I've been a casual player of Magic for years in the past, I recently picked it up again with my friends.
My alltime favourite deck was a mono black discard themed deck which I built from scrath with no knowledge whatsoever.
Given that I love this deck I decided to upgrade it:
I want it to be a discard deck with madness elements to it, and I want my win conditions to be damage from Nyxathid and Trespasser il-Vec...
Here it is as of now:
Mind you we just play casual so no card restrictions or bans.
My aim was to prevent the opponent to play threats by making him discard and having some control on his hand and library and remove what I can from the battlefield, all while attacking him with the 2 aformentioned creatures.
The problems are 2:
1: sometime I just draw only lands and as such I lose or none at all and as such I can't play.
2: aggro jumps to my throat rendering me powerless.
I am open to criticism and any suggestions, even if you think I would be better off changing everything from colors to strategies (while still obviously maintaining the deck's intent), I'd love to have your opinion on the matter!
Have a good day.
I'm not sure that the two creatures you listed go particularly well together. If you could choose yourself with Nyxathid I could get behind this, but the discard outlet isn't all that effective. I put some card upgrades below, and also a list of cards built around the madness theme to hopefully give you some ideas.
Cuts: Undertaker - Tortured Existence is probably better in this slot. Undertaker is good though. The Rack - This is an additional win condition and you don't have much of an ability to zero out an opponent's hand size in this deck right now. Lets focus on using your creatures to kill and replace this with some more control. Sadistic Sacrament - Unless your opponent is playing combo this isn't a great card. Normally cards in library aren't a big threat, and trading a card from your hand for a card in their library is not a good trade. Distress - This is worse than Hymn to Tourach or Wrench Mind. Trading one for one on cards in had is fine at 1 cmc, but at 2 cmc you need to end up up a card. Psychotic Episode does this because it's a madness card, and in theory you are getting additional value out of it. Also, Psychotic Episode can be cast at the opponent's draw step after they've drawn for the turn before they can play lands or sorcery speed spells. Distress can't do either of these things. Brain Gorgers - The draw back on this one is too hefty. If you play against tokens, elves, or goblins, this card is useless.
Thanks for the reply!
I can understand removing Trespasser il-Vec and Undertaker (altough Tortured Existence makes me only discard creatures).
I already found myself against goblins and saw that Brain Gorgers becomes useless.
I was thinking that I should maybe go full control:
That leaves 6 spots to find a discard engine for myself that I can use in opponent turn to Psychotic Episode his top-deck and only card and to maybe find some other form of removal/mass removal: for this one it can't be Biting Rain because only half of my friends decks would be affected, the mono-W creatures are tough, as are mono-G and BW Orzhov and BG Golgari ones...
Or perhaps just plain more discard, I'm not against adding a playset of Augur of Skulls too.
Or maybe I need more drawing potential, that could also be the case.
