I've had a BW knight deck featuring Haakon, Stromgald Scourge ever since he came out. I haven't updated that deck recently with all the juicy additions lately of Knight Exemplar, Mirran Crusader, & Phyrexian Crusader. One thing I never liked about that deck, while it could go the distance it couldn't punch through for many wins. Lack of large creatures and haste late game really hurt there. So here is a new take on this old deck.
CREATURES:
1 Court Hussar - This is my card draw creature. I will (most likely) never pay the W to keep him around and let him die. With Haakon he is constant digging card advantage machine.
3 Dragonsoul Knight - I added this guy when I made it 5 color. He is a beating. 3 may be a shade too many though.
2 Haakon, Stromgald Scourge - The evil gift that keeps on giving. I love this card. Makes the entire deck come back from the 'yard.
1 Knight Exemplar - A new wonderful addition to the team of knights. Indestructible is so powerful in my meta it isn't funny.
1 Knight of the Reliquary - I wasn't sure about this chick, but then I started looking for some utility lands that could make this cut and started adding them. Now I think I'm glad I added this chick.
3 Mirran Crusader - A powerful beater. Very powerful.
3 Paragon of the Amesha - The long lost brother of the Dragonsoul Knight. I like this guy a lot as well although 3 may be a shade too many.
3 Phyrexian Crusader - Not sure if I want to keep this guy in the final version of this deck or not. Can end games quickly, but don't know if I like the infect.
1 Anger - This is the guy that gives me haste. Me likey.
1 Brawn - This is the guy that gives me trample. Me likey. Me likey even more when I activate the Vault of the Archangel and even more damage gets through.
1 Kinsbaile Cavalier - Double strike on all my creatures? Me likey.
1 Ethersworn AdjudicatorWhat's better that your plain run of the mill 2/2 knight? How about a 4/4 knight! Want more? He flies! More? He has psuedo-vigilance. MORE? He can target assassinate creatures! MORE?!? He can do the same to enchantments! MORE?!?!?! I don't have much else except mine is a foil copy. :D. But seriously I think I'm going to like this guy. He'll definitely be fun with doublestrike.
SPELLS:
1 Nameless Inversion - Do you know how great it is having one of these in the 'yard with Haakon? Hint . . . awesome.
4 Prismatic Omen - So you got this far and wondered how in the hell am I going to cast all these weird creatures with all their weird mana costs? This card helps. Greatly. Also is in here for a little surprise later.
3 Crucible of Worlds - Once I added KotR, I couldn't help myself, but to add this powerhouse. I hate, HATE, sending my lands into the 'yard with no way to recover them. With KotR out I can actually tutor up any utility land every turn or actually ramp every turn. You can't see me right now, but I'm smiling.
4 Buried Alive - 4 copies may be a tad overboard, but I need em. I have to get Haakon in the yard and this helps. Along with getting Brawn in there and Anger and every other knight that wants to party with us.
1 Crib Swap - I love having this card in the 'yard with Haakon. You know how great it is? Hint . . . See above with Nameless Inversion.
2 Last Stand - I love the interaction of this card with Prismatic Omen. This card puts you so far ahead with one casting it isn't funny. You literally dome an opponent for at least 10, nuke a creature for at least 5, put 5 1/1 saprolings in play (at least), gain at least 10 life, and "loot" at least 5 cards. I keep saying at least because that is if you only have 5 lands out. And that last looting ability is awesome because like 89% of the deck can be cast from the yard or reused at least.
LANDS:
1 Cabal Coffers - When every land is a swamp you get lots of B from this.
1 Crystal Quarry - My backup to activating the twin brother knights up there in case I'm missing my Omen.
1 Desolate Lighthouse - I figured some looting couldn't be bad.
1 Evolving Wilds - Land searching/filtering can't be bad. Even better with a Crucible of Worlds.
1 Grim Backwoods - Kind of expensive for its ability and may not stay in the deck. I thought it could be useful for spot exiling effects on my Haakon though.
1 Nephalia Drownyard - I only want to hit myself with this once I have my pieces in place. Thus it may not stay in this deck.
1 Vault of the Archangel - I think this card will be a lot of fun and do a lot of work in this deck.
17 City of Brass - Okay, so this deck isn't going to have that many Brass Cities, but there are a lot of ways to make a 5 color deck so easy to play it isn't funny. Vivid lands/Reflecting Pools. The above Prismatic Omen. KotR/Crucible of Worlds/Evolving Wilds. Thawing Glaciers. Chromatic Lantern. You get the idea.
Honorable Mentions:
Sword of X and Y: I really thought about adding some swords to this deck and still may. Convince me one way or the other. If I do take out the Phyrexian Crusaders I could see myself adding in Sword of Vengeance, Sword of Fire and Ice, and Sword of Feast and Famine. Wrath of God: I know I know, I have the indestructible ladyknight and it is funny to have her out and then cast a Wrath of God. But with Nameless Inversion and Crib Swap, I don't need to. Mirror Entity: If I added some guys like Hero of Bladehold and his ilk I may consider this dude, but until then . . .
What are your guys thoughts on this monstrosity of a deck? I'm excited to play and tweak this thing so lets see what you guys think.
I'm not much of a ruls expert... but I don't think Evolving Wilds works in your deck. You're lacking basic lands. And I think Prismatic Omen effects only the lands in play... not 100% tho...
I think the 17 City of Brass act as a placeholder for basic lands.
This is a fun looking deck, but it looks to be quite dependant on a few cards, mainly Haakon and Prismatic Omen. Prismatic Omen is great for the deck, but it seems you might have some trouble without it otherwise, especially with all of the colorless lands you are running. I realize you're running a tutor package with knight of the reliquary but are all of those colorless lands really necessary for the deck to function? Personally, I would ditch the Last stands and a couple of the Prismatic Omens and focus on making my manabase more independent of Prismatic Omen in order to function. You could still keep a few utility lands to tutor up with KoTR. Maybe Desolate Lighthouse, so you have a tutorable discard outlet incase you end up drawing Haakon.
Here's a few other small tips/things that I noticed:
I agree with Mooncrow on Life from the Loam over Crucible, especially since dredge can help get Haakon into the graveyard faster.
I would also consider changing your knight numbers around a bit. For example, Dragonsoul Knight and Paragon of the Amesha are underwhelming in the early game in my opinion. They're only good if you activate their abilities, but they are a huge mana sink and are just asking to be removed/destroyed, which can really hurt your tempo. I would consider cutting these guys to 2 or 1 of each for the late game once you've got Haakon out.
Brawn doesn't make much sense to me since you don't have alot of big beefy guys. I would personally rather run Wonder to give all of my knights evasion
Knight of Exemplar should be at least a two of. If you can get both of the knights on the battlefield, then they can give each other indestructibility. Seems pretty good to me.
Cut out Phyrexian Crusader, it doesn't really make sense in this deck as others have pointed out.
Finally, consider packing in more removal. Yes, Nameless Inversion and Crib Swap are recurrable with Haakon, but what if you don't have Haakon? Furthermore, I'm not seeing any way to tutor up these spells in your deck. With only 1 copy of each in your deck I don't see you getting the opportunity to play with these cards often. Consider bumping up their count.
May I have your reasoning? Not that I'm disagreeing, I have both options sitting in my binder doing nothing. My problem with Loam is dredging my Buried Alives or Last Stands or Prismatic Omens into my 'yard. They are the few cards I can't recur. Buried Alive I'm not so worried about, but Last Stand is such a house along with the Omen that I don't want to dredge 'em.

See above, but thanks for the concern!
And I think Prismatic Omen effects only the lands in play... not 100% tho...
Is this a concern of your because you think I'm trying to fetch lands with my Evolving Wilds? Because your right! Kind of. Yes, Prismatic Omen only effects lands in play, but I will have basics in my deck to fetch with the Wilds. Thanks!
This is a fun looking deck, but it looks to be quite dependant on a few cards, mainly Haakon and Prismatic Omen.
Thanks! Hopefully it is fun. The deck is quite dependant on Haakon, but in my earlier version I never had any trouble with drawing/discarding him or Burying him Alive. I've never run this list with the Prismatic Omen package so I definitely see your concern. I don't have to do the Omen package because I can do a lot of different options with the manabase, but I love me some Last Stand action with those Omens in play.

Probably not. Backwoods, Drownyard, and probably the Vault could all possibly be cut. You said yourself how reliant I am on something like Prismatic Omen so I think Crystal Quarry should definitely stay. I could see Cabal Coffers being cut since it will only be good with an active Omen. Desolate Lighthouse I think should definitely stay along with Evolving Wilds (if I run basics). I even thought about adding Slayer's Stronghold, but it seems slightly meh. Any other fantastic utility lands I'm missing? (Besides Maze of Ith).
Personally, I would ditch the Last stands and a couple of the Prismatic Omens and focus on making my manabase more independent of Prismatic Omen in order to function.
WHAT!? :D. Have you ever cast a Last Stand with a Prismatic Omen in play and like 7 lands? Don't just say unless you really have. It is awesome! But I could drop the 3 Phyrexian Crusaders for something like 3 Chromatic Lanterns.
You could still keep a few utility lands to tutor up with KoTR. Maybe Desolate Lighthouse, so you have a tutorable discard outlet incase you end up drawing Haakon.
Agreed. Any other utility lands worth mentioning?
I agree with Mooncrow on Life from the Loam over Crucible, especially since dredge can help get Haakon into the graveyard faster.
Since you said yourself how dependent I am on Prismatic Omen and its like what happens when I dredge em? Not arguing, asking.

I think I agree. Any knights you would suggest to replace them with? More singletons for the tutor package or go with more consistency?
Brawn doesn't make much sense to me since you don't have alot of big beefy guys. I would personally rather run Wonder to give all of my knights evasion.
Excellent point! Thanks! Doing it now!
Knight of Exemplar should be at least a two of. If you can get both of the knights on the battlefield, then they can give each other indestructibility. Seems pretty good to me.
Since I'm tinkering with the numbers I think I could squeeze in a second one.
Cut out Phyrexian Crusader, it doesn't really make sense in this deck as others have pointed out.
You, me and everyone else I think agrees.

My meta is so wrath heavy I really don't need to pack too much of my own removal. But thanks for the thought and input. I don't have any Entomb or else I would probably throw one in here for the very reason you mentioned.
5 color haakon powered deck...ambitious but chromatic lantern is an awesome enabler.
I'm currently running a B/W haakon deck. I've run into the same problem when it comes to punching through late game. My current version is Here. Let me know how effective your prismatic version turns out!

I'd rather stab myself in the neck with a #2 pencil before I spent $15 on a piece of cardstock.
Haakon Inverted is a surprisingly resilient combo, really. The only thing that ever stopped me with it was a well-timed Bojuka Bog from across the board (and that is about the only 'yard hate in my meta).
About the only other issue I can see here is that you're very light on in artifact and enchantment removal (only Ethersworn Adjudicator for enchantments, no artifact removal). Is that going to be a problem for you? Something like Portcullis would do you some damage as it stands.

Buried Alive I'm not so worried about, but Last Stand is such a house along with the Omen that I don't want to dredge 'em.
Basically, I find that the long term gains from LftL outweigh the occasional missed explosive play. And LftL tends to be less vulnerable to disruption - in my meta, even without dredging it back LftL will do more work than Crucible - the odds of Crucible sticking around for 3 turns is pretty darn close to zero. Again, that depends on the meta, of course.
In general, I think that a Haakon deck's strength tends to lie in its resilience and virtual card advantage. I would look for end game reach that plays into that plan, like Cadaverous_Bl00m's Urborg + Crusading Knight combo.
About the only other issue I can see here is that you're very light on in artifact and enchantment removal (only Ethersworn Adjudicator for enchantments, no artifact removal). Is that going to be a problem for you? Something like Portcullis would do you some damage as it stands.
Yah I thought about adding in a couple lowly Shatterstorms or the like.
Yah I thought about adding in a couple lowly Shatterstorms or the like.
Nah, you've got a fair bit of white, and the only artifact or enchantment you're rocking is the Adjudicator (who can just come back with Haakon anyway).... methinks you want Fracturing Gust.

Nah, I don't want to blow up my Prismatic Omens.
Some additions and thoughts:
I cut the Phyrexian Crusaders and added some Swords of X & Y.
I added Crusading Knight and Urborg and I gotta say it is stupidly powerful. To the point I may only keep him in as a single and never tutor for him or remove him from the deck completely. He wrecks face so hard it isn't funny.
Since I added Urborg, I removed Wonder and added Filth. Now my knights are unblockable.
I'm currently rocking Crucibles over Loams much to the chagrin of the forums I'm sure, but I just like the way the Crucibles play so much better. I added in a singleton Buried Ruin to constantly recur either my Crucibles or my equipment.
I added a singleton Burgeoning simply for the fun of getting that out along with a Crucible of Worlds in play and an Evolving Wilds in the 'yard. I can then search up a basic land every turn.
The deck definitely doesn't fold if I don't have Prismatic Omen, but it does slow down. I may add in a few Chromatic Lanterns.
I also added in a couple more tutors. Demonic Tutor & Entomb I'm looking at you.
If anyone is interested I'll post the updated decklist.
