I've been playing this deck at my LGS for the last several months and am having a blast. Most of the folks I play against enjoy it as well. It can be played to suit the audience. There are some combo's in here that can be a bit OP when needed, but likewise there are a few interactions that are less 'offensive' to the group.
The deck consists of a bit of stax (smokestack & contamination), but doesn't go overboard. Oblivion Stone, Damnation, Perilous Vault and Black Sun's Zenith provide a decent set of removal for dealing with storm/horde decks or late game situations.
Win conditions are pretty straight forward. The first is the "Horde" method. Cards like Phyrexian Dreadnought make this super easy, especially when you can bring it back with Nim Deathmantle only to re-sac to Gisa by untapping her with Magewright's Stone. In one turn, you can put a minimum of 48 damage on your side! Deal that massive damage via all-out assault and then given an extra punch via Shepherd of Rot. Finish up your turn with Altar of Dementia to have them mill 1/2 of their deck! EPIC turn FTW If you really wanted to hit them hard with mill (coming and going), you could look to make room for Altar of the Brood.
One of my favorite cards in the deck is Coffin Queen and an all star in my mind. She allows you to steal stuff from graveyards and sac to build your army.
While ramp is prevalent in the deck (Magus of the Coffers, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth + Cabal Coffers, Crypt Ghast), one of my favorite recent additions is Sword of the Animist. Anybody else have thoughts on this? I really enjoy the new equipment. It allows for ramp while also thinning out the library. By the way, don't waste that creature if they are going to chump it... Sacrifice it with Gisa to not only get the land, but a minimum of at least 2 more zombies!
Thanks elfric! Completely agree. Explorer's Scope is still good for some things, but definitely not an SotA. Have you ever messed around with Surveyor's Scope?
