Hello everyone, I thought about this and I wasn't exactly sure where to post it. What I am trying to accomplish is creating a Scavenge deck that may do decently against competitive decks, but I am having a tough time because most examples I can find are built from a Standard card pool, which I don't want to limit myself to.
The deck is actually for my wife, who I started off playing Magic a few weeks ago with the Golgari Intro Pack from RTR. She has been playing around with it while my friend and I play other theme decks to keep the playing field fairly even. Now she wants to branch out and make her deck more competitive against our regular decks.
I also am open to suggestions on where to take the deck in terms of focus. Naturally I think Scavenge is a slower ability to get moving due to associated costs for using it. Slitherhead does break that mold, but I wonder if I should attempt a more aggro approach and ramp mana to be more explosive and aggressive or if I should build to play a laid back more control approach.
Obtaining most cards isn't an issue, so no major limitation there unless they are like, $50-100 eternal staples and the like.
I spent a little time thinking up a core of cards I may want to build around:
Sorry for late replies here. I appreciate the feedback though. I actually had thought about using creatures like Dreadnaught and Death's Shadow but was worried about the implications of having that many cards that intentionally would not see play. However I did some reading on some Legacy builds revolving around this concept with Varolz and I can certainly see the validity now.
The deck will have plenty of "good" cards, removal, enablers, etc. When I referred to eternal staples I wasn't implying that all of them were priced as such...lol. Skullclamp is out, but that is my fault for not initially mentioning that we use the Legacy banned list. Jarad is nice, but Rite is actually appealing too, simply because we don't play multiplayer that much.
Should I abandon all other Scavenge creatures in favor of the Varolz engine, or still use the ones I have listed above?

4x Slitherhead
Are the old Spike creatures worth a look in a deck of this type, specifically Spike Feeder or Spike Weaver?
Vampire Nighthawk and Silhana Ledgewalker with 13 +1/+1 counters is hi-larious. Fauna Shaman becomes a pretty sweet engine, too, because she can search up what you don't have as well as discard Shadows into more Shadows. Toss in Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, and you can kill a whole multiplayer table if need be. Well, I like him more than Rite of Consumption and Fling anyway.
Sig and Avatar drawn by me.
