I am in a very casual group and usually play between 3-5 players at a time, total free for all. I am just getting back into Magic from a 20 year hiatus and I am looking for some deck options that would help control the table. I don't have a ton of experience with Blue and almost all my recent decks are white, black, or green.
I would love some card options, combos, or deck ideas to get me playing with Blue and maybe Red to play a more control style of game instead of the aggro I typically play.
The group is highly varied and we see all sorts of decks, but there is very little control to the group because they all assume it's impossible with so many people and threats.
What sort of decks do your friends play? My friends are pretty casual and when I'm up against "goblin deck" and "zombie deck" it's absolutely possible to play control and win.
I think a lot of people hear "control" and think of a blue/x deck playing a lot of counterspells. But in multiplayer it can be really about having cards that answer many threats at once. I think of innocent blood and tragic arrogance as staple MP control cards that can blunt aggressive strategies and make way for a late game win. If your friends are playing a lot of "fair" decks then you probably have a lot of options for viable control decks.
If, on the other hand, you're playing against a lot of competitive, combo-oriented decks that do demand those 1-for-1 instant speed answers like counterspell then it can be much more difficult.
The decks vary quite a bit. Landfall, goblins, fling, merfolk, mill, discard, etc. I would say each person brings 8-10 decks with them each night and they all have about 20 total decks each. I personally have 6 decks that I have put together since joining the group. I have never player multiplayer before joining them and I think its a blast.
This is what is so difficult about it. Board control is very difficult with more than 3 other opponents. We can limit the board with only allowing one spell per turn or the like.
Also, how do i disrupt landfall?

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Or just countering stuff?
There are of course all kinds of Counterspell variants that give you things in return like treasure tokens.
And Desertion is still a card.
But you’ll probably need some kind of board position to defend, and possibly attack. And that’s a hard balancing act.
Oh. And Spell Burst and Forbid might help.
My meta: 3 or 4 player free for all, anything goes but boring games or broken decks cause a vote to end that game.
