While looking for ideas to start with a new EDH deck, I was browsing the list of generals and saw that no one had posted one based on Hythonia the Cruel. Apparently someone beat me by a day posting the first, but this is a different, more controlling variant.
It's your typical heavy board control black deck, supporting Hythonia's natural board sweep built into her monstrosity ability. Optimally, I want to win with general damage since she's a three turn clock once monstrous, but there are other methods throughout, including the Bloodchief Ascension/Mindcrank combo, Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon for poison kills, Phyrexian Processor, especially after draining some life... there's plenty of ways to let this Gorgon finally have a chance to shine.
Once I get everything tested out on this initial list, I'll likely make some changes based on performance, but I'm also open to suggestions.
Notes and changes:
1. Infest will be replaced by Drown in Sorrow ASAP.
2. Could possibly add an Inkmoth Nexus as a small support to the Skithiryx plan.
3. Shizo, Death's Storehouse needs to be in the land base somewhere, likely just substituting for a normal Swamp.
Crow: Luxembourg, please get down on your bony European knees and thank your lucky stars every day that you're not Japan. Mike: Crow, now... Crow: Hey, are you Luxembourg? Mike: No -- Crow: THEN SHUT UP!
- MST3K, Ep. 819
Winding Canyons has been working pretty well for me since I've started using it. It lets me leave mana up to do other things on my turn.
Blade of the Bloodchief is also fantastic. When you aren't going pseudo voltron like I am, it makes the general damage wincon easier. You won't get the bonus unless it's equipped to Anowon, but if you're going to wipe the board anyways...
Hey, no worries on that little race that really wasn't. I'm just glad to fill the gap for a card that should have some potential in this kind of shell. Thanks for the input as well, though I wish Winding Canyons worked for more than just creatures since I'm so creature-light.
