This guy, right??! My first iteration of him was mana rocks and mill, it was too reliant on threats worth stealing hitting the graveyard. I considered a self-mill route but it seemed too reminiscent of an old Phenax / lab man build. There is a lot of discussion on the viability of zombie tribal with our new God and I am curious how the "Brains and Drains" diet will feel. I chose a medium size horde, cmc 1-4 (with a few at 5 and 6) curving into Scrabby with the hopes of incremental life loss and sideways zombies FTW!
EDIT! After a bit of soul searching I have disassembled the Horde version of the deck and revised my initial build of "Rocky Mills." I put a few more threats worthy of reanimating from my own yard and hopefully it will make for a more interactive game. The Eldrazi Titans serve as wincons as well as preventing a mill-suicide.

I would add either Leyline of Anticipation or Vedalken Orrery in order to cast The Scarab God at the end of the turn before yours. That way you don't have to wait for it to survive an entire turn in order to use its upkeep ability. Chances are that with a lot of zombies in play, your opponents aren't gonna wanna leave it alone until the following upkeep.

The Leyline and Orrery were both in the list initially but cut to make room for more zombies. I bet I can squeeze em back in. Muddle the MIxture > Leyline of Anticipation The only counter in the deck feels unnatural. It is almost always a Cyclonic rift tutor. Noosegraf Mob > Vedalken Orrery I like the card but it seems too cute.
Well, you don't need to add both; one of them is fine. Remember that, since the main point of them is cast your commander as if it had flash, they're never going to be bad cards to have. Even so, being able to flash in Death Baron in response to chump blocking with zombies is always a great thing. Casting any of those sorceries like instants is also a great thing, too.

Draw shouldn't be much of an issue but the tutor department is a bit lacking, I think a little redundancy for flash should be fine. I would love someDeath Baron shenanigan but I unfortunately do not own that card. I would gladly make the investment if this deck pans out but I am still not convinced this is the final version for me. I am already thinking of a mana rock heavy build again!
And as for Grave Betrayal, I feel that will fit in here just fine! Gonna mull over some cuts and see where I land and update the list soon.
Updated Decklist reflecting current built. Not quite complete overhaul but pretty close. Zombies are fun and have a lot a potential with The Scarab God. I hope the changes made to the deck provide a more interactive game. I have always wanted to use Tombstone Stairwell with Vengeful Dead... I just hope all those hasted zombies my opponents get don't overrun me!
I created a Zombie tribal version of The Scarab God. I really went all in tribal. It's surprisingly good! There are a ton of unique tribal commander cards from the '17 edh deck series from wizard. I added in every zombie lord except for Death Barron. With those, plus some artifacts and enchantments, I have 11 zombie "lord" buffs in the deck. It gets really ridiculous when you animate your 3 cost lords to make them even larger and still buff other zombies. There are also some other amazing artifacts like Herald's HornHeirloom bladeStoneforge Masterwork that give extra value.
You'd be surprised how effective the buffs can be when you run those alongside the zombie token generators. Even if they boardwipe us, we just play out the scarab god and start reanimating the zombies we just put in the 'yard. Once we have the god out with a few followers, we drain opponents at a surprising rate. Not too mention, scrying that deep every turn gives us the answer we need when we need it.
Besides zombies, I just run some value etb creatures like Baleful Strix and Mulldrifter. Having cards that gain flying when you reanimate them is awesome, especially when they are buffed by lords!
If you want, I'll post my list. I don't have an electronic list of cards yet, so it may be a little while before I get that together.
The horde version was a blast to play but ultimately I wanted to have a few more answers to random crap and whenever I end up with extra mana EOT, zombifying something is a plus! I have a habit of dismantling decks after a few weeks but I've enjoyed The Scarab God so much he's made his way to one of my regulars.
