I love the creature lock outs in the deck. Any reason for not including Pithing Needle backup and creature beats in the form of Phyrexian Revoker?
If you are switching from Zur to this deck, maybe bring along Invoke Prejudice if it was working for you. Fits your creature lock out theme, but the four blue might be a problem setting up.

My best friend and I switched decks, so he has Zur and I have Grixis. We don't take cards out of each other decks like that, we just trade/buy for more. I am going to get a copy of Invoke Prejudice and I only run Pithing Needle because of no space and Phyrexian Revoker isn't strong enough.
Pithing Needle has dual purposes and I can recur it directly with Salvaging Station. Most the time, the time of play is after Obliterate, you play it naming Sensei's Divining Top which it makes it harder for people to control their draws. They will be in top deck mode for the rest of the game until it's leaves play.
I have a huge list of cards to test to see if this plays like I want it to...Red-Sharuum + Counter magic, that's my ultimate goal.
I wonder if Goblin Welder is worthy of a deck slot again? It has won so many games recently, but I am not sure if a 1/1 creature can hold it's weight anymore. The lost of Sundering Titan and how I stopped using artifact land has made it less and less powerful.
So if you and Gals combine lists, do you make a complete stax build?
Is Night of Soul's betrayal really good in your meta, I don't really like it in my lists. Even with the one's running humility.
It delays the abundance of tokens, 1/1 utility creatures and mana birds in our meta. It does seem like a strange card, but hey, it works for us and that's all that matters in the end.
Think about it this way; you add your turns of living by quite a bit...and I like it because it makes playing my decks easier most the time.
Example scenario: If you were gaining 4 life per upkeep off Honden of Cleansing Fire and Night of Souls' Betrayal in play.
- You are being attacked by 5 2/2(They were originally 3/3's) beast tokens each turn; in actually, you receiving 10 damage/per turn instead of 15 damage per turn.
- F(x)= 40+4x-10x
- The formula changes if you don't have Night of Souls' Betrayal in play by a lot. F*(x)=40-4x-15x. Right there we see the problem already, the coefficient of the decaying rate of in the equation has already increased by 50%. Then as we progress with greater value of X's, the Y-values will create a rift between the two equation results.
- Basic algebra time! Set F(x) to 2 for each equation to figure how much life we have after 2 turns of attacking.
1st equation; F(2)= 40 + 4(2) -10(2) = 28 life
2nd equation; F*(2) = 40 + 4(2) - 15(2) = 18 life
Here we conclude with the results and find that by having Night of Souls' Betrayal in play against 5 3/3 Elephant tokens that are attacking each turn, you are spared 10 life (36%) by the 2nd turn. Who doesn't want to spare themselves 36% of their life from having a single enchantment in play?
I like the new look for Thrax. You picked some of the better utility beatsticks for reanimating, but I question if maybe one more would be solid? Just in case you either lost your GY a lot, or were in a situation where all your finishers were Path'ed/Sword'ed. I guess that would be where falling back to Thrax would be necessary though.
I'm curious about the loss of Night of Souls' Betrayal. With your finishers all being strong enough for it not to effect them, plus hosing most of your meta game, it could provide a way to get through blockers and hold off some of the aggro tokens early game. I think I like it more than Sulfuric Vortex, though Vortex can be a great enchantment.
Do you feel like this might be one of the situations where Grafdigger's Cage actually hurts you more than helps? I guess it's not a huge deal, but cutting off access to your reanimator effects seems like a loss, but then again, it probably wouldn't be on the field every game or stick that off if someone is feeling the heat from it.
Overall, great list, I am curious to see how the hybrid style plays out. Testing it is probably the best way to figure out about Grafdigger's and the amount of reanimation targets you have.
Grafdigger's Cage seems an odd choice for a deck that purports to be reanimator, since it completely hoses the idea of playing reanimator spells. I'm running it in my own Thrax deck, but the only card in my deck that it interacts with in any way is Future Sight, and even with both in play I can still play lands off the top of my deck.
Heh, sometimes I think I must somehow subconsciously mind-meld with your lists, Bacon. I switched my Lyzolda deck not long ago into a Thraximundar deck, having previously eschewed Blue. My list is still mostly staxy, but I like the reanimator motiff. I'll have to try this out. Some cards I'm curious on testing/how they play for you:
Exhume: I've played this in Lyzolda before, and almost always had to hold it for fear of Green creatures in my opponents' graveyards. Are you running it just for another 2-drop Reanimate? My sorcery-speed reanimates have pretty much gone to Reanimate/Victimize/Dance of the Dead. Maybe a Corpse Dance in a high % creature deck like Karador. I know you've probably considered it/ditched it, but Phyrexian Reclaimation while not reanimation is another option. Works with Compulsion if worst comes to worst, though 4mana+2 life just to loot is probably desperate at best. Good in response to a Bojuka Bog or what have you, though.
Mana Rocks: Vault/Crypt are no-brainers, but what about 3-drops? Coalition relic goes in any deck without Green without say, but I saw before you were running an Izzet keyrune. Did it not perform, or is Coalition Relic the only 3-drop rock worth running? I ask for Keyrunes, but also Chromatic Lantern; I know its not as good as Relic after MLD, but it does fix your mana after a wipe... maybe with so many fetches/Crucible this isn't an issue.
Collective Restrain: Does this do any better than Propaganda given all your MLD, or is it just copy 2? I run Smoke and War's Toll along side Propaganda for fort-ish effects, when I want them/playing Rx.
Grafdigger's Cage: Seems perfectly fine to me. You're going to be hard-casting plenty of creatures, and my guess is Cage's in your deck more for the "from libraries" clause than from Graveyard. Trinket-able and only relevant when you want it to be, so long as you don't goof up none.
Has Goblin Welder fallen out of favor with you? Any deck with 10+ artifacts and Red's proclivity for artifact-hate screams Welder to me. Goblin Assault's effect might be relevant, but there's usually a target for him anyways. Squee+Welder in one deck might tempt you into a Goblin package which may or may not be what the deck needs; Kiki-jiki, Tuktuk Scrapper, Goblin Matron, etc etc... is a lot of slots, maybe save it for more Rx.
Just popping in to recommend testing these four 5-drop creatures. They're great in stax reanimator because they give you more advantage the longer they're around, and they give more of an advantage than most of the alternatives.
After tinkering with different ideas, I decided to take out all the Stax-like cards expect for Braids, Cabal Minion and Smokestack. Whenever I get The Abyss; it gets a deck slot, but mostly I want to try to play a non-Stax deck for once.
Anyways, I have more deck cuts to go until I am happy with it's consistency. The last 1v1 games I played with this Grixis Reanimator/Stax variant it went way too long. I had no threats, too much land and it stalled out to Jace, the Mind Sculptor ultimate every game which never happened! I've learned my lesson, his ultimate is really hard to play correctly.
I am still looking for a Land Equilibrium, and I am seriously considering Invoke Prejudice in this list. I only have a few creatures that I want in play, so it will at least slow down players post Jokulhaups/Devastation. I need a plan B for when the game goes sour for plan A which is Reanimation!
Sword of Feast and Famine/War and Peace and/or Umezawa's Jitte might make the finalized deck list.
The new deck updates are on the original deck list! Enjoy everyone!
Smallpox vs Edict... I know edict is instant, but Smallpox has such a global effect. Maybe run them both.
Smallpox might actually make this list because it's super Innocent Blood.
I am really appreciating Looter Il-Kor more and more now; that little 1/1 shadow looter goes the distance and gets me out of bad hands a lot.
I am trying to stay away from Stax for a little while. I want to transit to different archetypes of control. I might even venture into G and make Null Rod-Aggro with Glissa, the Traitor or Jund.
I'm super intrigued to see another spin on the Thrax stax list. I have a request though - can please give me a rundown on this deck's general strategy during the early game.
In my meta when I tried to run a similar list (Gals') I couldn't make it work because obviously I didn't know how to pilot it properly.
When I rush and cast one of the global LD spells I find myself not that much ahead of my opponents in terms of remaining permanents on the table. If I wait a few turns more (to accumulate some token-generators/enchantments/Plainswalkers/etc) I find myself stomped to death due to lack of protection - blockers, removal...etc.
How do you manage your early turns? When is the right time for mass LD? How do you manage to get to that point? How do you recover after that?
What should a good kept hand consist of?
Thanks in advance, if you have the inclination to explain
It's really easy actually, get mana rocks, maybe a threat and an enchantment that benefits you in some way. Remember early card advantage is key for setting up Stax locks. Run meta cards to deal with aggro.
Early aggro is stopped by a simple Propaganda, Night of Souls'Betrayal, Aether Flash, or early Kismet effects so Frozen Aether. All you need is a little space to roam free while playing Stax. Early tokens and utility creatures really gives you a cushion.
Are you rushing spells out? If so, bad idea. Most games will take a long time, so slow roll it. Practice is the only other advice I can give you, Stax takes a while to get use to playing and playing it correctly is tough sometimes. Learn your friends decks as well, that helps in what spells to cast in what order and learn to bait countermagic.
After testing it the new changes; it works out much better, the holes are gone. I know that everyone was worried about Grafdigger's Cage and it does not stop me at all. If anything it stops early green decks more than myself from Green Sun Zenith, Chord of Calling, and Defense of the Heart(Red Castle crew).
I see a few holes in my strategy, but I know that I need to up to countermagic count by 1 or 2. Phil made a good suggestion of Rewind, Spell Crumple and/or Hinder.
I know that 2 equipment will eventually make the list; I actually have Sword of War and Peace/Feast and Famine set aside for testing.
Mystic Remora is making the cut when I get around to buying it the next time I am Portland.
Lastly, Land Equilibrium definitely makes my final list when I get my final draft up. It acts like as a control card that works well in any Stax and/or Aggro list with sufficient amount of mana rocks.
Opinions on Mutavault, Bloodgift Demon, No Mercy and Consecrated Sphinx? I want to test because I've no decks with these cards.
I find it makes for a good base to operate on in my own Staximundar deck.
By the way, I never new that card existed; Gem of Beaconing.
What do you lose from running Devastation in a Stax list?
You live off mana rocks and it does not destroy mana rocks.
I can not run Buried Alive in my playgroup; Buried Alive in my meta reads...destroy a Tormod's Crypt in play and hopefully distract your opponents from your real strategy.

Gem of Becoming means: Get one three-color set of dual/shock lands. An Armillary Sphere on steroids. ^^
I suppose it's a metagame choice, but my playgroup is very vindictive. =\
Hero of Oxid Ridge to keep Bitterblossom tokens from blocking? Trying to figure him out over Night of Souls' Betrayal. Gives you a cheap beater that pumps your own Bitterblossom tokens too. Interesting choice.

Land Equilibrium almost looks better than Smokestack for this list honestly. Since you can function off maybe a max of four mana, it could be online and slowing your opponents far faster than Smokestack. Plus, at least in your list on pg 1, you still have Braids as another stax piece.
I could see you bringing in the Demon and Sphinx for a few more reanimator targets. While I wouldn't run more than maybe 5 creatures for this purpose, do you think you currently have enough with just Jin and Sheoldred? Have you found just running those two enough?
As far as Hero of Oxid Ridge, I really like this choice. I'm sure it functions well in your meta, and I can see some applications for it in mine as well. Running over Bittleblossom tokens attempting to block would be helpful for the finishers in this deck.

A new list with Nicol Bolas as the general for Grixis Reanimation/Stax-Control. I took most of the Stax elements out of my decks, so it will look different from what you are use to Styx, Ted, and everybody else.
- I wanted to buy a Land Equilibrium, but it spiked to $50 randomly...yeah, that will have to wait for a while.
BaconoftheArk's version of Legacy Grixis EDH. Comment if you want, but use proper language and appropiate examples for your examples of why X/Y/Z card is better/worst then X/Y/Z card. If your comments are irrelevant, I will probably ignore it.
Enjoy everybody!
If you have any questions, just ask. I just play Grixis differently, so that's why my list so much different than most Grixis EDH list you've seen in person/on internet.
Could you explain some of your funkier card choices?
Simple. It's instant speed, the creature comes directly into play untapped, and it's not an enchantment. I run enough threatening permanents, I don't want Dance of the Dead to be another.
It allows me to play around Tormod's Crypt if there is only one in play.
After playing reanimator for about 5 years now, I learned that permanents that reanimte targets are worst than spells. I don't want to be 2 for 1'd anymore than I should be.

Also, I would not run the Devastation effects. How about Ashes to Ashes or heck, maybe you can run this number:
I find it makes for a good base to operate on in my own Staximundar deck.
Also, to fight off aggro, Pendrell Mists and Propaganda.

Ah. So you're not graveyard-based. That's fine.

How I know I should build a deck:
[Primer] WUB Dromar, the Banisher Stax [SOON TO BE OLORO]
A new list with Nicol Bolas as the general for Grixis Reanimation/Stax-Control. I took most of the Stax elements out of my decks, so it will look different from what you are use to Styx, Ted, and everybody else.
- I wanted to buy a Land Equilibrium, but it spiked to $50 randomly...yeah, that will have to wait for a while.

Enjoy everybody!
If you have any questions, just ask. I just play Grixis differently, so that's why my list so much different than most Grixis EDH list you've seen in person/on internet.

Could you explain some of your funkier card choices?
Mono Red's Strengths and Mono White's Strengths
Is that the only question you have for me?
Any other questions about the deck?
