isn't considered part of the 60 card deck.
- 15 card sideboard is allowed, although it's a casual format so we are pretty lenient. It's definitely something to consider making due to the high-synergy focused decks.
- 20 Life.
- Commander tax is applied, but due to the 20 life total, Commander damage isn't used. We are considering going up to 30 life to start just to maybe incorporate Commander damage.
I can't imagine this is a new idea; I'm sure others have attempted a format similar to this. So far, we've had a lot of fun playing this variant! It's a interesting mix when you can spec out a deck for a Commander with four copies of your most important cards. I should mention that we haven't come up with a ban list yet, mainly due to the fact none of us have used any cards that seem unfair. I suppose a normal Commander ban list could be applied.

Below are the deck lists that my friends and I have been playing around with to test this format. Some of them are definitely stronger than others, but we haven't really done much to tailor our sideboards.
