Hey all. I used to play magic a lot about 20 years ago back with 3rd,4th edition and ice age. Just recently got back into it because I just found out a buddy of mine used to play during the same years and we both still had our cards. I’ve recently bought an hour of devastation fat pack and have had fun making a couple new decks.
Anyways my friend has an assassin deck and it pisses me off because he always beats me with it. Can anyone recommend a good deck to counter this and keep it around $20? Thanks!!
It would help immensely, if you could provide a deck list of your friend's deck, or at least list the core pieces that you want dealt with. Lists of your own decks would also be nice, since often it is enough to simply streamline your own deck so that it functions better.
He has 4 royal assassins which are the main guys that get me. He has several cards that return them from the grave, icy manipulators and some cards that force me to attack.
I was thinking maybe a similar deck that has assassins and destroy target creature spells. Would this be effective? Kinda like beating him at his own game.
There are a lot of answers. For example, you could play all hexproof creatures. If your opponent's whole win condition involves targeting your creatures, this invalidates it entirely.
Does Hexproof prevent my creatures from being killed by royal assassins?
Since coming back to magic there are a million new things I’m trying to learn.
It prevents them from being targeted by them. Hexproof means, that the permanent or player with the ability cannot be the target of spells and abilities controlled by an opponent.
White has Oblivion Ring, Banishing Light, Journey to Nowhere and several other such enchantments that exile the target, so they deal with the permanent and prevent ressurection. White also has lots of exiling sorceries and instants, and even if you don't want to buy Path to Exile, you can get Unmake and a whole slew of others for cheap.
Blue has auras that keep the enchanted creature from untapping in its controller's untap step, some even tap the creature when they come into play. Examples are Malfunction, Claustrophobia, etc. Also, counterspells.
Black can kill the Assassins with spot removal like Murder, Dismember, Echoing Decay and LOTS of others. Killing 1/1s is easy for black. And exiling cards from the graveyard is just as easy. Night of Souls' Betrayal would kill them right after they enter the battlefield, reanimated or played normally.
Green can make the Assassins fight with its own creatures to kill them (Prey Upon, Pit Fight, Savage Punch, etc.). And like black, it can clear a graveyard.
Many artifacts, like Relic of Progenitus can clear out a graveyard, or single cards from them. And even if the cards don't go to exile (like with Junktroller or Reito Lantern) they ae gone for a while, possibly for the rest of the game.
You could run Asceticism- it grants Hexproof to all your creatures, and provides Regeneration. Royal Assassin doesn't prohibits the overlooked "regeneration" ability.

alternatively, you can run Mortuary or Haunted Crossroads with Primitive Etchings. "Oh, you killed my creature. Okay, i'll just get it back next turn..."
