Does anyone remember that abysmal movie Dune back in the 80's? I loved it so much as a kid and I do still have a soft spot for it. The book was FANTASTIC. Anyway, I was thinking Hazezon Tamar could play the Fremen leader as I build an Arrakis-themed deck. Wurms, Fremen with equipment tech, flying machines, desert-themes in cards like Desert Twister. I'll start working a decklist, but if you loved Frank Herbert's book Dune, feel free to chip in some theme cards.
Someone beat me to it on this site by three years, lol (if others weren't before that). Oh well, still going to do my own list and see how it goes.
Edit 2: And as I think about, Vorthos-wise, Hazezon is more like Stilgar than Paul Atreides. Yasova Dragonclaw is more like Paul Atreides with his mind-controlling voice except he has the wrong colors. But, if I am Paul Atreides, it takes the deck in a whole different direction. Will post thoughts on legends that fill the main character spots, though as a teaser Dosan the Falling Leaf is Thufir Hawatt (which totally fills the role of a Mentat changing the conditions of engagement.)
I really love Dune and this deck is a sweet representation of it. There are a ton of choices for Chani. Much bae.
Have you thought about vehicles? Skysovereign for the space guild transports? Cultivator's caravan can be a spice miner, And good ol Gurney wouldn't be caught dead without a Smuggler's copter.
There was a Children of dune mini series too, I recall. I'll think about Child of alarm theme deck...mostly so Cabal Patriarch can fit the role of our sublime emperor.

Thank you! Glad to hear someone's enjoying it. You read my mind about Skysovereign and other vehicles. I've been working this steadily offline for the last couple of days. This is so much more flavorful of an idea to do now that Kaladesh block is out. The tech was vastly given short-shrift, yet Dune was still a tech-heavy world concept. That's ultimately why I chose Jor Kadeen for Gurney Halleck, since he would use the machines at his disposal to augment his troops. Seems very much like a Caladan battle-mind. Hadn't thought of Cultivator's caravan as a spice harvester, per se, but that's a great idea...I was trying to come up with something for that. This is clearly going to be a wonky casual deck, unlike the competitive decks that the guy in the link of my first post came up with. But as it tightens up, it should expose some things that I can use to put the hurt on someone. Card draw is going to be key to this keeping up, so I have a lot more to do to add card draw. I can't just rely on equipment to buff my creatures and call that card advantage. The nice thing is that the wurms are plentiful, so there will be lots of late-game steam...just gotta keep from getting rolled to then. So ramp is also going to be a key mechanic.
One last thing you mentioned about having others in the deck. I kind of cut the list off from enemy factions because it would get too diluted (and really, why would they ever fight together anyway?) So no Feyd, Baron Harkonnen, Emperor Shaddam IV, etc. The deck is literally the heroes fighting the enemy (my opponents are Harkonnens, Imperials, Ix technocrats, Guild agents, etc).

Totally fair, maybe have that be a separate deck something BR or BRW seems fitting for House Harkonnen. I like Tariel as a representation of Baron Harkonnen, if only she were more horizontally endowed. lol Marchesa, particuarly QM fits the archetype of the Shaddam regime, but no particular character comes to mind.
I think if any deck wants to play with a kwisatz haderach you'd want something like Jace, right? I dunno, blue seems like the color to find kwisatz haderach.
Yeah, Jace is probably a good choice. Blue really is the key for him...too bad. There's really no reason to play Hazezon, other than as a Dune commander, which then kills blue. I am liking how this deck is shaping up, though. My friends also have some of the more expensive cards, so I'll be able to trade for those and save major $$$ in new purchases.
Hazezon is a good commander regardless. He doesn't give all the colors we'd like (House Atredies seems like a Bant affiliation), but nothing says "Dune" quite like an army of Sand Warriors popping up out of the ground. The Fremen are crafty, hardy, and savage. Hazezon embodies every precious drop of that flavor.
I'm glad you're enjoying the deck build and good on your friends for helping out where they can. Keep it up and have fun!
Oh yeah, I've already decided to build it since the flavor is working out so well. I only have to cut about ten more cards to fit the lands, so I'm almost ready to post a complete list for people to tear apart. But as the cuts have come (well over sixty cards so far) and I examine what's left, I have had to change out Gurney Haleck's card because there aren't enough artifacts to ensure metalcraft reliably. That being said, there are still a bunch in there. Interestingly, I've backed off of a lot of the mass kill/buff cards to keep flavor in places, but have paid attention to gameplay such that Jihad didn't stay in the list due to limited play benefit. (Well, and it saves me $50, too.)
Finally, it is done, a complete decklist. Boy, was that ever painful making the final 10 cuts down to 64 non-land cards (yes, I know that's too few land cards at 36.) I'm going to playtest before cutting deeper, to test the mana troubles, as well as what works and what doesn't in the cards and then sub for land after that. Anyway, this is the kind of Dune deck I would like to play, and we'll see where it goes from there. Also, I did play fast and loose a bit with the equipment since most of that fantastical stuff wouldn't be on Arrakis, but I had to add some value somewhere to make the deck a bit more viable; the mere fact that there is a quite a bit of hand-to-hand equipment because lazguns and projectile weapons are largely nullified by shielding is what makes it flavorful for Dune, not the equipment itself.
Please, feel free to comment. I'm open to all feedback. Thanks!

Exiled to the Desert (2) - "Go now. Take him to his Desert. To die." 1 Exile 1 Path to Exile
Unlike Damia, this deck held its own decently well in its debut for such a devoted theme. But it was a bit slow, so some minor adjustments to add more ramp, fewer Fremen, a couple less equipment, a couple more removal spells, and finally a new, more powerful Chani. Richard Kane Ferguson really just has such amazing artwork, and Livonya just looks totally sick dual-wielding weapons. Here is the latest decklist. Let me know what you think!

just wanted to say this is the coolest deck i've seen for a long while. loved the dune books to the point where i actually read all of them, if you'll believe it. love the wurm cards, love how desert is in there, and the general is an inspired choice. just one thing: why not mother of runes for the reverend mothers?

Thanks for the kind feedback! Mother of Runes is a brilliant suggestion. I had totally forgot about that card, and that models Bene Gesserit foresight perfectly. In terms of play, also a really nice protection mechanic. Ultimately, I chose the Soul Warden because of the religious tie-in to Fremen religion. But I could take out a card somewhere and add the Mother of Runes. Suggestions like that are why I post. Cheers.
hmmm yeah you could do mother of runes as a Bene Gesserit reverend mother, and soul warden as the Fremen equivalent.
Or just as two aspects of the Fremen reverend mothers and keep the deck theme free of Imperial entanglements. Methinks that is best. Hmmm, now what to take out. Mechanically speaking, Mother of Runes can serve offense and defense protection roles. Think anything with Quietus Spike getting through the lines. Youch!!!
Hmmm, back to the drawing board. My meta is running so many explosive voltron decks that I am getting caught flat-footed consistently. Thinking I might change Commander to Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis to be Paul and Leto of Caladan. Even after Leto dies, Paul keeps fiercely close to his father, often talking to him as if Leto can hear him in the afterlife. Adding blue will give me so many more in-theme options for Paul and Lady Jessica's use of the voice to control their enemies. Probably will update fremen with some mechanics from Amonkhet.
How's that sound? Any suggestions for Dune-themed blue cards you would play?
Edit: Pending input from someone, I'm thinking of starting additions with: Sphinx's Revelation "...spice extends life, spice expands consciousness..." - Princess Irulan Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis (New Commander) "The Sleeper must awaken."
OK, let’s give this one more try. Beefed up on some removal again, streamlined the mana curve, and really tried to increase play value without cutting flavor. Any feedback?

Yes! Finally got a win...well, sort of. I battled through two other players and my hard aswers helped burn through a Selvala player’s trick kills. We both agreed to share a win when we became locked in a standoff. I don’t think he had much removal to take out my Sandwurm Convergence, and even though I did have several ways left to get rid of his hexproof Blazing Archon, I shared the win so we could shuffle up for another game.
I might add some red stealing such as Insurrection to model Paul’s use of the voice, but this was still a significant game in that my recent changes allowed me not to get blown out. Woot.
Edit:
Hmm, maybe amplify Lifegain and massed attacks by:
"GIVE ME SPICE!!!"

I might add some red stealing such as Insurrection to model Paul’s use of the voice, but this was still a significant game in that my recent changes allowed me not to get blown out. Woot.
Edit:
Hmm, maybe amplify Lifegain and massed attacks by:
-1 Hero’s Blade
-1 Sword of Vengeance
-1 Sword of the Paruns
-1 Deathrender
-1 Sword of the Animist (doesn’t really fit theme)
+1 Insurrection (under Muad-dib’s growing powers)
+1 Mob Rule (under Muad-dib’s growing powers)
+1 Pennon Blade (under Hand-to-Hand Combat)
+1 Deploy to the Front (under Fremen)
+1 Warstorm Surge (under Storms of Arrakis)
