Hey everyone. With the artifact thread going on, I decided to update my artifact deck to incorporate the new Metalwork Colossus to smash some face. I'm keeping it strictly Tron Lands. I have Cloudposts in another deck.
Any suggestions for the early game? It seems weak if I'm not able to get tron online right away, but that's why I've added the mana rocks to help speed things up, especially with MC. A single Crucible of Worlds would be sweet to keep using Inventors' Fair as a repeatable tutor every turn, but I don't think that card will ever decrease in price. I like the Hedron Archive for the card draw, but would it be easier to replace with something quicker such as Mind Stone? I know Ugin, the Spirit Dragon isn't an artifact, but he's just too legit not to omit. Are there better lands that I should be using for utility? Otherwise slamming a free 10/10 and wiping the board every turn via Nevinyrral's Disk & Darksteel Forge is pretty OP if no one has an answer.
Deck needs 4x Sanctum of Ugin and ideally 1x Eye of Ugin. It can easily employ Colossus chains in which you cast one, tutor up another and immediately cast it. EoU is similar in the sense that you can routinely tutor up and cast a Colossus immediately.
The deck needs more cards like Ichor Wellspring that it can use to recur your Colossi. It's an extremely relevant synergy that matters almost each and every game.
Nevinyrral's Disk make absolutely no sense in an "Affinity" deck. How could you possibly stand to benefit from nuking all of your Artifacts? Yeah, I see the Forges. How are you reliably getting to 9 mana? It's not as though you have 4x Copper Gnomes and 4x Fabricate to consistently assemble this combo.
Don't run more than 2x Inventor's Fair. Flooding out on them sucks. Sea Gate Wreckage is a fine 1-of but anything beyond that is lackluster at best in my experience.
The second Darksteel Forge is superfluous. Hell, I don't even like the first (and yes, I do know what Copper Gnomes does).
I'd always play the first Ugin's Nexus in this style of deck. It's a "ramp 5" for your Colossi and it's something that you're happy to pitch to recur them. Field at least 1x Spine of Ish Sah for the exact same reason. A "ramp 7" that self-recurs to remove key threats while bringing back your Colossi? Count me in!
Hangarback Walker is a stellar 2 drop in the sense that it scales well, blocks well, resists removal and, again, is fantastic for recurring Colossi. You absolutely must take their self-recursion more seriously and build your deck with that ability in mind. You're going to need it each and every game in order to fight through hate and removal.
1x Rogue's Passage is useful for pushing damage though. 10/10s are big .
Agreed. I've had limited time with Inventors Fair, but so far I don't think it's a 4-of card at all.
-3 Nevinyyral's Disk, +3 All is Dust.
Dust is an exy choice, but the only other one that fits here I can think of is Scourglass, which requires white mana.
Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and updated the deck. I like All is Dust, but I decided to use Oblivion Stone since I can constantly recur it. I went ahead and took some of the suggestions from Prid3. Would something like this suffice? Ideally Rogue's Passage may be swapped out for Eye of Ugin someday.
Looking at updating this deck too since it's been awhile. It's been slightly modified to the last list, but that's about it. Is the deck still pretty relevant with Metal Work Colossus? I thought about adding a Mycosynth Golem, but I don't think I have enough creatures to really benefit from it. I thought about throwing in a Platinum Angel in here too as an emergency. I'm still planning on keep the tron lands over Cloudposts.
Ya Paradox Engine is still stupid good. I could probably just shave some of the stuff then to make room for the ramp package. Maybe a Planar Bridge in there too when I can't draw any cards.
I guess it's not technically infinite if I keep comboing Spine of Ish Sah and Trading Post since I have to keep drawing out cards.
The thing about Paradox Engine is that it can sometimes feel hard not to go infinite even if you're not trying to. My version of this deck actually plays Black for Morbid Curiosity because pitching free Metalwork Colossuses to draw 11 cards is BUSTED and the problem is that I usually draw as much of my deck as I want. It's not like I'm even trying to go infinite but it just naturally happens, especially if I'm saccing Ugin's Nexus to draw 5 cards and take an extra turn blah blah blah you get the idea.
FWIW I really like 3x Paradox Engine in addition to 1-2x Inventors' Fair because the card is just too good. I'm even playing double Fair now because I ALWAYS want to have access to an Engine. Hell, I'm even sometimes playing things like Brainspoil or Diabolic Tutor because I literally don't care about any other card in the deck.
Otherwise I'll say that part of Black's appeal is Massacre. This might seem silly but I win a TON of games just by going turn 2 Grim Monolith, turn 3 Paradox Engine + Massacre to clear the board and untap my Monolith. Then you start the Basalt Monolith into Metalwork Colossus chains and before you know it you're jamming turn 4 Morbid Curiositys on 11 drops that you jammed for free on turn 3 in order to (literally) draw your deck.
Even if you don't add Black it's something to consider for anyone else who wants to build this deck. My problem with colorless was always card draw and when I added Morbid Curiosity it just felt like I was cheating. Getting "infinite" mana is easy, that was never the hard part, but finding things to do with it can be problematic at times which is where card draw shines.
Yes, says the owner of the Multiplayer Guide to Artifice, worthy. I've got a playset of Metalwork Colossus waiting to be shenaniganized like this.
I need to update that thing and slap a link to this thread in it.
But I mean this is a "Pride" deck i.e. it's built to compete in my own meta which is basically devoid of aggro and there's very little midrange. I also don't have to impose a budget if it's not something that I'm building for the community so it's not exactly affordable. It's extremely greedy (albeit quite fast) and does very little to disrupt its adversaries.
May sub out Emrakul for Blightsteel Colossus. Should I keep the Oblivion Stone? Kind of an emergency switch for the early game. I know it would destroy my stuff.
If I didn't want to go the Paradox Engine route for this deck, would you say Metalworker would be a viable option? He's fragile, but he can also win games with the significant amount of mana it can create.
I would cut a Sandstone Oracle for a Lightning Greaves or Thousand-Year Elixir if it's an option. Turn 2 Greaves turn 3 Metalworker is basically your nut draw and it's essentially a Sol Ring when you're trying to cast the Colossi. I know that I usually hate on Greaves, I do think that the card is trash 99.99% of the time, but Metalworker is basically the one and only card that can convince me to play with them.
Some would say Disk / O-Stone is a really good reason to add Darksteel Forge to the deck...
... but that's just starting to turn the deck into a singleton combo factory.

Definitely Disk since Disk only destroys itself whereas O-Stone sacs itself.

Another good color is Blue for things like Mystic Remora, Thirst for Knowledge, Manifold Insights, Fabricate, Thoughtcast, etc. Fabricate has gone from trash to treasure in my books and I now consider it to be an utter bomb that's Grim Tutor levels of good. Artifacts are becoming so freaking broken with every new Aetherflux Reservoir, Panharmonicon, Paradox Engine, etc. because they're literally 1-card win conditions that can smash tables to pieces.
