Counterspell's original art just screams old-school Dungeons and Dragons to me. It's very much the style of illustrations you see in the old Mystara campaign setting manuals.

Yeah, I agree. I miss the old styling of MTG cards. It's not that I dislike the digital photorealistic style that has been dominating MTG since Alara, but there's been a lack of that high fantasy feeling.
Especially when they had D&D artists working on the card arts, like DiTerlizzi and Ron Spencer.

I agree on everything you said. I especially like that older sets had a large range of art styles - it helped make each card feel like a unique person, place, or thing.

There was a discussion in a Paul Cheon webcast about counterspell art. And the conclusion seemed to be that the Tempest counterspell artwork was the least favourite. I found that very odd, as I actually really like that one. But then it struck me that this might have something to do with me starting to play around that time. Tempest art wast the most common one. Maybe I just preferred it because this is the artwork that got me to know the card?

This is probably the last piece needed to make UG Madness viable in pauper. The rest of the deck has been downgraded, but without the 6/6 worm your creatures are smaller than the gurmag anglers and Gearseeker Serpent. It would help to put green back on top of the big creature hierarchy and would work well in both madness and tron.

It's supposed to seem like a better Phyrexian Arena on a stick, but any token madness or lifegain decks won't care. Also, 3 life to a 20 life start is more meaningful than 3 life to a 40 starting point in EDH where it could potentially fill a niche.
Biggest downside of this guy is that he only has 3 toughness, which means he dies to bolt and a number of basic red sweepers. Surprisingly fragile.

Did you notice that both Shatter and Floral Spuzzem put the card at the center of the action, not its controller? Foreshadowing the way we refer to Gideon and Liliana as "he" or "she" on some of their cards?
Perhaps not, but it's still cool.

Huh, I've probably read the text for Shatter 1000 times and never noticed that. The 5/17/17 random card of the day is Eye of Singularity. If you have any comments, combos or a decklist involving this card, feel free to share.

This is actually the card that springs to my mind when thinking about how to stop planeswalkers from activating a loyalty ability right away. This always triggers for every single permanent that enters the battlefield, so even if there is no other planeswalker with that name around, there's still a trigger on the stack, which enables you to Bolt it before the opponent can make any use of it.
in regards to the old art style, I miss the good day of Richard Kane Furgeson and DiTerlizzi, and the humor that Phil Foglio brought to his art

Yeah, these guys can be a bit nutty with the right kind of deck. If you're running a casual deck that is +1/+1 focused, it's not difficult to get these guys insanely huge.
