Im helping my dad build his dinosaur deck and trying to make it as good as can be but still be budget so no carnage tyrants. Theres no ban list or format restrictions only requirement is that the cards be reasonably priced. Im trying to spend 20-30$ upgrading it. He already has a lot of the dinosaurs though notably only 2 ripjaw raptor and no deathgorge scavenger. I have a couple ideas on how to up grade it but im not sure wich is best or if theres a better way.
My dad said he felt like the aggro approach was most effective so ill start with that.
One idea I have was to run it as gruul aggro deck that runs dinosaurs in the 3 drop slot. It would run wild nactl and burning tree-emissary. Along side the traditional dino cards. Im thinking of running a cascade spell at the top of the curve. Either bloodbraid elf or Bitumonous blast. The elf would make it so i could splash white to make nactl even better and let him play sunwing. Also a bit faster. However blast lets the deck cascade into 4 drops and is easier on my wallet. Though Im unsure if the blast would actually be better than charging monstrosaur in this case since thered already be plenty of card advantage from 4 ripjaw raptors and the blast is just a really over priced removal spell.
The other idea is to do an aggro plan that uses more white. This would let the deck runsiegehorn ceratops and the white one drops. Could still benefit from wild nactl. Though id take out burning tree. Mana is a bit awkward because it wants three colors and is an aggro deck. The unclaimed territories should help. It helps that he already owns most of the cards for this version so i may be able to fit some cheap duals in the budget though that would be a nonbo with nactl so id take her out.
Theres the jund dinosaur deck on strictly better mtg combining death touch from Status // Statue and the pinger dinosaurs. Seems fun but might be a bit slow and inconsistent. Does nothing turn 1. ramps turn 2. and plays a 4 drop turn 3. But then it also runs tetzimoc wich wants the deck to leave mana open while the deck wants to curve out. Im not sure if theres a way to improve the deck with cards outside of standard because its very different from the decks i play so dont really know cards for it.
Theres going all in on ramp. Or finding a way to cheat out gishath to play a bunch of the big dinosaurs as well.
anyways whats the best way to build dinosaurs on a budget. Those were the ideas i had for it.
Could try ramp with some veteran explorer's and Reckless Abandon's. I'm not sure that the bloodbraid is a great idea. The card is amazing, but it seems like the sort of thing that makes you ask why you're running tribal when you could have four bloodbraids and removal.
I figure if your game plan is a hasty creature that drops dinos directly from top of library into play, that meets the threshold of "my big mana is bigger than your big mana." Honestly I didn't really consider Rile (it's kinda expensive for what it does). I was just thinking of low damage wipes and Reckless Abandon.
You don't need Pyrohemia. Just run 1 Polyraptor + 4 Forerunner of the Empire. Forerunner tutors for the Polyraptor (i.e. you don't need to run multiples of an 8 drop). Then it automatically triggers to leave you with 8 Polyraptors and Sweltering Suns the board, at which point you probably win unless they have a board wipe. Pyrohemia requires you to draw both cards naturally, and it also takes more mana to activate after casting an 8-mana creature.
If there's no banlist or format restrictions, the first thing any big ramp deck wants is Sol Ring ($2-3 only for one of the best cards ever printed). Vintage B/R list means you can run 1. No B/R list means you can run 4!
no Pygmy Allosaurus or Old Fogey? that's just disappointing... I remember back in the day, the few dinosaurs were erratta'd to "Lizards"... i wonder if they changed it back.
in all seriousness, Shivan Raptor are pretty good early game until you can set up Forerunners.

Forerunner means you can also run other cool 1-ofs like Burning Sun's Avatar, Ghalta, Primal Hunger, Regal Behemoth, etc...
