On the upside, atleast it doesn't have Islandhome. That damn ability made so many blue-beefs unplayable, or just really expensive walls.

As far as I can remember, it was the first blue ground fatty that didn't have Islandhome or require sacrificing lands (Sea Serpent, Leviathan, Polar Kraken, Marjhan), so that was a big deal for casual magic at the time.

It's fun to look at how Magic's wording on abilities have evolved. Look at the original Giant Spider. It's not until 4th Edition that they removed the "does not fly." I don't know when, but Reach didn't become mainstay until Canopy Spider in 10th Ed.

The Reach keyword was introduced, like so many others, in Future Sight with Thornweald Archer.
It's funny - this is a futureshift but would be a very normal card nowadays.
Yeah, it's almost like we are living in that future. And it is a normal card now: Thornweald Archer. I still feel quite the excitement whenever one of those cards gets repr... printed in a new set. There have been quite a few over the years.
Speaking of Futuresight cards being "reprinted" I've actually pulled a Steamflogger Boss from Unstable. It was fun with all the "contraption conspiracy" talks back then... now, contraptions are an Un- gimmick.

The 12/24/18 random card of the day is Karplusan Forest. If you have any comments, combos or a decklist involving this card, feel free to share.
I remember these cards. Man, I thought they AWFUL at the time. So did everyone else. We all thought it was right up there with Sorrow's Path in absolute garbage. Only the Homeland filters were considered to be worse and that was debatable.
After surviving Black Summer and years of leveraging my life to my potential detriment to win games, I began looking at these cards in a much different light. They're definitely not a bad choice, especially with the incredible number of recurring life gain cards introduced since then.
A cool classic and awesome cycle of lands and able to be picked up for old school land feels without forking out for a dual land. Better than City of Brass in my opinion because of the colorless option once your colors fixed.
Back in those days, dual lands were the only variety producing lands. By the time Ice Age rolled around, duals had been reprinted and WotC wanted to shift the power scale. Painland had been reprinted several times, but not the Depletion lands. The HomelandsFilter-lands were horrible.

Mesmeric Orb + Fatestitcher/Basalt Monolith + no stupid "time wasting" rules
or Elvish Visionary with Cloudstone Curio, Intruder Alarm and Symbiotic Deployment with Laboratory Maniac... add in Aluren and Recycle and a bunch of Inspire and well, the deck almost builds itself.
