Let's Break Storm Cauldron Storm Cauldron is a bad card.
[-]It's too expensive
[-]Doesn't really do anything the turn that it's cast
[-]Is vulnerable to removal
[-]Has way too symmetrical an effect to be useful on it's own
Let's make a deck where it's good.
Background:
A few months ago, I posted a thread on this board looking for help with a landfall deck I was building for my friend. In the thread someone mentioned pairing the landfall mechanic with the hilariously bad Alliance rare, Storm Cauldron. While I didn't think the artifact would be great in that deck, the suggestion made me think about ways that I could use it like, Burgeoning.
I've not tested it yet, but based on how Burgeoning plays in other decks I've seen and built, I think the green enchantment could make Storm Cauldron great again...or for the first time...Look, I wasn't playing the card first came out and I've only ever seen it played like twice to mixed results. At any rate, Burgeoning is a busted cards and Storm Cauldron ensures that its owner always gets value out of it.
Obviously Landfall is a great mechanic to use with Storm Cauldron, but why play good cards like Avenger of Zendikar? (Seriously though, I'm just trying to diversify my deck-building array.)
I've never used any of the Retreats, but Retreat to Hagra might actually be decent this deck. The drain ability not only helps keep us alive, but also acts as a win condition. Still, it may be too cute.
The rest of the deck is suited out to find our pieces and stay alive in the process. Cards like Crush of Tentacles help us stay alive and have synergy with Storm Cauldron, while also having synergy with our value creatures, like Coiling Oracle. Propaganda seems useful since the majority of the decks in my meta are creature based and it can deter early attackers while having synergy with Storm Cauldron later.
Disclaimer: This is an untested mess intended to promote conversation. Also, the lands were just thrown in as placeholders until I can figure out the mana base.
Plus, maybe something to bounce those Sowers?
And while we’re at it, Zuran Orbs to make those stolen lands pull double duty? Rampaging Baloths love land drops. Could you fit a few?

In magic there's Harry Dresden, Fizban, Sethra Lavode, Dorotea Senjak and me...
My meta: 3 or 4 player free for all, anything goes but boring games or broken decks cause a vote to end that game.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your suggestions,
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how cards like the Excavator or Zuran Orb would really help since having lands to play isn't necessarily a problem once Storm Cauldron hits the field.
Upon further consideration, Sower may not be the best choice for this deck since Storm Cauldron returns the lands from their deck back to their hand if I'm not mistaken. At any rate, Upheaval, Whelming Wave, and Crush of Tentacles all bounce it which is incredibly strong. Hostage Taker would be a strong choice, but I'll probably have to wait until Ixalan rotates to get them.
Rampaging Baloths is definitely a card, but he's already featured in my Green Landfall deck. They're not expensive, and he may work his way into this one, but for the time being, I want to try to diversify the cards I play too avoid any of my decks from feeling too similar.
As I said, a tough one... so the suggestions were thin, I know.
The Z. Orbs were mostly suggested for the Sowers and not having those lands return to their owners hands.
If you drop the Sowers the Z. Orbs are expendable as well.
I had BG as my favourite for years. These days my favourite switches between 5 color and mono black...

Please tell me what you think. I love the idea of making this a truly vicious deck if I can since the star card is so bad.
Uhm... would Ramunap Excavators help?
Plus, maybe something to bounce those Sowers?

A deck built around Excavator paired with fetches like, Evolving Wilds and Titania, Protector of Argoth would work though. Throw in The Gitrog Monster, Tortured Existence, and Veilborn Ghoul and you have a nice engine, but that's an entirely different deck. (Have I mentioned that Golgari has become my favorite color pairing?)
Upon further consideration, Sower may not be the best choice for this deck since Storm Cauldron returns the lands from their deck back to their hand if I'm not mistaken.
