Hey guys! When Feldon was first spoiled, I immediately got giddy and jumped around in excitement. That seems really dorky, but whatever. Red has always been my favorite color in Magic, and something about its inherent weaknesses draws me ever closer to it. However, my favorite archetype has always been reanimator, something red doesn't have access to- until now!
Feldon!
I call this a proto-primer because it is not quite a primer, and I don't think I'm allowed to call it a full-on primer just yet. Spare me thine wrath, mods!
Getting to Know Feldon
Feldon comes from the era of the Brothers' War, and is truly a flavor win from a mechanics standpoint. In the story, he attempts to recreate his dead wife as an automaton, but realizes she isn't the same, and removes her power core, placing it by her grave...
But just what does Feldon do?! Feldon of the Third Path
Feldon comes down early, at only 1RR mana, and taps to create a token clone of a creature in your graveyard! This token dies at end of turn, though, so we have to make sure to abuse this as much as possible!
Why play Feldon?
/Pros:
-Reusable
-Aggressively Costed
-Decent booty (avoids some splashy effects)
-Artifact synergy
/Cons:
-Moderately costed tap effect
-Requires setup to do anything
-Unlikely Commander Damage kill
Feldon's Playstyle
Feldon's style, at least as I built it, is a reanimator-toolbox-value engine. Play your looting/wheel effects, mill yourself, etc. to fill your grave with nifty threats to cheat out early and for cheap, or reuse dead threats for greater value! Because it is instant-speed, you can hold off and create your automaton in response to something occurring! Discard/Looting effects are essential to this deck, so it runs many of them. There is also a strong artifact theme going on, in addition to abusing death triggers. The early game can be played out as ramping/looting fatties into the 'yard, and the mid game will see lots of single shot fatties played to remove other players' boards or preventing setup. Late game, Feldon can really pump out the heat, as you can generate significant mana and hard-cast your big threats in addition to saving Feldon for utility.
Feldon could also be played as a Kiki-Jiki wannabe, an infinite combo red deck with Priest of Urabrask, or many other ways! Use your imagination! I just chose this play style as it is my favorite, and I think you will like it too.
Elements you will want to abuse:
-Discard
-Mill
-Recursion
-Death Triggers
-ETB
-Sac Outlets
--Theft Effects (due to Sac Outlets)
Summoner's Egg - perfect for this deck! Cheat big fatties into play, triggers on death. You can hard cast this from your hand and kill it off to a sac outlet, or just create a clone via Feldon!
Sundial of the Infinite - keeps Feldon tokens alive! End your turn with the trigger on the stack, and the trigger will be exiled, netting you a nifty token!
Codex Shredder - played for multiple reasons. The first ability is nice to mill yourself 1 once in a while, but I would not recommend doing this at random. Combines really well with Sensei's Divining Top or, for budget reasons, any other way of scrying your top card. The second ability is what really intrigues me, as you can fetch back your Planeswalkers or Enchantments which can end the game for you. Kind of underwhelming most of the time, honestly, but it doesn't reduce your hand size and the recursion is sorely wanted, so...
Goblin Welder - one of my favorite synergies, you can break a Feldon token for a more permanent artifact! He is also a good Feldon target, as you can swap HIMSELF for any artifact in your graveyard!
Altar of Dementia - so beautiful. Allows you to utilize your Feldon tokens to their maximum potential. Mill yourself for a hefty amount, or mill someone who is close to dying if you want! (I wouldn't choose the latter.) As with all sac outlets, works really well with steal effects.
Sculpting Steel - already a viable card, becomes even more of a beast when you CLONE YOUR FELDON TOKEN!
Myr Battlesphere - originally, I had a token sub theme going on in here, but I took it out, because I figured this deck was more about the big flashy reanimation rather than a swarm theme. Siege-Gang Commander and Purphoros got the axe, but I kept Battlesphere because his triggered ability doesn't cost any extra mana, and the FOUR myr tokens sitting around afterwards are great clamp / ashnod's / helm of possession / anything fodder. Maybe someday I'll return to a swarmy theme, but for now... here there be dragons!
Utvara Hellkite - big bad dragon that makes big bad dragons. This guy alone sticking on the board will end games easily for you, and it only gets worse for them. This deck currently boasts 9 dragons, enough to have a second dragon out with Utvara fairly consistently. You really don't need more than 2 at a time, as the effect is just bonkers. Utvara is the beater of choice for me, because he leaves behind a large token after going in for 6, which can proc it again later if I choose Utvara again. For extra fun, throw in a Warstorm Surge before attacking. (;
Wurmcoil Engine - yeahhhhh, the pet card of the deck. Big fat beats on a big fat wurm. Dies at end of turn, gives you tokens, lots of life gain. Besides being an amazing, relentless beater, he ALSO provides wurm babies to block with or feed to various sac outlets for profit. Yep. Shouldn't really have to explain this one.
Anarchist - this is an obvious recursion choice, but I wanted to take this opportunity to point out why I chose to run this over Charmbreaker Devils. The Devils turn into 8 power off a single sorcery, sure, but it's random, and I don't have that many slots available for non-creature recursion, so I went with Anarchist. That said, I really like the Devils, and would love to squeeze them in if I find my sorcery recursion lacking! The fact that Anarchist doesn't hit instants is fine, because there are only 2 in the deck, and if it's REALLY important to get that Chaos Warp back, there's always Codex Shredder.
Notable Exlusions / Cards that could be great!
Gamble and Sneak Attack - These cards are amazing for this deck! Unfortunately... They are taxing on the wallet, and I haven't chosen to splurge on such cards. If you have them, definitely run them! Their downsides are synergistic with Feldon!
Caged Sun and its ilk - Gauntlet of Power is the only mana-doubler I am currently running, as so far it has been easily accessible and recur-able. Feldon being able to power out large creatures for only 3 has left mana doubling to be less powerful in this deck. However, being able to hard-cast those fatties is always handy! I will probably revisit the number of mana doublers in this deck if necessary.
Grimoire of the Dead - honestly, I haven't tested this out yet, but it seems to be amazing! I will probably try to put this in if I find I don't have enough discard effects. In a more realistic setting, this card will never reanimate all creatures, nobody would let that happen. But you can draw out a removal spell just by filling your yard up!
Bosh, Iron Golem - he would be really fun to throw artifacts at people, but that 4 mana activation cost is pretty inhibitive. I might have to try this out, as doing 14 damage for 7 mana (assuming I copy him from grave) would be pretty neat.
It that Betrays - an extremely solid card, especially given that we are running All is Dust. I originally had him in the list, but he is just a little too brutal and at the end of the day, I don't want to feel bad for winning via annihilator. Some people would probably prefer to run this, and I say to them, go for it!
Heretic's Punishment - self-mill is always kind of nifty. This works wonders when you have a Greater Gargadon on top of your library, but this isn't magic christmasland... it will often hit for ~5. It also doesn't dig nearly as deeply as Mesmeric Orb, which I am currently running in it's stead.
Stalking Vengeance and Vicious Shadows - here are two cards I am intrigued in, but simply can't decide what to remove for them. Shadows is great in that it triggers on ANY creature, and does damage based on cards in hand, but it's an enchantment, and costs 7 at that. We can't cheat it into play, and plopping it down can take up an entire turn in the mid-game. Vengeance I have different problems with - the haste is wasted on it if you're reanimating it via Feldon, the trigger is not nearly as big as you would imagine it is, and unless you already have a board full of big fatties that are getting killed, it just feels out of place. Probably best left to Kresh-like decks.
Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer - originally an auto-include for me, this guy kind of derps around until someone wraths artifacts. I found him to be dead fairly often, but he could work out in different metas! You can also Feldon him out at instant speed and sacrifice himself to protect something that someone is trying to spot remove.
Godo, Bandit Warlord - originally ran him, but I only have 3 targets for him. Although he CAN fetch a skullclamp, I don't think this merits his inclusion in the deck. I replaced him with Anger, and I think the deck is better for it.
Well, that's all for now! I have been heartily inspired to play Feldon, and I hope that some of my inclusions can help you guys out!
Feel free to leave suggestions and responses!
I may have to seriously consider Utvara Hellkite. He seems like a ton of fun. As soon as I can find a copy of Starke of Rath I'm going to add him in (I just ordered a bunch of cards and forgot to put him on the list). I like Anarchist as well. I had considered him previously but my wheels and Altar of Dementia are putting fun sorceries into the graveyard more than I expected and he would be really helpful. I like your list!

I didn't even consider Starke as an option, might have to crib that!
I really like the thought of flashing in a Dictate of the twin gods EOT, then vomiting multiple Dragon Tyrants or [c]onto the field.
Have you considered Anvil of Bogardan? Probably a bit more risky than Mesmeric Orb considering the amount of choice it gives your opponents in card selection, but it can be fantastic in proactively feeding feldon.
Oh and you might want some Twinflame to go with your Dualcaster...
I'm glad to see a bunch of people excited about this guy, he's a very interestingly designed card, and feels formidable. Anybody have games in yet?
I played against a filthy casual elf deck with my original draft list which was extremely cute, and the games went pretty dreadfully. I'm used to the speed of Purphoros or the back-breakingly boring consistency of Patron of the Orochi. I've since removed a lot of the superfluous cuteness for a more tuned list with a higher amount of beatsticks.
I approve of Utvara Hellkite, it's probably the one best creature for Feldon and allows you to take over a game in a very short order of time. Do run Starke of Rath, nothing like a card that says "Here, I blew up your Kozilek, but don't worry, you get to have this tapped 2/2 token that vanishes EoT! You're welcome!"
Anvil of Bogardan is something I forgot for some reason. Now I've gotta find a slot for it. Yes, you may be feeding your foes cards, but you're also packing your graveyard with Dragon Tyrants that you'll be able to send out into the world prematurely.

Hey, thanks for the positive feedback! I really appreciate it!
Utvara was just a pet card from my Scion deck previously, but after seeing the smack-down he's done in testing, I knew he was a keeper. I highly recommend Anarchist, getting to Wheel a second time when you're stuck with only a card in hand is wonderful.

You know, I have Anvil in my Aurelia deck, and I just totally forgot I could put it in here. I'm definitely going to put that one up on the chalkboard. It might have to replace Mesmeric Orb, but only because some decks (Sharuum, Sidisi, Jarad) in my meta benefit more heavily than I do from it!
Thousand-Year Elixir was definitely considered when slapping this together, and I'll keep an eye on it. It would have to take a slot away from either Thornbite Staff (a LOT of untaps) or Illusionist's Bracers (essentially the same effect, but Elixir is more flexible).
I originally considered Dictate, but went with Gratuitous instead because it's one-sided and there are a lot of decks in my meta that run instant speed damage (double the damage Goblin Sharpshooter and Jarad? ugh). I could totally see running a Dictate to keep most of this deck running at Instant speed, however! It's very hard to recover from a double-damage-double-striking-firebreathing-Dragon Tyrant!
Speaking of which, I may have to find room for Dragon Tyrant in here! Should have been an obvious consideration from my old Scion deck. It can take out 1 player fairly well, but it can't do much besides hit someone really hard. I'll keep an eye on it.
Not sure what I would take out for Twinflame. Yes, in testing Feldon can do a lot of work. You can be fairly under-the-radar for a while and politically remove things until you're ready to barrel in with dragons to the face! Most of my testing comes from 1v1, however, and he does really well in that setting also, being able to disrupt the board and hand while setting yourself up. I just proxy Feldon and the other C14 cards and my playgroup doesn't care. (;

Glad you like the Utvara Hellkite! I figure most people will still just be enamored with reanimating Wurmcoil repeatedly. I also used to run a Purphoros list, haha. He could be so brutal!
I just recently found out Starke doesn't work the way you might think he does. Because you control the sacrifice trigger, Starke will never be sacc'd and your opponent will get the token. If you don't mind that, then go for it. Just something to consider (this is also relevant for Humble Defector, if you're considering him).
Do run Starke of Rath, nothing like a card that says "Here, I blew up your Kozilek, but don't worry, you get to have this tapped 2/2 token that vanishes EoT! You're welcome!"
That won't actually work, since it's not an exile but a sacrifice trigger. Since you cannot sacrifice a creature you don't control, your opponent will keep the Starke of Rath token around indefinitely. Can still be worth it, but you need a sacrifice outlet to throw the token into in response to activating its ability.
