I just bought myself an imperial seal (English! $400!) and I feel like showing off a bit. Unfortunately, most decks simply don't need more than a few of my high-end cards, and many of them need boring, cheap staples like sol ring, stp, and basic lands. But I figured - hell with that! I'm going to take my 60 most expensive cards, and my 40 most expensive lands, and MAKE them make an EDH deck.
Anyway, this is the result. Any resemblance this thread has to me bragging is purely coincidental.
I can't really modify the deck without changing the whole point, but how do you think it's going to perform? What's going to be the best/worst card? I suspect invoke prejudice is going to suck pretty bad
I think I've got about 90% of this deck myself. I still need to pick up a Queen/Legion (annoying as I don't really want to play them outside of a Sliver deck which why would I want to do that?), and I don't have Old Man of the Sea, Meng Huo, Dong Zhou, Sun Ce, Lu Meng, Lady Zhurong, Zhang Fei, Drop of Honey, or Living Plane.
Oh, or Diamond Valley.

Those are both on my radar - bazaar moreso than workshop since I think it fits into more decks. Also on my radar: timetwister, candelabra, chains, rolling earthquake, tarmogoyf, etc. So this deck can keep getting....better?
yeah, yeah, i know. I don't think it's THAT great of a card, though, I'd probably only even consider it for mono-colored decks.
I hate foils, no foils for me. Well except that the recruiter is a foil because it was way cheaper....lame. same with my overwhelming forces and loyal retainers and (at least for the moment) diaochan, hence why they didn't make the cut. They are all shameful to me.
Hermit Druid with 10 duals, 10 fetches, all the expensive tutors, could be really expensive if you make it that way.
..
Yeah but hermit druid is like a couple bucks, and so are most of the combo cards. Plus it doesn't even use tabernacle! How can it be the most expensive deck without tabernacle?! That's what I want to know.
I don't think you appreciate the point of being magic-rich. It's not about winning. It's about pointlessly squandering it.
yeah, yeah, i know. I don't think it's THAT great of a card, though, I'd probably only even consider it for mono-colored decks.
But it's expensive!
True, but it wouldn't even crack my top 10.
Generally I try to aim for cards I know I'll use a lot first. To be fair, tabernacle has not gotten much play yet, but on the other hand I got it in very close to mint condition for $420, which looks like a better and better deal as time goes by. But that's why I've gotten cards like grim tutor before cards like nether void - grim tutor goes into lots of decks, while nether void goes into very few.
The seal/ravages/capture/recruiter/retainers/forces/XHD? Because they're legit good, albeit overpriced.
The dong zhou/sun ce/lu meng/etc? Because I also collect all legends (original edition, english only NO FOILS!) and I've got almost all of them. All but 2 in fact - excluding the new crap, and also there's a handful (4) that I have in some stupid reprint form that I'd like to get in the original set (Diaochan among them, in fact of the 10 legends I have to get her and Athreos are the only ones above $10).
Actually that reminds me, hua tuo should be in here, I think deckstats figured I had the crappy comm2013 version. Silly deckstats...
EDIT: poo, that removes vamp tutor. Whatever, who wants consistency anyway? Not I.
Man no foils? I've done this before nice collection though. Get a timetwister! If you go foil you can keep things like vamp tutor
lol, nah I hate foils, especially in a situation like this because some would be foil and some couldn't be, and also because I think foils are about as cool, classic, and pretty as spinning rims on a car. Pass.
Timetwister is fairly low on my priority list. I hate giving my opponents' cards, I don't even like wheel of fortune in my krenko all that much. Passing to an opponent with decent number of lands and a full grip of cards is existentially terrifying, and if I'm playing blue I'm almost always sitting on 4+ cards at a given time so the value is low. Only deck I'd really, really, REALLY want it in is nekusar, and I think that deck is about the least creative deck imaginable so I don't intend to build it anytime soon. So yeah, I don't think it's worth the cost. I'd much rather get a bazaar. I might get one at some point, but it probably won't be very soon.
Cute. This reminds me of a deck I built back in the day. It had a full playset of ABUR duals and every card (OOP or not) worth over $10 dollars in it (Fallen Empire being the latest set to give an idea of what it had). The deck was over a hundred cards... the cards were sleeved and in top loaders... it was obnoxious, but fun!
And more to the point... your Expensive Stuffs.dec needs Chains of Mephistopheles (which I see you've already mentioned).
Can this deck win? Its sweet that its all expensive cards, but sometimes you need cheap cards to get you there.
This deck would use Brainstorm, Impulse, Intuition, Demonic Tutor, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, Mana Crypt and Coalition Relic to ensure you can cast your spells without getting screwed on colours or mana in general.
Entomb needs a spot in this deck purely for land fixing with Riftstone Portal. If you throw that in your graveyard, and you have Urborg in play - all your lands tap for their respective colours, Black, Green and White.
My favorite thing about this deck is the mox opal with such low odds of having metalcraft
it's rules text basically says "Haha look at me I'm fifty dollars"
Ha, that's true, although at least it's free. My favorite thing in the deck is the invoke prejudice, which is not only nearly uncastable but also will often do next to nothing, as long as my general is on the battlefield. At least it makes their artifact creatures expensive. Which, ironically, it was never designed to do.
I just put it together last night, and god willing I'll be able to test it out tomorrow briefly, with a more extensive test on Tuesday depending how things go. Also I missed wheel of fortune (deckstats assumed I was playing a BB version but mine is revised) so it got replaced with vamp tutor, hooray!
I've never been so afraid to shuffle a deck. It's like shuffling a high-quality used car.
If you're that fellow at Card Kingdom doing the same thing I look forward to playing against it.
