i am getting into FNM slowly but surely, but mainly i play casually with my one friend who runs a rakdos deck and a golgari deck and i like to play my U/R Izzet deck with lots of spells and he usually smashes me. the U/R deck isnt that great yet though.. the only deck that i can for sure beat him is my main W/G selesnya token raper deck that i put my most time into.
i am just looking for other types and color combinition decks that go good against those two OR just a description of what good decks go against what and what colors go well against what colors
i am still learning all the terms of MtG like control decks and all that, that is the other thing that still confuses me..
R/G and R/B often go well together were as W/U and B/U go together. These are classic "Allied Colors"
I've never went to an FNM so I can't really comment much on that. One thing is for sure you'll have to find some clues about what decks are most popular in your area and then try and build something that has answers to as much of the playing field as you can. You can also build something that no one else wants to use and play the "rouge" deck.
The question is what strategies do they employ? Rakdos seems aggro.
'
Yes that is the question and is there a post or site that is a glossary of sorts for all of these words like aggro and curve and and mid game and all of that? some of it is common sense but others i dont understand like control and all of that... so what styles are what decks and if there is some god thread forum post that it explains it all i can just read that :P... thanks for the help!!!
can you list your red/blue deck? I have a red/blue deck and play casually with a few friends and it has about 80% win rate, and I only spent like 15$ on it past the intro pack
is the deck. it's probably not that amazing overall but it's really fun to use. you can throw quicksilver dagger in there for some stupid fun card draw with gelectrode+curiosity.
another option would be removing some of the creatures such as kiln fiend and wee dragonauts if you notice them never landing damage and just replacing them with more spells maybe Incinerate for damage, CounterspellCrippling ChillBlustersquallVapor Snag type cards for control/tempo, or Dual Casting + more Gelectrodes if you enjoy the enchant side of the deck and your opponents don't have creature/enchantment removal as a theme in theirs.
when end game hits dominus of fealty is basically your catch-all. as long as your opponent has one crazy permanent out that is the reason you're in a bad spot or losing or whatever, dominus of fealty can solve your problem. steal the card and use it for your own advantage whether it's a creature or a dominating enchantment/artifact. The Hypersonic Dragon is a nice card I guess, 4/4 fliers usually never hurt, and the sorcery effect doesn't hurt either, but if you wanted to replace this with another card (2nd dominus of fealty?) that would be fine. I love the mercurial chemister, he's always a joy to have on my side of the board and usually is the main driving force behind the long game win.
it's a pretty fun deck once you get it rolling. card draw keeps the cheap spells coming and all your creatures either help your spells or get buffed when you play them. it can be altered a lot of different ways but i'm still interested to see what you're running as of now.
hmm I will try to help you out with the terms I guess.
Aggro: A deck style that trys to kill an opponent as fast as possible an aggro deck will kill an opponent turn 4 if an opponent doesn't stop them. Aggro decks tend not to have any cards with mana costs greater than 4.
Mid range: These decks tend to focus on winning with 4, 5 and 6 mana cost creatures. To do this the decks tend to have a mixture of cards to interact with their opponents (kill spells, counters and discard) and Ramp cards (get more mana). Their creatures tend to have powerful enter the battlefield effects or activated abilities this is because a creature can be killed for less mana than it cost the mid range player unlike the aggro player.
Ramp: The goal of the deck is to get a large mana advantage on an opponent and play a card that is very powerful and will win the game in very few turns.
Control: The goal of a control deck is to prevent an opponent playing out their game plan. All the while gaining more cards (through card draw or reuse of cards or destroying two cards of opponents with one card etc.) this is called card advantage. Eventually they leave an opponent unable to stop them playing a powerful creature and beating them to death. Older forms of control would Mill (force the opponent to lose due to not having any more cards in their library).
Tempo: the opposite of Control kinda, play something powerful early in the game then prevent your opponent messing with your game plan. beat them to death.
Combo: a deck they trying to find a specific couple of cards that together win the game.
The curve has got to do with the mana cost of your cards... when a deck "curves out" they play a 1 mana cost creature and 2 mana cost creature and a 3 mana cost creature in successive turns.
Ok back to your question. Thragtusk beats rakdos. centaur healer is also good. Basically life gain and big blockers will stop them. Mid Range and fast enough combo decks tend to be best against aggro. Control and aggro are actually fairly well matched but it depends on the actual decks. good draws from the aggro deck and control cannot stop them, but if the draw is a little lacking control will easily win.
Golgari is grindier and will attempt to grow and reuse their creatures.
but I am not sure what kind of Golgari you are talking about because they can still be an aggro deck but not as agressive as R/B closer to mid range I guess. If the deck is slower then Control will do well as will Tempo particularly if +1/+1 counters are involved.
can you list your red/blue deck? I have a red/blue deck and play casually with a few friends and it has about 80% win rate, and I only spent like 15$ on it past the intro pack

just got home from FNM and im exhausted, will post deck tomorrow!!
Narvuntien--- Thanks that did help!!
i absolutely SLAUGHTERED that [.deck] [./deck] format thing ahahah
i'll repost when i get back from my meeting, sorry guys!!
ok here is my U/R deck... the east coast is getting bombed with bad weather i hope my electricity will last long enough for this post...
this deck does fairly well against the people i play, which as of right now are only rakdos and golgari decks... its really fun to play though so i dont care if i lose..
well thats my deck justcallmewhat hope you like it, please give me some feedback!!
i like all my blast to player/creature spells to knock people down fast and all my counter spells,, i never realized how awesome essence backlash is if you are fighting strong ceatures.. i like guttersnipe to do that extra damage, and gelectrode to possibly get untapped to do more damage each turn....
my goal is to quickly blast people down with spells and creature abilities, all in all though its a fun deck..
oh yeah... sideboard... heres a quick sideboard i just threw together...
i really really really love mark of eviction to just screw with people its awesome !! that inaction injunction and vacuumelt is kinda for control to maybe keep me alive a bit longer? i dont know i havent put too much time into my sideboard, or deck really either..
and i wish i had another nivmagus elemental those seem pretty cool..
If you're playing against creature heavy decks (rakdos and golgari pretty much have to be this kind), then don't use dispel. Use Remove Soul or Essence Scatter instead. Those give you better proactive spells to keep nasties like Rakdos or some other efficient creature from being able to harm you. Against golgari, Dissipate will be better than those spells because it permanently removes Jarad or a scavenger. Aside from Tormod's Crypt or Grafdigger's Cage , I can't think of any cards to exile cards in the graveyard. Find stuff like that in red/blue (or an artifact). That way you can remove his scavenge cards if that's what keeps killing you.

Haven't played anything but EDH and casual for over a year
looks pretty cool, I'd probably take the guildmages out but that's just me. also you should keep looking for improvements to your spells. preordain, ponder, imo should be 4 of one of those it just helps so much especially for izzet. some of your burns could be more efficient and yeah just be careful having too many creatures so that you never draw spells because having a bunch of guttersnipes/gelectrodes/fiends out is great but if you just emptied your hand and you're top decking creatures/lands each turn and REALLY need spells you'll wish you had more ponders/lightningbolts in there
I think chandra the spell copying one might be better than jace in terms of non-ultimate just for copying all your spells. jace is sick though (I sold mine hehe)
also izzet charm is good but I really don't find it winning me games.
ok cool thanks for the advice, Chandra, the Firebrand looks way better for my plan of the deck than jace. i think i may order like two of those.
and that is a good point about the creatures sometimes i find myself asking... do it have to many creatures? and yes the top decking creatures and lands has happened before... but usually i'm ok.
Preordain or Ponder look good to me. i'm going to look around and get some of those for my deck. 4/4 actually.
i do have multiple Telling Time . should i use those in my deck until i can get Ponder or Preordain ? and if so what do you think i should replace for them?
thanks for the help What and it sucks having to play on a budget but thats life.
It doesn't advance the winning plan much, but if you want a defensive deck to blow out other people with spells, Hover Barrier and Aether Membrane are tough for other rakdos and golgari to break through. Membrane being especially nice since it will get rid of +1/+1 counters. If they have no trample, you could also just Fog Bank, but that is easier to kill with burn.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
i do have some Fog Bank too i forgot about those... thanks for reminding me!!
i remember when i first started playing i didnt know the difference between combat damage and spell damage and i thought that card was just completely immune to everything i was so excited....
milling is fun, but for the golgari decks i play its kinda dumb to do its just basically giving them a looking pick of what they want to make their creatures stronger with...
and to cavalier i am going to get some of those cards thanks for pointing them out, as of right now i dont have any of those though....
ponder lets you dig deeper but I like preordain's choices a lot better. and I don't know if I would run what you linked because it's 2 mana and is pretty strict. what if you pull 3 bad cards? or 3 good ones? no options you just have to hope you need one of them this turn, one next turn, and one not at all.
Lightning Bolt is a MUST HAVE for this deck. You are you using burn (burn is cards that deal direct damage to creatures and players) as a way to kill stuff and win the game, and Lightning Bolt is the BEST burn spell ever printed. For one mana you can shoot down almost any creature dropped duing the fist four turns and it can easily deal enough damage just to win right then and there. Replace them with the Annihilating Fires you have in there, because they are just better versions of them.
I will definitely get some lightning bolts... Sounds great
I have been getting my ass kicked lately I think the deck is lacking cheap creatures that can get out faster and deal dmg and defend. My friend plays aggro style and I can't keep up. So I'm working on remodeling all my decks
I am also looking into triple colored deck ideas and mono colored deck ideas. I want to make a w/b/g deck and a mono colored white angel deck or even a w/b angel demon deck.
Advice for helping with those decks and facing aggro r/b g/b and b/u decks would be cool too!!! Thanks
I have a couple 60 card aggro decks. I mainly play edh because ppl just don't play 60 around here.
Anyway I run a R/B Rats and Burn. It's also a bit controling. using 4 ravenous rats and 4 Gnat misers, and 4 hellhole rats (hell hole rats makes them discard and deals damage equal to the converted mana of the card). making your opponents discard. 4 crypt rats which you can pay x black mana and it deals X damage to all creatures and players.
I run 4 lightning bolts, mizzium mortals. 4 call to the netherworld. This allows resurrection for 1 mana or no mana if it was discarded. A few various destruction spells. A 2 drop destroy target creature or planeswalker.
Two marrow gnawers giving all your rats fear ( can only be blocked by other creatures that share a color or are artifacts ) it also has an amazing token generation ability
Over all a really cheap deck just fun to use every now and again
i am just looking for other types and color combinition decks that go good against those two OR just a description of what good decks go against what and what colors go well against what colors
i am still learning all the terms of MtG like control decks and all that, that is the other thing that still confuses me..

you could also go more of a creature theme and throw in some Clout of the Dominus, more Wee Dragonauts and other creature support spells like Reckless Charge Teleportal

For U/R you can either play Tempo, Delver of secrets guttersnipe etc.
Or you can play control. Niv Mizzet dracogenious
planeswalkers.
Unfortunately both are going to cost you... Tempo doesn't work as well without Snapcaster mage.
The control deck kind of wants Jace architect of thought and tamiyo.
However you can add other colours to a control deck fairly safely either white Oblivion ring, terminius or Black Sever the bloodline, ultimate price
I hope this helped.

With loads of instants and sorceries, Runechanter's Pike and Delver of Secrets look pretty good down here.
Archaeomancer (Budget) or Snapcaster Mage look like they can fit in here.
I would ditch backlash in favor of Counterspell or Dissipate.
Telling times are good too. Also Think Twice as well.
