I'm just curious how people feel about this - i.e. playing a tamiyo, field researcher deck with cards from EMN/SOI/BFZ/OGW/KLD/AER/AKH/HOU standard? What about for currently-legal decks once they rotate out?
And this is not part of the poll question, but for those who said yes, what about for standard formats that had cards that were later banned? I.e. copycat combo if you only play with cards that were legal at the time that copycat was legal?
If you have a set of friends/players who all tended to have started around certain sets, then I think it would be a great format to build decks back to those releases.
For example a bunch of you might have started with Theros. It would be a great chance to go back through your cards, make use of them, and not feel like you have to throw extra money to build some new decks.
It's possible that you could even do block constructed, although might be too restrictive.
The other thing I've noticed is that ban list are not really needed for this format, as you can only play 1 of a card, so it's hard to abuse them. Normally it's having a bunch of multiple cards that leads to overpowering effects, so I'd see no problem with needing to have bans in past or present sets.
I'd wait and see how the format goes before making a decision on this. My guess is we'll see various permutations of Brawl and I wouldn't begrudge someone for wanting to play Modern of Frontier Brawl. I'd just want everyone to be on the same page.
Got to play against a Tamiyo deck last year ( it was not called Brawl, but was a format some stores where testing out for wizards) and i got to say: they should have oficialized the format before SOI rotated. There was alot of good legendaries and planeswalkers to build around. Saheeli got alot of suport to be UR-Spellslinger , there was a werewolf deck, and i played with Nahiri-control-ish.
For real, i would not say no if WotC propose a Brawl-masters format with its own ban list and being a format with only modern legal cards. But i guess it would require too much work to balance the format.
My guess is that they probably will want to make a "new Modern" eventualy and a brawl format with only cards on it but idk if this will take a while or not. Maybe it is called Sentinels and is BFZ forward.
Ask your play group about it, and try it eventualy.
Personally I want Brawl's card legality to be closer to Extended's. In my opinion cards should be legal in Brawl for at least a year longer than they are in Standard. For example, Ixalan block cards will rotate out of both standard and brawl in late 2019. With what I'm proposing, Ixalan block cards wouldn't rotate out of brawl until late 2020.
I believe that this would help give the format some depth and open up deck building possibilities for players that may not have been available using just ghe standard card pool while still keeping the brawl cardpool somewhat current. Also it would give people somewhere to play their cards once they rotate out of standard, giving players purchases more long term play value then they would have otherwise.
I think "Modern Brawl" seems bad as the degeneracy increases and you also have the possibley problematic ability to run Doubling Season in Gx walkers or run Tezzeret, the Seeker as a commander, but could see "Frontier Brawl" (Khans onward) or even "Gatewatch Brawl" (Magic Origins onward) being much sweeter formats than Standard Brawl.
Personally if my playgroup tests it I may just suggest Gatewatch brawl - it makes Wastes legal for a colorless Commander and generally adds more interesting options. I don't love adding Khans because I worry the format will be too powerful and consistent with Fetchlands and some of the power cards of that era, but the BattleLands would be a nice add.

Yeah, they are even discussing making wastes legal, though I have some reservations. Mostly, what it would do to the price of wastes with things like Karn in brawl. I do kind of wish we had BFZ and Shadows blocks in it, but I agree wholeheartedly on avoiding Khans because of fetchlands. It's actually kind of nice to build decks without worrying about all the classic EDH mana fixing.
Yes, Historic Standard is already a thing and the deckbuilding restrictions would be simple (Pick a commander and build a deck for any Standard where that card was Standard Legal), and it would allow people who don't have so much free time to build a couple decks and have something of a similar power level to play with us even if they don't have the best cards for the current Standard.
I'd really like to play Horde of Notions. I had a budget EDH deck made up of mostly Lorwyn/Shards standard and it was pretty fun. I don't keep up with standard these days, but would be cool to have a brawl deck just to try the format.
