Hi, this is my first post but i want to post this not to be a deck list but to show that Animar, soul of elements does not have to be a super stompy creature deck but that he functions well as a combo/control commander. This other side of Animar can be used with cards like prophet of kruphix, and Tidespout tyrant helping you dominate the field and putting pressure on your opponent(s). With one of Animar's colors being blue (probably the strongest color in the format) you have access to many spells such as cryptic command and draining whelk. These spells don't just help you control your opponent(s) actions but they also help Animar. Overall, this post was to shed light on Animar's other uses and i am going to include my decklist as an example for anyone interested in seeing something like "control Animar"
How's your deck performance in a competitive meta? Feels slow than the Combo Animar that (the most basic win con) Imperial Recruiter+Phyrexian Metamorph+Peregrine Drake... Or often abusing Kozilek and Ulamog using that bounce artifact (can't named it right now) for infinite draw and/or vindicate. That the same bounce spell works awesome with Earthcraft which used 1cmc Aura lands....
Thanks for reading!
currently i play this deck at a local store and i have done exceptionally well. the only match up that i struggle with is the Kaalia match up because it is too fast. In the first version of the list i played earthcraft but i rather attack with my big creatures because I think Animar has many covered. If anything people that i play with don't want my deck to become any stronger because where i play there is only a hand full of competitive decks. I have been wanting to replace trinket mage with the Kiora, crashing wave but she does not come out until February.
thanks for the tips! when i go this weekend i might try to hunt down some of the cards and try them out.

Yeah. Those insight came from my experience playing against and watching Jester's Animar combo... Other than that, I've often compare his deck with other Animar because it's fast enough to have a decent match with Zur... And the only banned card that he used is Primetime... He even sometimes skip him unless it's necessary.
I made this deck last year and at the time i did not even know that MTGsalvation existed so this deck is completely home made so if i am missing something it is because i haven't figured it out yet. I am not a fan of Net decking and i like to play original decks that i made, it gives me a different mind set while playing. The combos i usually get that i found while playing are:
1) Palinchron + Animar (5 counters) + seven lands = infinite mana and infinite/infinite Animar
2) Palinchron + Animar (5 counters) + seven lands + cunning wish (to get blue sun zenith)= infinite mill
3) (a little more obscure) Palinchron + Animar (5 counters) + seven lands + soul of the harvest + Psychosis Crawler= just enough damage to kill them and with the infinite mana and your entire library you can combo #2 to kill another opponent, you can also if you have a creature that gives your creatures haste you can cryptic command and freeze someone's board and swing for the kill
there are also lots of synergies including:
counterbalance + top
consecrated sphinx/+/Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur + Psychosis Crawler= 9 damage per turn
avenger of zendikar + tidespout tyrant with enough mana you can get a ton of tokens combine that with doubling season (not in list yet) = too many tokens
memnarch + prophet of kruphix= easy taking over of people's stuff
goblin sharpshooter + Basilisk collar = mow done opponent(s) board
Animar + primordial hydra = well... this ones self explanatory
top + lurking predators= similar to countertop but with creatures
these are what i have found while playing the list but i am open to adding more combos

I've seen counterbalance top on EDH... Not really that good even in a competitive level. Mental Misstep and stifle had more kill count than those 2 put together... Or Top is deemed more a threat than a UU enchantment.
You might want to add mana dorks to your list. And add that artifact scarecrow that makes your opponent creatures or spells useless to Animar.
Just a quick note. Try and test your deck online that way you have more experience in how to play against a more broken deck and think of a way to make it more efficient.
The decks i have played against are: Kaalia, skullbriar, mayael, sliver overlord, Sharuum, krenko, trostian, memnarch, norna the warry, shattergang bros and mishra artifact guy
where i play is a small store that a good 25 people go to on weekends but probably 15 of them have edh decks. The ones i have named are off the top of my head

For having cheap creatures, you can add Curse of Predation making cheap 1 1/1's into a growing army.
Jester managed to get the necessary combos with different scenario OTHER than the most common denominator combo... with more than noninfinite ways to make Animar big... or win without ever using Animar (and his list only have a handful of 5+cmcs).
thanks for the suggestions!
i like all of them but i don't know what to take out. Also, Gaea's Cradle is "Banned" where i play because with my old list, i could win turn five with it. I would like to talk more about the list and can u help explain some of your choices to me? if there are any combos?

Jester831 in his Imperial Animar thread is one of the most talked when it comes to Animar. It's easy to build (especially for online games) but really hard to pilot. Jester and some few experienced players can pull it off.
My Maelstrom Wanderer thread so far an active thread because I kept posting my tally points and insert and/or help other people discussing its potential.
Thanks

1x Cunning Wish... what do you even use that card for? You don't even have a list of cards for you to show...
Some cards are decent... but others... are too pricy despite having awesome effects. In a competitive scene... the cards that I've listed feels... sluggish. I've seen good stuff Animar playing against Jester's Imperial Animar and they just couldn't do anything about it. If that happens, can they survive an optimized Zur or any other 1v1 Top tier decks?
How functional are they when you draw them? You have to ask... can you cast that card if you draw them during early games? If so, how much impact can it cause or inflicted if it's being cast at a later time? And you have to add... what happens if Animar doesn't have enough counters?
Still cunning wish can be any card i own from outside the game, i have it in for the palinchron mill combo
you are right about counterbalance being week in edh, this deck was made of cards i already had that worked
Lurking predators being 6 mana i alot, it still is nice having opponents casting your creature for you but sometimes it can mess with combos
Bogarden hellkite is usually casted as a 2 mana 5 damage 5/5 dragon but before that is possible, it at 8 mana is almost too big for animar
sphinx ambassador is almost a prodigy to me in the format and i have never seen it played in any other deck, if edh had sideboards this would be in it seeing as against creature decks (like meayel) it is deadly but before i cast it, it at 7 mana is big on the curve
psychosis crawler was a recent addition to the line up and i added him at the same time i added Jin-Gitaxias, core augur, i can get crawler out decently fast and i like his "1 damage" ability when it comes to card draw but it sems week to me in edh
sphinx of uthuun is like a 7 mana 5/6 flying fact or fiction and i like his card draw ability and in the meta game where i play, flyers hit hard but again mana
simic sky swallower i put in for the same reason i have sphinx of uthuun, he hits hard and with trample and shroud he is hard to control
i like memnarch, alot and he was a impulse decision to ad that i have not regretted. 7 mana is alot but all colorless helps. the main reason i like him is that he adds alot of pressure to the field and is functional in alot of instances
intet the dreamer I added last night acutally and i have not had a chance to test him. he seems good if i played more big stuff. i add alot of cards that soon get removed with in hours of adding them. i have been making this deck for a year now and i must have tried out a 100 cards or more and removed them after testing them but only the ones that work like prophet of kruphix and have a big impact when they hit the field stay.
if i were to take out these cards, what will i add?
p.s. i read the entire imperial animar article

All of the pages? Jester has a lot of input of why he had those instead of the stuff everyone has. I've seen him in action and so all of his decks, Animar is popular deck that he used in Cockatrice. Despite lacking the oomph like big dragons and titans, he plays of what I considered "watching an acrobat performing without a net."
People using Goodstuff against him are dead by turn 4... Against top tier, he'll go a different route. People net deck his deck loose to turn 2 Jitte... And managed to drop his key cards without casting Animar.
Lately people start to apply his list and added the good stuff... So pretty much 60-80% in the deck consist of Jester's brew.
So what's the verdict on those cards? they seem good but there are many to chose from. I like slithermuse and the imperial recruiter combo but what else?

Cheap cards that can dig itself like skullclamp and raven an etc... In addition to cards that goes well with recruiter (FYI I hoped you have access that guy).
There are a lot of cards in my list that you can't really get an appreciate for until you see them in action. At the very least, I would incorporate all of the good tempo and card advantage creatures in any Animar build, regardless of whether or not if it's hardline combo.
Specifically, excluding mana creatures from the list, all animar builds should have:
I think i can get my hands on a recruiter (note that with all the changes that when deck still is missing a good 15 to 20 cards). also i need to talk to the people i play with about legalizing gaea's cradle. Thanks for all the feed back i have been working on my deck for a few hours now so i might be able to post an updated list soon
well, where i play is a smaller store in CT but commander games (usually after standard games) is very popular. some people have casual and competitive decks. i have played in 1v1 games to 4v4 games. also at my school during frees, i play with my friends alot. i would love to make my deck better and better because it almost inspires the people that watch the edh games to get into it create more people who play. Also the format never shifts so it only gains more cards. eventhough i kick some but when i play i still loose to commanders like kaalia and krenko. 2 decks that i always loose to (i am not kidding) are combo elves and hinterland hermit combo decks. i would like to make additions because Animar is my favorite commander and my only one. If it is not RUG i don't play it

You may also like to check out my Animar primer (link in sig.). It is designed for multiplayer rather than 1v1 so it has a different focus compared to Jesters list (and a different ban list), but you still might find some of the strategy and discussion there useful.

I've been playing Jester's list for about 4-5 months at my LGS in both French and MTGCommander Banlist, and have an excellent matchup against Kaalia and Combo Elves, mostly by virtue of being a turn faster than them.
I would make the changes that Arcadus and Jester suggested - they help streamline the deck alot. I don't think that Intent the Dreamer, Sphinx Ambassador, and Memnarch are good enough in the deck, because of their cost and the old 'dies to removal' argument. Simic Sky Swallower doesn't help against Board Wipes, which are very good against this deck, and also doesn't have very much of an effect on the Board.
If you really want to inspire people, you should definitely give Jester's list a try. It's powerful, consistent, and has a lot of play to it. It's also a good counterargument against the people who say that their can't be engine combo decks in EDH...
Either way, I think you should definitely start playing on Cockatrice. Like Jester said, it's free. The level of competition is also generally quite high.
Thanks for all the feed back! also i do play alot of multiplayer and i am always targeted by the other players. i would like to give jester's list a try and a probably will but i would like to keep my list's core so 2 Animar decks then. one competitive (jester) one casual (mine).
thanks again

Also using and abusing cheap creatures like Glimpse of Nature.
Not sure if you have Trinket Mage to grab 0<1 artifacts... Which Jester clamp useless creatures.... Or Mox.
All those cards can be combo off by turn 3 or 4 at least. Even if they have blockers... You can simply bounce them and etc.

intet the dreamer I added last night acutally and i have not had a chance to test him. he seems good if i played more big stuff. i add alot of cards that soon get removed with in hours of adding them. i have been making this deck for a year now and i must have tried out a 100 cards or more and removed them after testing them but only the ones that work like prophet of kruphix and have a big impact when they hit the field stay.
if i were to take out these cards, what will i add?
p.s. i read the entire imperial animar article

Don't get me started on his Melek.

Specifically, excluding mana creatures from the list, all animar builds should have:

That's basically the mandatory do not skimp on list in my book. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure I'd want to invest that much money if the end product is a deck that you can't enjoy among them.
If you're serious about competitive gameplay, you should try out cockatrice - which is also free!

The level of competition is also generally quite high.
thanks again
