After a very long absence from MTG (stopped at Champions of Kamigawa), I've decided to get back into it.
I've been playing a couple of drafts since I got back into Magic, but have looked at EDH (which I've never played before), which the shop plays on Thursdays. EDH looks like a great format, particularly because I have plenty of singles and not many multiple copies of cards, and because it seems like how it was back in the day for 'Timmy/Johnny' players like myself, with a big focus on cool spells/effects/combos, rather than what the meta dictates.
So I've come up with an Esper Artifacts brew. Other than the general (Sydri, Galvanic Genius) which I bought last week, all the other cards are ones which I own. I went for this deck mainly because of the March of the Machines which I owned and thought there were a couple of cool combos I could leverage.
I want to keep the deck relatively budget (the lack of which is why I stopped primarily playing in the first place, because I couldn't justify spending $500+ AUD on 40 bits of cardboard...). It's a bit of a mish-mash at the moment, and there's a lot of garbage in the deck, but I wanted to see if there were any cheap upgrades I could make, or if a new general would work better, or if I should cut my losses and go through my rares to make a new EDH deck altogether.
I love Sydri. She's incredibly versatile. My deck is lots of fun and plays plenty of advantage, although at present it's a different build to what I'm seeing here. You should be able to make some upgrades for minimal financial outlay.
Mine is very much a midrange build, and that may not be direction you want to go in. I spam the board quickly with artifacts, protect them, interfere with opponents, and make them hurt for trying to bring down my board state. There are some expensive card in there, but the bones of the deck is relatively cheap; even the rares on the list above are mostly under a dollar, and they all make fantastic additions. You can add some huge financial value if you want, but you can still make quite a cheap Sydri deck without that. The biggest things I've found is making sure your manabase is good. It's not so much big mana with Sydri, it's fixing colours. So Orzhov Signet is a must, and if you can afford a Chromatic Lantern or Coalition Relic it will pay dividends.
Hope this helps, happy to dive in and give some more detailed feedback on what you're running presently if needed.
I've actually decided to go a different route and go with Breya through the "Invent Superiority" pre-con and make some choice upgrades with the other cards I own, as having another look at my deck, it's pretty underpowered for EDH.
