I've been trying to make a semi-competetive WBG deck around Nethroi, Apex of Death, with a gameplan of self-mill.
Unfortunately I have had very poor luck so far.. and I'm a bit stumped.
Any suggestions?

The "Mike & Trike" combo: Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion. Let Trike ping itself--let it resolve, to avoid shenanigans--then ping your opponent in the face, twice. Trike will die, and Mike will bring it back. Repeat FTW.
Not sure what the best approach is, though... paying 7 mana to mutate Nethroi onto a manadork, or casting it for 5 and them mutating some random Cubwarden/Gemrazer/Migratory Greathorn/Necropanther onto it. I think I'd rather pay the 7, since I'd rather fill my deck with manadorks than mutate critters.

Sounds like a cool idea, although I had hoped to try and make historic or pioneer style deck around him. I won't discount commander though, and I didn't realize the potential for combo plays in a commander deck like that.

Some instant way to get Nethroi to your hand from your library or graveyard is probably needed, since you don't want to telegraph what you are about to do next turn, and likely will need all your mana for the mutate.

I know. I'm only suggesting you check out Commander decklists for ideas. If I'm looking for synergies with a legendary creature, chances are someone made a Commander deck with it that's full of synergies.

There are plenty "total power 10 or less" creature combos you can grab that win on the spot. For instance...
Dragons are best creature type
WBRG Best control deck is non-blue Yorion Doom WBRG
Some 0/0 creatures that enter with +1/+1 counters, like Polukranos, Unchained, Grakmaw, Skyclave Ravager, Daghatar the Adamant, etc. as well as small creatures that buff themselves up once on the battlefield, like Faeburrow Elder, Knight of the Reliquary, etc. gets you much more creature power than just 10 of Nethroi. Same for creatures that create tokens upon entering the battlefield, like Harmonious Archon, Armada Wurm or Squad Commander. Include something that gives haste (either venture into red as well, or include Odric, Lunarch Marshal and a hasty creature in the mix, or just go with Mogis's Marauder if you have enough black creatures to pump up devotion) to swing in right away with your reanimated army.
