I don't know how much it concentrates on winning... (I found that a single Aven Mindcensor and a counterspell from one opponent shut me down for a while and I often have trouble with hexproof or shroud creatures above 4/4)
I was wondering about any modification ideas anyone has had due to the new stuff that has come out. (This includes Dragon's Maze)
I myself play a very similar list to the linked post, except that my commander is reaper king, I run an additional tutor machine/toolbox (Momir Vig), in lieu of sunforger (which I would love to find room for), and some of the newer stuff.
My deck focuses on CA quite a bit (via skullclamp, coiling oracle, elvish visionary, Sphinx's revelation, etc.) I found that aven mindcensor, stranglehold, and similar effects just screwed my old builds so I try to always maintain ways of getting cards.
I am trying to build a deck that can handle the long haul but I find that I am just losing all of the time. I wholeheartedly admit that I find this deck fun, exciting, and sort of a kick myself, damn it! I tutored for the wrong thing again experience.
If you have any ideas on combos or interactions with the list itself please point them out if I have not. I am so inexperienced I might not actually be seeing them.
Here is my slightly more modern (and Budget) version of the Ultimate Toolbox list:
Deck Notes: This deck tutors like crazy. I like to abuse ETB abilities, Skull Clamp, Crib Swap, and cloudstone curio. I am only running 37 lands and some are colorless so tutoring for ramp creatures is critical. Mulling until I have a green mana provider is also essential (or something really good), I have mulled down to four card hands more than I care to admit.
Problems: Counter spells (I tried putting Vexing Shusher in here but...to no avail.), early aggression with the "SWORDS" usually equals that boot-ant analogy fairly quickly unless I draw something useful.
(Graveyard Wipes are not too bad for me anymore. I usually can come back. I have a lot of redundant cards in here so I do okay.)
On the Commander: I wrestle with playing Reaper King versus other 5 colour commanders. I found that Sliver Overlord required too many slivers to really be worth it. (Though I am considering trying him again in this build)
On the Goodstuff portion of the deck: I was considering going full scarecrow at one point but my meta requires diverse answers. Without Reaperking (either getting tucked or stolen, or whatever) I get screwed. So full scarecrow was out. Over time I have found that in my group you have to play lots of artifact hate, lots of recursion, and have a low curve if you want to have a chance.
I know my curve is pretty high right now, so any advice in that area would be appreciated.
On the amazing cards in the linked list: Imperial Recruiter, Mana Crypt, Adun Oakenshield, angus Mackenzie, etc). I either cannot afford them, do not have them, or for example in the case of Kira, the great glass spinner, or similar cards they actually don't help with my equipment, sac outlets, or other needs.
On my meta: almost everyone I play with is both better and more experienced than I am. I play with (what, like everyone else,) I believe is a competitive meta. Their deck overviews are here:
Player A: has an uber competitive Venser, Shapersavant deck, a very good Brion Stoutarm deck, and has recently made a Rosheen Meanderer deck that is hit and miss.
Player B: has an overwhelmingly resilient, answer after answer Progenitus deck, and a very strong Hannah, Ship's navigator.
Player C: has a very competitive Niv Mizzet, the firemind (lots of combos, three or four are infinite), and an extremely quick aggro Geist of Saint Traft
Player D: has a very sort of unpolished Kresh (but he pilots it like a pit bull)
Player E: has a very sort of unpolished Zur (but he pilots like a spider)
Will Bender Martyr's Bond (I sac a lot of stuff...it would be nice if other people did to).
Possibly Sarkhan Vol (haste and the ability to steal someone's big guy attack, and then sac it) Ink-eyes, servant of Oni (because well he does two things I want and he is a legend. 1) he reanimates/steals 2) he bounces a creature) Rune-scarred demon (Because, well it just might be one of the best creatures ever printed.)
I think you should consider the balance that you have between cards that are good on their own vs. cards that are only good in conjunction with other cards. I think there are probably a few too many cards in your deck that are only good with other cards.

I dunno about some of the changes you are recommending. Saffi Eriksdottir is possibly on the block. I thought about it. You are right Saffi is awesome in lots of decks but doesn't provide enough chemistry with all my critters. If I were to go the stax route then yeah she would be awesome but I dunno what is better, Martyr's Bond or Grave Titan. Right now I am leaning toward the Grave Titan. He has an ETB ability which I can use. He makes tokens which my deck can abuse (via Edric, skull clamp, trading post, mentor of the meek,)...he costs six which makes him fierce empath-able in addition to some other tutors and with either Kamahl or Elesh he can get down right silly.
Edric, Spymaster is just flipping amazing IMO. I hear what you are saying about cards being situational but my idea is tutor for him when his situation is good. At worst he is a low mana costing elf that deters others from attacking me in multi. At best he is an amazing, reliable card draw mechanism. I'll try him a few more times and if he is awful I'll cut him.
As for Shapesharer it does too many good things in edh! It kills generals. It can be tutored for by like everything in the deck. It copies whatever I need it to copy. It is incredibly versatile. If anything I am playing it incorrectly when it comes into play, and last but not least it is the only readily recurrable/tutorable scarecrow in the deck.:cool2: (Okay now that I think about it maybe I should cut it...)
Just stopping by to say, I have a Reaper King deck (which is more focused on scarecrows/ changelings), and Shapesharer is an amazing card. Do not take it out.
Also, maybe consider Riptide Replicator, set it to 0 counters and Scarecrow, and with your general out, you get 1/1 vindicates.

I have looked into riptide replicator. With Reaperking in play it is the cat's meow.
I have to think about it though. What does it do for me when I don't have Reaperking? I suppose it makes weenies but...really does that warrant a slot?
What would you take out to have it in?

First off thank you to those that have posted thus far on my thread! This is what I need (Advice!)
I have just cut Rite of Replication (again). It seems like it should be so good with Reaper King (it almost goes Baskin & Robins!)...but I find EDH decks that are too dependent on their generals weak (Especially 5 CMC ones). Having a card or two to combo off my general makes sense...but how good is rite?
I find in my meta most people play lightning greaves or other similar effects on all their goodies right away lest they be stolen, killed, removed/exiled, tucked, or otherwise molested. Once all the best goodies are greaved up what good is rite? I mean if I have a goody in play (such as reaper king) than it is Da Bomb (pun intended.).
Most of the time though is it just win more?:-/ What do you guys think?
Although there may be certain times when the goodies are without shroud/hexproof and you may wonder why you cut Rite of Replication. (And if those goodies happen to be Sylvan Primordial, Rune-Scarred Demon,...) But that is not to say that I disagree with what you said. I think that both sides of this discussion have credit.
What do you think about copy artifact? It is zurable in this deck and I have lots of good artifacts, but is there something any of you would run instead?
Btw, going back to Notion thief...imagine that card and Jace, TMS aim the brainstorm at an opponent, with notion thief you draw three cards and they nerf two cards from their hand to the top of their library! Or how about Nin, the Pain Artist? You kill their creature or bash face and then you draw the cards!
Copy artifact is ok. I don't think it's necessary in your deck. I know it's a pricy one but I would run Scavenging Ooze over Deathrite Shaman. But you already have a Heap Doll in the deck and I think that your deck is meant to be able to get pretty much any single card a lot of the time so I would say that only one graveyard hate card is probably enough. Maybe Crystal Shard would be good in your deck too. Notion Thief is a sweet card.
So I just played commander last night! It was awesome and I only played this deck. I noticed I had a number of issues.
1.) Getting the appropriate mana was always a problem.
2.) Ruination wrecked my game for a quite a while but I was on the comeback trail.
3.) This deck needs to be fast so I can start tutoring for scarecrows and reaperking vindicates faster.
4.) Shapesharer was a beast! It slices! It dices! Including legends, copying utility critters, and vindicating as it comes into play.
5.) Like I said before I could always use more mana. Always. So I am going to add a Mirari's Wake. I am not sure for what yet. Possibly Grave Titan...he was never the appropriate card to tutor for. Lots of times I wanted him in play but the better cards to get were my win cons like Kamahl fist of Krosa, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, or Sun Titan.

After the recent updates I would still suggest some things. First of all there have to be better options than elfhame palace. Sunpetal Grove, or even Stirring Wildwood are better cheap alternatives. I would even try to find some replacements for Jwar Isle Refuge and Graypelt Refuge. I would play Farhaven Elf over Darksteel Ingot because its more recurable and fits the deck better unless you are really looking for artifact ramp for some reason. I think that Zur the Enchanter is getting worse and worse in your deck and I would consider replacement. That is all I will say for now.
I know. I plan to add a temple garden as soon as I get one. (I got one)
As for Zur, the enchanter I think I have to change my deck again. I found last night that I did not have enough draw, or enough useful targets for the various threats.

Win-Cons: I liked the idea of Kamahl, fist of Krosa and Elesh Norn, but I added lands that produce weenies and Skull clamp so that they have resiliency with or without one another. I also feel like with all of the bouncy effects: Venser (both), Cloudstone Curio, Mistmeadow Witch, and graveyard recursion, Sylvan Primordial, Acidic Slime, Eternal Witness, mull drifter, reveillark, and spike weaver are all good.

Btw, have you looked at the synergy of Jace Beleren and Notion Thief? It is just disgusting...
I am considering cutting copy artifact. I was thinking about Garruk Wildspeaker (for the tokens and/or early ramp) or maybe Sarkhan Vol for the hasty good times.

I have considered running birthing pod in my deck due to it's ability to be played colourlessly and it's tutorific powers.
