I'm privileged to share with you my somewhat-successful Commander deck for Grixis, Nekusar. I played Crosis for the past two years, and as the group I play in upgraded their power level, I found his need to hit in combat to activate his ability backfired more and more. I was more than overjoyed at the release of this new, passive Commander who punishes the table equally, and a little bit surprised no one has submitted a deck list before.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do playing it, and I'm always happy to receive comments and tips.
There have actually been a number of threads discussing this guy. Check a few pages back. Also, I would advise posting your list not alphabetically, but by card type/function. It makes the deck a lot easier to read, and as such, will increase the replies and suggestions for your deck.
Fixed the format, and happy to talk about synergies.
Wheel of Fortune and similar cards are the point of the deck. I try to set up the most painful forced discard and draw scenario I can.
Most of the good cards for this strategy are incredibly low in CMC, so Duskmantle Seer is an alternate win con with Seizan, Perverter of Truth and Nekusar. To reinforce this slow win, I run the Glacial Chasm and Crucible of Worlds combo, which also stands to protect you from your own spells if someone clones one of your combo pieces .
Finally, there is probably the cheesiest combo in the format: Bloodchief Ascension, Mindcrank and any damage (I prefer Earthquake) sets up an infinite damage combo that wipes out your opponents together. At my table, he who plays the Ascension is the one who gets attacked every turn, so I fall back on the Duskmantle Guildmage when I've pooled enough mana.
Quite simply, basic lands and the nonbasics I'm running are far better than the artifact lands, which are devastated by the high amount of artifact hate in my play group.
Trinket Mage is for searching out mana rocks to accelerate the deck so it can keep forcing through Wheel effects.
I usually hold Tef's box back till I cyclonic rift away troublesome boardstates and irritating generals. Drop the box in my turn and watch the table hiss and spit while they bottom deck all their goodstuff and take a heap of damage from draw tax.
Curious how Glacial Chasm and Crucible of Worlds is a combo? All I can see is you getting back the one land you sacced to the Chasm.
Why does every list for this general run Dark Ritual? It's just no good in a Grixis punisher! What situation are you in where more removal, another Sudden Impact, more draw, or something like Whelming Wave isn't a strictly better top deck?
Seems like some good card choices are missing. The Bloodchief Combo seems...flimsy, but workable. Mindcrank/Guildmage is fine, but a cornball play with two solo jank cards that, again are just horrible top decks without the other card in hand or play. Dregs of Sorrow seems to be overlooked in this list too.
The Teferi Puzzle Box is a pretty good idea. I think I just might!
The Bloodchief Combo is flimsy? I'll agree it isn't as brainless as Niv-Mizzet, the firemind and Curiosity, but if your opponents are playing shocklands, Purphoros, god of the forge, or just attacking in general, it can be active as early as turn two or three. The synergy with your commander is amazing, and two cards in the deck kill everyone at table with it active. Since no one in my playgroup runs single-target enchantment removal, this has been a star for me for years. Worst-case scenario is it draws a board sweeper or a better card out of their hands.
The point of this deck is to win early with a successful chain of fast and powerful spells that feed into each other, so there's no room for Dregs. If I'm chilling out with the 7+ mana I need to make this card work, something's gone terribly wrong. I am currently looking for more options to keep the party going; I'm considering dropping slow cards like the Seer and the Master of the Feast for more tutors, more ramp and possibly even Timetwister.
Thanks for the suggestions, and please let me know how your Nekusar decks are doing!
Personally one of my favorite cards with Nekusar is Forced Fruition. forcing your opponents to draw 7 cards for every spell they play is just brutal with him. Price of Knowledge is good as well. Team them both with puzzle box and you have a hard hitter. Works for me anyway. of course you could always play elder mastery on nekusar...
