Hello everyone! I am a long time Magic player and have played Commander just as long. I ususally stick to two commanders and don’t deviate, which is why I don’t post many lists on these forums. However, when Selvala, Explorer Returned was spoiled, I was running around everywhere trying to figure her out. She perplexed me. She attracted me. She made me confused. She made me mad. She was the conundrum I have always wanted in a Commander and I finally go it in the form of an Elf Scout. Over the course of the couple of weeks when she was spoiled as well as a number of weeks after her release, I think I nailed her down and now I want to build a list around her. Below is what I consider to be the science behind Selvala. I hope you enjoy!
What is Parley?
Parley is a mechanic featured in the new 2014 Magic the Gathering set Conspiracy. When the parley ability is activated, each player reveals the top card of his or her library. You then get an ability which quantity is based on the number of nonland cards revealed this way. Then every player draws a card.
A very interesting ability. Parley, according to Oxford Dictionaries is defined as “A conference between opposing sides in a dispute, especially a discussion of terms for an armistice.” So, negotiations basically. Parley as a mechanic reflects this very well. You first make every opponent reveal their top card. This says “all guns on the table, no funny business.” A sign of mutual respect. Next, you lay out what you want for world domination. In order to get what you want and to make your opponent’s happy, give them their guns back. Your opponent’s got their cards, you got your go ahead for world domination, so back to business as usual: winning the game of Commander. I like parley because it is a unique effect that is brought to the table that becomes better the more people you have.
Parley: Group Hug or Card Advantage?
"You tell your king an old friend is here to see
him. We have much to discuss."
I feel like these two terms have been thrown around a lot lately when discussing Parley. I honestly think Parley doesn’t fall under either of these categories. Let me explain. Group Hug is defined as an instance of three or more people embracing each other simultaneously, usually for support. For Magic and other card games, it is the act of casting spells or activating other abilities to benefit or support other players on the field. Whether your means are honest or nefarious, the act of purposely helping another player is known as Group Hug. So the feature of every player drawing one card when Parley is activated seems to fit the requirements to be a Group Hug. However, note that before everyone draws a card, you and you alone get a special feature that no other player does. So technically, while everyone does draw cards, you get a bonus effect. Think about it this way: You have three friends, which makes a total of four of you who just got a pizza. This pizza has been cut into eight slices. A Group Hug would be where each one of you gets two pieces, or your three friends divide the pizza among themselves (2.667 slices exactly) and you eat a salad because you’re a real sport. A Parley would be where your three friends get one slice of pizza and you get five because you’re that kind of guy. Hope that shows that parley is not Group Hug.
Now we shall discuss card advantage. Card advantage is defined as a term used in collectible card game strategy to indicate one player having access to more cards than another player, usually by drawing more cards through in-game effects. Note that ONE player has more access to cards than ANOTHER player. With parley, everyone draws the same about of cards, so technically they do not gain card advantage; they gain cards. Here is a nice way to think about it: lets say those three friends of yours have decided to sword fight for the pizza. If there was only one sword and you got it before anyone else, you would have some sort of advantage over your three friends. Now, lets say there were four swords lying around and everyone grabbed a sword. So everyone has a sword and no one has any advantage per se above the other three. Card advantage, I will admit, is hard to pinpoint as there are so many definitions and exceptions. My definition was just the most cohesive way I could narrow it down in simple person terms. And perhaps one could argue that Parley DOES offer card advantage and I do agree somewhat. That being said, I believe parley is something that is not quite card advantage, but something a little more complex then having more advantage than someone else.
Problems with Parley
Daryl Bockett wrote a super awesome article on what was wrong with the set Conspiracy as a whole in terms of its means to target a multiplayer audience. He covered Parley in great detail. If you wish to read everything, you can find the article here. He basically covers the moral grounds of assuming that firing off a powerful ability, followed by compensation, will assume that players won’t perceive it as a threat. This idea of “he is doing something powerful. But it’s okay, I got a card!” is what Bockett believes is at its core, offensive. But in addition to this, there is the question of threat level.
Just because you give cards to your opponents don’t mean that your shenanigans will go unnoticed. To be quite honest, this new card you gave them could very well be the answer they need to deal with you. Activating parley is like a double-edged sword. It could harm your opponents, but can very well harm yourself. In case you want some awesome flavor, Selvala’s double-sided ax is a symbolic representation of the ability parley.
Which goes to the last problem. Your opponents get card. Yes you get some flashy mana and life and even YOU get a card. But no matter how you slice or dice it, your opponents get a card.
So Why Parley? Why Selvala?
So you just totally downplayed your commander and her key ability. Why should we even play her or this ability? Besides, Selvala isn’t that good of a Commander compared to your other options. I mean, she’s not on par with the power level of Gaddock Teeg, this build would be much better with Captain Sisay at the helm, and if I wanted to take this to the direction of Elf Tribal, Rhys the Redeemed is easily the best. So why her?
Because you can.
No other commander has a ability like Selvala, which rewards you and becomes stronger the more people you play. No other commander is a Elvish Spaniard. And no other commander has Elf Tribal, ramp, and life gain in the SAME CARD!! Selvala is not the commander we want, but she is the commander we deserve. Winning the game of Magic via drawing your opponent’s cards is VERY risky. So imagine if you win with her. You’ll get this feeling you wouldn’t get with other commanders. A unique feeling of success. That is why you can play Selvala. Plus, she got a big ol’ booty
The Build
This list is very rough, as you can see. I’ve put in some synergetic cards, but at this point it’s just good stuff with no real plan of attack. I would like to slowly make it into Elf Tribal with a hint of Voltron, all mixed in cards that synergize with Selvala. Help is needed for this list. Again, I apologize for this list being all over the place. So now that has been said, please provide any suggestions.
I will be watching this deck's progress - I'm a big fan of Selvala and I think she's more than the group hug label she's been given. I will be testing my own deck this week - I built mine around "whenever you gain life" benefits life Archangel of Thune and Well of Lost Dreams. The Well works great with her since you gain the same amount of life and mana with her ability - it turns her into Tap: Gain X life and draw X+1 cards.
Ive try many GW commander (in fact, almost all of them) but this one is my favorite.
I play Uba Mask/City of Solitude with selvala, and this is just the best.
Uba Mask seems awesome! I'm going to try to add one in if I can find one. And what is the synergy with City of Solitude? But that is a good card and I will try to find one too! I will look at your list in a bit!! Have you tried Pursuit of Knowledge? That card is the best of all time just kidding but seriously, look into that.

Why thank you I'm glad we see eye-to-eye. Building around life gain is a solid plan. My issue wih any commander is if you start packing your deck with cards that simply synergize with your commander, you start getting a really goofy deck. Thankfully, life gain is a strategy that on its own can be pretty lethal.
With city of solitude, your opponents will not be able to play cards while you make everyone draw, so you can actually deck them in peace, and here come pursuit of knowledge like you said, very usefull little gem ( i actually never sacrifice it).
good luck with your list, selvala is a blast to play!

The new spoiled card seems pretty good! Vigilance is an ability Selvala really needs and the extra card is pretty awesome. I think you can work around the drawback because Selvala can be sent to the command zone so she doesn't technically die. Here is an image and it is hidden for those of you who don't want anything spoiled. Cheers!
I'm having a blast building this deck as well and looked at Selvala the same way as you, not necessarily group hug. Just maybe enough that Selvala won't be the target of immediate removal which is what makes the card really good
I'll post a little of what I am planning
I think Selvala shines most when it can untap on opponents turns and net mana in the process. I packed my deck with lots of mana ramp in addition to Selvala's ramp and mana sinks. This allows Selvala's mana to be used every turn as well as for me to tap out all my mana on the end of an opponents turn.
One suggestions I would make is run mana relfection. With an Umbra mantle attached to Selvala, this almost guarantees that you will be able to pay for the untap with Selvala's own mana almost everytime. In addition, sword of the paruns acts as an additional Umbra mantle.
I run my selvala deck as a table-ruining combo that tries to win ASAP. It runs no real threats outside of those that combo with our commander. It doesn't run aura shards or much real removal. It does have an extraordinarily low mana curve with a total of 30-ish 0-and-1 drops with the goal to cast her on turn 1 or 2.
It does run every cheap untap effect available including rings of brighthearth, illusionist's bracers, magewright's stone, staff of domination, malachite talisman, instill energy, nature's chosen, vitalize, mobilize and others. I'm working on posting my list soon.
Huh. That might be the case - but it doesn't feel like a normal binary "tap to add G" ability. That'll probably be problematic and cause a few rules queries over time.
I do like the idea of working her as a combo win ASAP deck. But I really want to try to take this toward a more elf tribal direction. Any suggestions for that?

It depends on whether or not you want the tribal theme to be the main focus or not. If it's the former, start by taking out some of the goodstuff creatures (leave in the staple utility guys obviously) and start adding in Elves. Priest of Titania and Elvish Archdruid would be a good place to start building your tribal base off of. There are plenty of Elf Tribal lists on here that you can refer to in order to get some ideas.
Given that Elves can produce mana like it's nobody's business, run Genesis Wave to just overload the board. Mirror Entity can make your dudes huge, and counts as an Elf.
Depending on how many 1-drops you run, Ranger of Eos could be a good way to tutor them up.

Awesome suggestions!! I will start to look out for these cards
I like the idea of using elves with her, and the addition of white might put a fun spin on the elfball strategy. I also want to include other creatures with tap abilities I could abuse if Selvala's not in play, like Glissa, Sunseeker, Pentarch Paladin and Adarkar Valkyrie.

Interesting. Somewhat like backup plans in case someone kills Selvala. I may consider that. Although the cards in here are good without selvala, they just work much slower.
I just took out the Umezawa's Jitte for Exploration. The Jitte is a awesome utility card but feels just too general and good stuff in this deck. Also, I realized I draw a lot of cards with Selvala, which means my hand gets clogged with lands. When that happens, I always wish I had Exploration rather than the Jitte on the field, doing pretty much nothing. Also, being a swarm deck in some senses, Jitte's power goes down a little. I feel this is a good trade off. I'll be playing Selvala this month for the league at my shop, so I'll report more soon!
