I decided to make a deck around what many consider the worst mechanic in MTG. The concept is simple: have a creature with banding and trample band with Dream Fighter or Elven Warhounds. Feel free to make suggestions.
This deck is a lot of fun. You should see the look on my opponent's face when he/she gets killed by a Benalish hero. All of the fatties in the world (almost) can block my Noble Elephant banded with my Dream Fighter and they will still take 2 points of damage.
I don't get quite how the Dream Fighter will work for you...is there some stack trick that does something funky...or are you just removing a thread from the field for a moment?

I'm unsure if I'm right, but I think that since they're attacking "together", the Dream Fighter phases out and the blocker phases out, so you got an "unblocked" creature. I guess.

I don't believe this works because Dream Fighter's trigger happens when it's blocked. This means that even if it and the creature that blocks it are phased out, the Fighter (along with the banded creatures) are still considered blocked and won't deal damage to the defending player.

This is correct, but I think the point of the deck is another.
By banding a trampling creature with the dreamfighter.
If the defender is phased out, all of the trampling damage should get through?
I think it should work
If you band a War Elephant with a Dream Fighter, the blockers phase out when they declare they are blocking. Then the War Elephant is blocked but the toughness of the blockers is zero because the blockers phased out. So the 2 points of trample damage go through.
Banding should work like Icatian Skirmishers, Urza's Engine, in other words, they should keep the damage assignment how it is and add a share creature abilities when banded. That wouldn't demand a new mechanic, just a rules changing.
I see banding as a mechanic to provide control over combat phase.
A rough build:
I think this deck is calling for Spitemare. When it bands and is blocked you can make sure that it will receive combat damage but not enough to kill it.
Dear mods, please don't lock this thread. Hagglebaby did try to get permission to necro the thread before he responded. This deck of mine has evolved over the years. I'll post the updated version when I get a chance.

But if I had a Grizzly Bears and Dream Fighter unbanded and stuck a Lure on Dream Fighter, I could just phase out all of opponent's blockers and still deal 2 damage anyway without needing banding or trample.
These creatures seem like they would be much better with Lure (or Tempting Licid) than with Banding and Trample. Otherwise opponent could just choose not to block and negate all that effort you made to force a "Judge!" call.

I gues this is why they got rid of banding
