I've been fiddling with the idea of building around Villainous Wealth. It just seems like a really fun card with random effects. This is a rough design.
Rather than playing mana dorks, I thought about cards that replace themselves and buy time. Some combination of elvish visonary, wall of blossoms, baleful strix, and coiling oracle.
Since we are running black, I considered dark ritual and culling of the weak. I feel like so far its pretty underrepresented in the deck which is somewhat awkward. These seem weaker though, so I don't really know. Plasm Capture is pretty amazing as a pseudo mana drain.
Beyond that I am really stretching with what the deck should actual be doing. Kora, the Crashing Wave seems to give ramp and an alternate win through krakens. Vrasaka the Unseen is another choice in the colors, but also basically can vindicate. It doesn't hurt both are fairly cheap planeswalkers right now. Maybe even Sylvan Primordial? He seems like he would be a house.
Maybe some amount of search like brainstorm, ponder, or preordain? Perhaps removal like innocent blood or more countermagic? I really don't know where to go from here though.
What's the:
-format? (e.g. 1v1, multiplayer, two-headed, FFA, etc.)
-budget restriction?
-B/R list? (e.g. Vintage, Legacy, none)
-intended use of the card? (e.g. incremental card advantage, degenerate game-ending?)
Those have a big impact on card choices, since there are a ton of diverse ways to build ramp shells (or infinite mana combos) and play BUG value-town.
For ex:
-if no budget restriction, Mana Drain can replace Plasm Capture
-if budget restriction but no B/R, the natural ramp shell is 4 Sol Ring + 4 Mana Vault
-I'd never make a 1v1 deck with 4 Sylvan Primordial, but since you are leaning to high curve cards, that makes me wonder if primarily for multiplayer, which would mean a ton of different cards lower on the curve than for 1v1
If multiplayer, I think it'd be fun to throw in a mana combo and then use Villainous Wealth @ infinity to mill one player to death, then using that player's entire deck to kill every other player at the table. But then that might be considered by "unfun" by someone who just wants to use it as a +5 card advantage spell or whatnot.
Most of the time, I tend to only play 1 vs 1, though occasionally its a small player ffa, often it ends up being effectively archenemy because my decks are considerably stronger than my opponents. I was hoping to try a few more casual decks that aren't so cut throat. I finished legacy Nic Fit through trading online and even though its one of the worst decks in legacy by win percentage, its pretty difficult for my play group to beat it 1 vs 1.
I tend to build decks as fairly budget and see if I like them before buying in. We tend to discourage the use of proxies. Things get fairly out of control if people are playing the best cards in the format in every deck. We run a legacy ban list as well. The vast majority of the cards I see played are before the Urza Block or after about M10.
I was trying to think of something big to ramp into. Maybe Grave or Primal Titan would have been better. They are my usual go to big creatures. With Plasm Capture it seemed really nice to steal some mana. Drain power maybe even.
In general, infinite combos aren't as well appreciated. I guess I don't mind them myself because they reward strong discard and counter magic, but most of the play group finds them to be uninteresting. Mostly they tend to enjoy agro vs agro. I had a discard deck with ensnaring bridges and it gave them a huge fit trying to figure out how to work around it. There's some control decks in our meta, but usually not ones that cut them off completely.
I had dabbled with rest in peace and web of inertia but it was too strong for the play group honestly. I guess we are one of the least advanced metas in existence haha.
