“Morals are no more than blind obedience to words of command.” —Selenia, dark angel
Why choose between light and dark when both are alluring, when each cannot exist without the other. There will never be a shadow without a trace of light.
White and black, they contrast and complement each other, so throw over board the doctrines of what is good and evil and follow your heart’s desire. It’s just a matter of where you stand.
You will like this deck if
- you like being in control and having answers to (almost) everything
- you like the table to play by your rules
- you like fallen angels and playing with obscure cards
- you are prepared to walk the edge between life & death
- you like to have multiple avenues to victory
You will not like this deck if
- you like being the aggressor
- you like stack-based control
- you hate paying life for your gains
- you hate angels (or at least the ones not as elevated) and playing niche cards
“I am light. I am dark. I must give my life to serve; not even death can release me.” —Selenia, dark angel
There is no alternative to Selenia and what she enables: playing heavy board control with few creatures and massive amounts of board wipes and still being able to re-cast her for always the same cost.
Only Obzedat, Ghost Council enables a similar strategy in these colors.
But Selenia lets you reduce your life total at a whim, which enables diabolic plays - if you’re not afraid to go beyond the realms of life.
A Dark Tale
"These moonless, foreign skies keep me in thrall. Dark whispers echo in the night, and I cannot resist."
—Selenia, dark angel
From the MTGS-Wiki:
Selenia was once a true angel from Serra's Realm. She was an extraordinary warrior under the command of Radiant, the archangel who protected the plane against the Phyrexian invasion.
During combat, Selenia was taken prisoner by the enemy, who then used Phyrexian technology to twist her into a dark angel. The Phyrexians gave her the charge of keeping vigil over a noble young man named Crovax of Urborg, under the guise of being the Windgrace family's guardian angel. The lonely nobleman came to see the angel as his only true friend.
Time passed and Crovax fell in love with Selenia, but the angel could not return his affection. Crovax ran away with the artifact that controlled Selenia and joined the Weatherlight crew. This allowed the Phyrexian creaturesMorinfen and Gallowbraid to slaughter Crovax's family, who were left without a protector. Crovax and the Weatherlight crew confronted the demons in a fierce battle in which Rofellos was killed. Crovax summoned Selenia, whose skill turned the fight around. However, the angel was still unable to reciprocate Crovax's love. In desperation, Crovax destroyed the machine that controlled Selenia and the angel flew away, far from the hands of the man who loved her. She made her way to Rath, where she was placed in the service of the Phyrexian army.
Several years later, Selenia resurfaced when Weatherlightplaneshifted to Rath to rescue Sisay. Due to her bond with Crovax, Selenia guided Predator into battle. The sight of his love turning against him drove Crovax insane, leaving him paralyzed with grief during the battle and afterwards leaving him with the single purpose of confronting his love and killing her. The two met again in the Stronghold, where Selenia badly wounded Mirri. Crovax wildly attacked the weeping Selenia, who allowed herself to be struck. However, in the instant that he killed her a terrible curse befell Crovax, turning him into a vampire.
Some time later Selenia was recreated by Yawgmoth, but she was little more than a puppet on a string. She was routinely used as a reward for the now-insane evincar Crovax when he completed a task and prayed to Yawgmoth. Selenia was last seen when Crovax was killed, emerging to take his spirit to the afterlife and giving him a form of redemption.
Initially I was drawn to Selenia since she was the only black and white angel, but also because she lent herself to a different deck than all the other Orzhov legends. As I learned about her torn character during the Time Spiral era, when her story was retold with a different outcome, that intrigued me even more. So, when I stumbled across Obob’s version of Selenia (http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=263851) during the summer of 2012 I decided to follow her call – as Crovax once did.
To date it’s still my favorite deck.
A War of Light and Shadow
“Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do."
—Selenia, dark angel
This is the deck in its current iteration sorted by card type with the casting cost in front:
Avg. Mana Cost: 3.60
- Selenia’s extraordinary warrior skills, wielding magnificent swords aka 21 Commander damage.
- An army of angels (from Entreat the Angels or Luminarch Ascension) seeking passionate vengeance.
- Journeying to the edge of life and returning – Near-Death Experience, Soul Conduit, Reverse the Sands and particularly Repay in Kind.
The first two strategies are greatly aided by the ability to ravage opponents lands with either Desolation Angel or Catastrophe.
Which of these paths to tread is dependent on the situation and the matchup. Just be patient and wait which road opens up.
A Glimpse of Life and Death
“You’ve only fully experienced life when you’ve lived to the bitter end of love.” —Selenia, dark angel
Where do the paths of light and dark lead us? What toils do we have to go through to reach victory, to be able to say “I have truly lived”?
The cards:
Removal and Board Control – the backbone of the deck:
Path to Exile – one of the best spot removals there is Swords to Plowshares – one of the best spot removals there is Mortify – instant speed and flexible answer to problem enchantments or creatures Return to Dust – usually a two for one that exiles troublesome permanents Innocent Blood – for those indestructables still standing after a board wipe Aura of Silence – mostly used as spot removal for artifacts and enchantments right away, but played early it works wonders in slowing down opponents’ developments Vindicate – can’t get more flexible than this Damnation – creatures be damned! Day of Judgment – this should probably be Wrath of God Hallowed Burial – one of the best answers to creatures in this format, especially since Selenia will never be buried by this Rout – the ability to be played as an instant is invaluable Austere Command – very flexible mass removal Catastrophe – this is quite often used to close out a game via land destruction once I have an overwhelming board advantage, but can be a rescue from an onslaught in a pinch Terminus – often a one mana Hallowed Burial, as it’s actually rather easy to miracle with the help of either SDT, Scroll Rack, Vampiric or Cruel Tutor Decree of Pain – despite being expensive, it’s worth it for the card draw alone, besides all the other control cards usually buy enough time
Angel of Despair – an angel with a destructive, dark side, this gives you an out to any permanent and a threat Desolation Angel – she will end games, that’s what she’s here for, destroying all lands is quite powerful, especially if it comes with a threat.
Blind Obedience – protects against hasted creatures which can be a bane, als the extort is quite relevant as there’s often enough time and resources to play “one turn behind” and you can deal the final points of damage needed to win this way Ghostly Prison – this is such a good deterrent that saves the resources in hand Humility – so game-changing it’s ridiculous, and with all the swords even a lowly 1/1 can be a threat, not to speak of Gideon Jura No Mercy – it’s not always possible to handle a rapidly developing board with “just” spellbased removal, great deterrent
Kor Haven – this leads to opponents overextending into a wrath and is quite a political tool Maze of Ith – see Kor Haven The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale – so good to keep creature hordes in check and hamper peoples’ board development
Tutors and Card Draw – the clockworks that keep the deck ticking:
Weathered Wayfarer – tutors any(!) land be it the Tabernacle, the mazes or Urborg Stoneforge Mystic – equipment is very important in this list, she searches is up and cheats it into play Bloodgift Demon – card draw, that can go for the throat Stonehewer Giant – equipment is really important Sensei’s Divining Top – good card selection that sets up the miracles and works well with land tax Scroll Rack – really good card draw with land tax and miracle enabler Land Tax – search for land every turn, shuffle for the top, combo with Scroll Rack Necropotence – best card draw there is, which can also replace Selnia in her function to lower your life total at will Phyrexian Arena – knowledge and more options are invaluable, even if they cost life Enlightened Tutor – can grab most of the important stuff Vampiric Tutor – can get you everything and set up a bloody miracle Demonic Tutor – can get you everything Cruel Tutor – can get you everything and set up a bloody miracle Diabloic Tutor – a little on the expensive side, but with a deck such as this, being able to get exactly what you need is invaluable Promise of Power – draw five, and ocassionally get a big beater
Win Conditions – the path to victory:
Serra Ascendant – will usually not end a game but can get in for some serious damage, a homage to Selenia’s origins Battlegrace Angel – she strengthens Selenia and gives her lifelink, no need to waste resources – such as life. She’s been decent, but certainly up for debate. Gideon Jura – he will be best under a humility, but he’s always a reliable brother in arms Sorin Markov – taking someone down to 10 life is a really hard blow and exactly what this deck aims at Lightning Greaves – not a win condition per se but protection for the lady Sword of Feast and Famine – equipment makes Selenia and everything else a serious threat, for the power boost and protections alone, untapping one’s lands after the bearer connects is almost as good as a time walk, the discard is good card advantage, too Sword of Fire and Ice – see above, but drawing cards and burning a target for two Sword of War and Peace – this can cause some enormous life swings and is a lot better than the W/B-sword in this deck Sword of Vengeance – first strike, trample, haste, vigilance and a good power boost, Selenia can almost mirror Akroma Batterskull – great equipment, that is hard to handle for opponents and even better under humility Soul Conduit – going down to a very low life total thanks to Selenia’s ability or Necropotence and then swapping that for the highest life total at the table feels just glorious Reverse the Sands – this works similar to the Soul Conduit, except you can switch life totals around as you like, so the opponent with the strongest board will receive the lowest life total Repay in Kind – this is dangerous territory, as everybody will be close to dying after Repay resolves, especially if Selenia paid in blood, however this will win you the game on the spot with Angel’s Grace – so you can go to zero life with Selenia’s ability if you were at an even life total before. Just respond to the return to hand ability, by paying two life to send her to your hand again, and again and again … until you’re down at zero. Split Second ensures you won’t die at the brink of death. Near-Death Experience – if you’re at an uneven life total, you can use that same trick, to go down to one life at will, which will let you win the game with this transcendent experience Entreat the Angels – calling upon an army of angels is sometimes a miracle, more often than not it’s calculated. Unfortunately SDT is the only way to miracle this at instant speed, but it works surprisingly well Luminarch Ascension – with all the board wipes and control it’s rather easy to ascend to four counters and start becoming a serious threat to the table
Recursion – return from the dead:
Obzedat’s Aid – this can bring back any permanent, even one of the planeswalkers; since so many of the most important cards in this list are non-creatures, this is great Beacon of Unrest – can not only reanimate creatures from any graveyard, but also artifacts and is (potentially reusable)
The Mana – realms and stones:
Sol Ring – best man rock there is Orzhov Signet – good early mana Chromatic Lantern – invaluable as this will make Maze of Ith, The Tabernacle and Boseiju produce mana as well Coalition Relic – good mana fixing and ramp, this deck likes a lot of mana, and in case of a Catastrophe this serves well to keep you in the game Darksteel Ingot – indestructible mana Thunder Totem – a rock that can hold a sword and function well under a humility Gilded Lotus – see coalition relic
Bojuka Bog – this deck is very light on graveyard hate, this is the least one can play without dedicating a “real” slot to it Boseiju, Who Shelters All – counterspell protection for game ending spells Cavern of Souls – counterspell protection for the angels; with these two lands the Repay in Kind combo is uncounterable, as well as the land destruction Flagstones of Trokair – a little head start after land destruction Reliquary Tower – lets you keep all the cards you draw with Necropotence Shizo, Death’s Storehouse – sometimes Selenia needs to ge through unimpeded Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth - invaluable as this will make Maze of Ith, The Tabernacle and Boseiju produce mana as well
So I hope you enjoyed this journey between light and dark and maybe found it inspiring. This list is certainly not perfect, and I’d be happy to hear some suggestions where you see room for improvements.

Day of Judgment – this should probably be Wrath of God
Hallowed Burial – one of the best answers to creatures in this format, especially since Selenia will never be buried by this
Rout – the ability to be played as an instant is invaluable
Austere Command – very flexible mass removal
Catastrophe – this is quite often used to close out a game via land destruction once I have an overwhelming board advantage, but can be a rescue from an onslaught in a pinch

Stonehewer Giant – equipment is really important
Sensei’s Divining Top – good card selection that sets up the miracles and works well with land tax
Scroll Rack – really good card draw with land tax and miracle enabler
Land Tax – search for land every turn, shuffle for the top, combo with Scroll Rack
Necropotence – best card draw there is, which can also replace Selnia in her function to lower your life total at will
Phyrexian Arena – knowledge and more options are invaluable, even if they cost life
Enlightened Tutor – can grab most of the important stuff
Vampiric Tutor – can get you everything and set up a bloody miracle

Sword of War and Peace – this can cause some enormous life swings and is a lot better than the W/B-sword in this deck

Bojuka Bog – this deck is very light on graveyard hate, this is the least one can play without dedicating a “real” slot to it
Boseiju, Who Shelters All – counterspell protection for game ending spells
Cavern of Souls – counterspell protection for the angels; with these two lands the Repay in Kind combo is uncounterable, as well as the land destruction
Flagstones of Trokair – a little head start after land destruction

Shizo, Death’s Storehouse – sometimes Selenia needs to ge through unimpeded
